The “Cap and Bussy” is crazy

The shot patterning exercise was particularly enlightening. I did not realize that one shot could simultaneously place a projectile in the target's chest and a glob of hot grease in the target's eye. Very ungentlemanly. I would like one of these now.

I think Bill's success that day can be attributed mainly to luck. Sometimes being lucky is more effective than being good.

While Hickok was known to be a very good shot I'm inclined to believe his fatal one-shot hit on Tutt was more a matter of luck than skill. I've seen a lot of GunTubers try this feat and it's nearly impossible to do on command, especially if drawing and firing within a couple seconds like Hickok did.

I also had no clue that those handguns were designed for longer ranges… kinda reminds me of rifles back when that had sights adjustable to 1,000+ meters. Awesome!

In 1999 i practiced this every Saturday for a year. I quit drinking and decided seeing if i could practice enough to make this shot was a construcive way to focuse my energy. Both can be done. I quickly learned swagged balls are your friend.

As one who has a colt navy, I can tell you that it takes time to get good with it. I was told by an old fellow that you need to go through at least a pound of powder to really get to know your gun.

FIY the grease over the bullet is there to stop the possibilty of chainfire ie the sparks from the first shot igniting ALL the chambers at the same time. It was so common a practice with cap and ball that it was not mentioned.

75 yards is something that I would honestly have a hard time hitting even with a modern precision pistol, let alone an old west revolver. It miiiiight also be that no one actually took out a tape measure to see if it was actually 75 yards and some guy just went "yeah, that's about 75 yards" and everyone went with it for the legends sake.

Having recently purchased my 51' Navy steel frame with 7.5" barrel in .44... I cannot explain to you how unbelievably impossible this shot is. It's unreal... I've put about 500 shots through mine, and I have trouble hitting 35 yards.

This gives you some idea just how proficient these men like “Wild Bill” Hickok were with firearms. The one thing you didn’t mention, was the stance, these two were in what I would call a “dueling stance” slightly turned with the gun arm forward, this makes this a really amazing shot at the distance of 75 yards. This is the only real duel in the street Hollywood style shoot out.

Why were they duelling at such a long distance? That could not have been common in the old west. I wouldn’t be able to tell for sure who I was shooting at at that range.

Wild Bill Wm "Blind" Hickok couldnt SEE at 75 yards. Historical fact.

On the square in downtown Springfield, MO, you can see the spots where each man stood.

My son can hit 3 out of 6 regularly on a 12” square steel at 160yds with his 1851 in .38spl. And the 3 misses are right there. I used to laugh at the cowboy movies making 100yd pistol shots until I saw that.

Nice shooting, sir. My absolute best with a black powder revolver, a Navy replica (old, by Armi San Marco), was one hit at third try at 50 meters can barely compare.

I doubt the distance was 75 yards. I think it was more likely 75 feet. Supposedly both men were talking to each other across the square before the gunfight began. Have you ever tried talking to someone 75 yards away? It's pretty hard to do. Now try hitting a target that far away with a hand gun. That's even harder to do.

I have a Pietta Single Action Army in 45LC and it is by far my fave pistol. Apparently according to Pietta it is a close enough copy that Colt parts will fit it. Always draws a crowd at the range and I have to bring some extra ammo cuz they ALWAYS want to shoot it. ALWAYS get a huge grin out of it and the ladies love it too.

How does the POA compare with the POI? Would WBH have had to hold over or hold under? I have seen a similar re-enactment that suggested that the shooter had to hold under. Why not put a large card behind the target to see the actual POI?

How big was the gong? Depending on the size, 75 yards is a pretty respectable shot even with a modern defensive pistol... with iron sights. Slide mounted red dots are another story.

Hey I’m curious, try making the Billy Dixon shot. This is a 1,538 yard shot with a Sharps rifle (iron aperture sight) in .50-90 black powder? I’ve never heard of anyone attempting it. I believe it is arguably harder than the 2.2 mile shot with a scope and modern smokeless cartridge. It’s a round nose bullet maybe going 1,450 FPS at absolute maximum. Then consider it’s a round nose…

Extremely enjoyable. 75 yds (or 68 mtrs as they insist on saying nowadays here in the UK) is a long, long way to make a revolver shot. It is actually just under the length of my back yard, at which distance I can just recognise my cats.

5:45 It's fairer to say that these are in fact 1860 Army revolvers, but fitted with the older style barrels from the 1851. The cylinder is longer than you find in a .36 caliber gun and is identical to the 1860 Army's cylinder. The forcing cone is shortened on that 1851-style barrel as a result, meaning it is impossible for you to fit that .44 caliber barrel onto an actual .36 Navy because there is too much of a gap between barrel and cylinder.

I read the Colt .36 was factory zeroed at 75 yds. I don’t know if it’s true.

I am part Cherokee(Eastern) and was wondering if you have a tribal affiliation ? I worked at the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian, Washington, DC from 2000 - 2004.

Also, it is interesting that you load all six cylinders on that Colt. Many people do not consider the shallow slot for resting the hammer between percussion caps a good enough safety feature, and prefer to load only 5. But I have been loading all six for 15 years now and never had anything close to a mishap,

Man when I first started shooting pistols I couldn't hit a can 5 feet away I've hit a plate at 50 yards and even that was pretty difficult good shooting wish there was more cap and ball revolver stuff to watch maybe do some paper cartridge reloads

You should have adjusted your firing point and target location to put the target against that dirt bank in the background. That way you could have observed your misses and learned the ballistics involved. You were just throwing lead downrange in a (very) slow version of spray and pray. 😁

A more preferable control item would be a Target style revolver chambered in .38 special imo.

The Colt 1851 Navy would have been the better choice at 75 yards, mine, with a ball and 20gr blackpowder load tends to shoot high at 15 yards, and (sort of) on target at 75 yards. But my 1858 Remington new army with a ball and 25gr blackpowder tends to consistently shoot about 40 inches low at 75 yards.

I bet if you had more time shooting at that distance, you would be able to hit it more often. I'll be honest and say I don't practice that far with handguns. Wild Bill was a crack shot and I'm willing to bet he carried a Colt Navy in the Civil War, knowing how effective his pistol(s) was

Hickock didn't use a Colt Navy. That day he had a 44 Colt Dragoon. Also, original Colts were more acurate than todays repros because the rifling was slower. And, was it really 75 yards?

Man I don’t get why anyone would buy an 1851 in .44??? The whole advantage of an 1860 is it’s a 1851 frame with a .44 cylinder. So instead of having a small frame for the gun you have instead made the frame bigger to make the proportions correct for an 1851. So you have a sized up 1851??? Why when you could go lighter handier and better in every way with a more common 1860??? The fact it’s not historically accurate is just the icing!!! I think I’d love a colt pocket navey!!! The best reproduction pocket gun I’ve seen. I understand some guns like the Lemat that came in .42 caliber with 18 gauge shotgun, it makes sense to turn it to the common .44 and 20 gauge (they actually made 20 gauge American models but French were usually 16-18). However an 1851 .44 is just a WTF situation!!!

I think that Wild Bill was closer than 75 yds. Don't most legends become exaggerations? Same with Bass Reeves' 500 yard Winchester shot in the Arbuckle Mtns of Oklahoma killing a desperado.

My 1851 shoots a foot high at 10 yds.! Should be close at 75...though I've never tried it!

You didn't controll your breath...the gun was waving all over the place..breathe out, aim, squeeze....easy shot with that gun if you've practiced a lot. Wild Bill had practiced a lot....good at 100 yards if you know what you're doing...

No you would not have survived a duel with Wild Bill. Wild bill had experience facing another man with a gun and not shitting his pants. Shooting paper plates at the range does not prepare someone to face a man that's shooting back. In a real modern gunfight someone great at the range may fire 15 rounds from 15 feet and hit nothing. When someone is facing another man that's also shooting, it's a whole different story. Wild Bill had balls and wasn't afraid to die.

You are a crummy shot

Yeah... I could have taken out with a sling- shot.. That longer barrel needs to be very clean.. The consistancy of the lead, diffrent today.. = super clean bore..soft lead to hook up with bore better.. The greese, hold the spark back..in the older revolver.. It tends to grime up the barrel .. My choice for that distance.. .357 wetren marshall.. Back in those days, we had nothing but time, to make these longer shots possable.. and finding what made this easy... = spin that projectile..😮...
