Because cloud gaming feels way worse. It would just be a stopgap so people keep buying games until they can get a Switch 2. It also makes the new device more attractive to big publishers due to the big install base.
It's not going to be a streaming service just based on the 2.2 GB filesize. Most game streaming apps are 100 MB or less on Switch. And with Nintendo's dedication to optimizing their games to reduce their filesizes...there's no way theirs would be 10x as large somehow
It must’ve been beyond tight to get in. I got in at least a second or two after the application opened up, clicked the check on the box to click confirm, and then… it wouldn’t go through. I kept clicking on the submit application button, but it wouldn’t register, so I refreshed the page, and it was already full. This was probably within 10-15 seconds. It was absolutely wild, lol. Congrats to anyone who made it in, though! Also, my theory as to what this play-test is for could be something that allows people to play with friends in co-op games that only work locally. Basically an extension of the retro games for Switch Online, but instead of just being tied to those apps, you can connect directly to a friend’s Switch from anywhere. Kind of like Parsec, but built in to the Switch.
I woke up 10 minutes before it opened, and within the not even 20 seconds it took me to sign in again (cause for some reason it signed me out), it was full. Very annoyed
It’s definitely Miiverse. They want to do a playtest with specifically US. If it was GameCube or a gaming streaming service, they could’ve just tested with employees. No, they wanted to do it with US. Why? They want to see if we’re ready and mature enough to talk with each other on Miiverse. It could also be linked to the new button on Switch 2.
Hear me out, Its actual servers for NSO. They have never done a playtest for a NSO App, so it has to be internal, and with the switch sucsessor on the way obviously they want to update the internet. And with the way Nintendo handles online, its simply not possible. So if you are testing new servers you would like more people to test your product from all around a world, aka requiring a test. I know this is far fecthed let me have this :p
I camped out on my phone to apply for it and as soon as I was able to try to sign in all the spots got filled up within seconds. dude, everyone was like foaming at the mouth counting at the opportunity. A 2.2 GB file size app is pretty meaty for switch standards
The reason why the eShop is so slow is because it runs on Switch's ancient built-in internet Browser, which was super outdated even when Switch's development started.
7:30 About that, one thing it didnt occured to me thar GameCube and Wii games could be perfect to kickstart a streaming service is that they output at a 480p resolution. Compared to streaming an HD movie on Netflix, bandwidth shouldn't be a problem.
Of course Nintendo wants testers to have a consistent connection. It would be a bigger headache for Nintendo if testers didn't and gave bad feedback. To extrapolate that it means video streaming is coming is nonsense.
I really hope it's the second option with the option to buy a switch pro with physical media. That can definitely make the switch the best-selling consol of all time.
I agree that the most likely thing they are testing is game streaming. Can't think of much else that wpuld require a test of tons of people from various regions than something itnernet intensive like this
I think this service is going to mimick a TV broadcast, having a schedule of games you can play at no additional cost. Splatoon 3, Breath of the Wild, maybe some featured indies and third parties one hour at a time. They'd broadcast exclusive demos, Splatoon live events... It would be like an interactive TV channel, with Arcade Bunny as the host. Amazon Gaming has shown interest in Switch 2, maybe we'll be seeing a more mature service powered by Amazon. Microsoft would NOT be happy with this.
I wonder if it is GameCube support. I mean think about this, the Switch got a firmware update and I've been hearing reports on the GameCube controller adapters not working right and yesterday Nintendo announces this. Highly coincidental don't you think. Now I could be 100% wrong and it's something else but I'm starting to think otherwise.
I appreciate the creativity but this just sounds like the 100% sure fire way to kill the Switch 2 before it even releases. Like this is the absolute furthest possible thing from what they would think of doing. No, Switch owners are not going to also be Switch 2 owners without buying one. They will not be able to play any Switch 2 games nor use any Switch 2 features without buying a Switch 2. This doesn’t hold up to even a millisecond of scrutiny. If Nintendo wants to sell the Switch 2, it MUST be fully exclusive. Zero crossover besides backwards compatibility.
I believe that Switch 2's reveal would happen 2 weeks after Brothership comes out the same way Switch 1 was revealed 2 weeks after Color Splash came out.
The fact this is expansion pass exclusive too, if it is a streaming upgrade to switch 2 when using a switch 1, they could be selling "switch 2 streaming" as a paid service upgrade, which would be in line with the awful subscription model so many tech companies are doing at the moment.
Online backwards compatibility sounds interesting…but it would need to be seamless. I don’t think Nintendo is bold enough to go in that direction given their reluctance to adopt basic online features Also: Andre you’re killing it
I feel like the only way the “Switch 2 Games on Switch 1” idea could work (in a business sense), is if it was an entirely separate and more expensive subscription. Cause my only issue with this is for the business side, why would they waste time and resources to make a new console, and then say “Oh you can just play these games on your old console, no need to Switch 2 the new one”? I do agree with how this would be a pretty good idea for consumers, but it just doesn’t make sense to me on how Nintendo are actually gonna make money on the new console, if everyone just uses the subscription.
I saw this coming! Nintendo and Google are cooking up something similar to what Google Stadia offered. But with the power of Nintendo and their software they have. It’s going to be huge if this happens!
Wow they really left Australians in the dust on this one, no Aus people allowed to participate and even if you did have a jp or us acc it opened at 1am Aus time. That’s honestly really funny.
I think GameCube games. Remember the whole game / disc doesn’t load into memory, it streams or gets packets from the disc as needed thus want a stable connection so not “jittery”. Maybe an alternative to play from server vs downloading the full 1.5 gb GameCube image to possible limited storage. The file size may be emulation plus streaming/ compression logistics for the service.
In the case of GameCube games, it should also be noted that some games were spread across multiple discs, so depending on the game depending on how these images are handled, we could be looking at downloads as high as 3 gigabytes.
If the GameCube streaming service is real that’s so sad. The Wii SO many years ago could emulate up to N64 no issues and the switch 2 generations later STILL can’t go past that without streaming…
I doubt it will be something too massive because the people who managed to get in will leak everything as soon as it starts, Nintendo wouldn't waste the hype of the announcement like this
I don't think it has anything to do with GC streaming. Companies are able to stream modern AAA games on PS+ & Gane Pass, so Nintendo could easily stream 1.5 GB GameCube games
Interesting ideas. It would be “The Power of the Cloud” but maybe done better. Especially since Nintendo makes the most of their money back on software. However, I’m not expecting anything ground breaking. Something somewhat cool, nonetheless. We’ll see.
GameCube streaming is the most likely. If it only takes like 5gigs to do it, that’s better than 2gigs per title over 20 titles. No idea what crazy idea that second one was
I said this when Switch was on its 5th year support that what if Nin used the streaming side to do the next gen games upgrades so they wouldn't need a new system. Then when it comes to the cartridge side they would be the upgraded chips like expansion pack to help the OG run better for the next gen games on them. But wishful thinking so we will just have to continue to wait for that day to come to see what the next system is.
The possibility that this could be for streaming Gamecube and up games in NSO; just reminds me of the waste that is the NSO, subscription; compared to just buying the games (as they were or remastered) and permanently tying them to my eshop account and just guarantee that we keep em and they are foward compatible for every gen moving foward. Much better if they just let us stream games (Switch 1 and 2 in future) that we dont own and play on secondary Switches or even a mobile app, via subscription. Thag way we have a more robust rental service and the option to play games we own on Switch 2 on a smaller mote pocket friendly device, for rhe days you want to leave your expensive Switch 2 at home (depending on what neighborhood you be visiting). It also would be giving us all the options. For those who love renting games forever; keep your Switch 1, but for those who want to own their games and play em without the very real limitations of online aleays connectiontivity; the Switch 2 is for them.
I got lucky and made sure I had already signed into My Nintendo in another tab and skipped the sign in during registration so I was able to get selected.
In my opinion the Gamecube games can't work entirely because some minigames of Mario Party 6-7 need an mic accessory and the Switch hasn't a mic incorporated, or some games are removed or Nintendo will have in the warehouse a new device that fixes this, boh who knows
Before the Switch 2 NSO 2.0 I hope to see DK 64 & Diddy Kong Racing 64 and old Pokémon games for NSO and for the Switch 2 Online Nintendo Gamecube, Wii, DS and 3DS defienitily Gamecube for NSO! Would it really happen before even the Switch 2? That would be so AWESOME Nintendo playtest it good thank you and Wake up Link!
If this is anything related to streaming, it will most likely not be available in my country. If that's the case I hope this is just some small feature.
I managed to get into the playtest! I love the streaming Switch 2 games idea, but I feel like they wouldn't do that. They might feel that idea would strip sales away from Switch 2, which is something a game company with a new console does not want. Also cloud gaming has been pretty bad on Switch so far and with its bad reputation, I feel like announcing that could be disappointing to some people.
