*Regarding* the Bridge Officers test: We could assume Mr Worf has taken it, but as it's not "officially" stated anywhere, we chose to present it just for a counter argument :) Given Worf had been a Bridge Officer, it would make perfect sense for him to have supposedly taken the test at some point. Sorry to confused anyone!
@BenjaminRoethig
@BenjaminRoethig 5 лет назад
My understanding of the Bridge Officer's test is that it's specifically for officers outside of the regular command track, for example, medical division officers.

even in the real life military reprimands aren't permanent blocks to advancement and only ruin careers that are near their end (mandatory retirement). klingons live a long time, even a 40 year old klingon can look forward to around a century of active service in the future. yes, the reprimands do remain on the permanent record, but if they blocked advancement permanently the person reprimanded would move on and you would flush all that training money down the drain. so no, the reprimands he has gotten are immaterial. they might block some medals and honors, but ultimately if he shows the ability to do the job, he will get the promotion. EDIT: to put it more bluntly, if they want to end someone's career they have ways of doing that, either through honorable discharge, or worse, dishonorable discharge. reprimands are speed bumps, not blocks.

He probably took the test either at or immediately after his time at the Academy. Geordi too. Remember in season one they both wore command red and Worf in particular just hung around the back of the bridge as a go to for any station if if became vacant. That to me indicates that he was trained to have a full grasp of starship operations.

Perhaps, today is a good day to die." Comms, "Sir, Starfleet thought ahead of this and has not given us an armed ship." Captain Worf, "Prepare for ramming speed!"

The dominion war lost a lot of good experience officers. The federation may excuse some of these violations to keep the Fleet up. Worf may not be captain during the golden age, but post war he might.
@benjaminbierley2074
@benjaminbierley2074 10 месяцев назад
I can see Sisko's words after the failure of that covert op coming from the rationale leftover from the golden age. Starfleet still in the midst of the war, they hadn't "fully" processed the depth of the casualties they suffered, and so by the "old" standards, Worf would have just torpedoed his career (same with the previous reprimand of killing Duras). Though I will say the covert op was a bad setup on Starfleet's part...honestly, pairing him with his S.O., and you didn't think that might lead to a bias in judgment if things went south? Starfleet for sure re-evaluated their officers after the war once reality sunk in. Nevermind their officer corp especially the younger ones now carried the shadow of the war going forward.

I think you’re misunderstanding the significance of the bridge officer’s test. Worf was already a bridge officer, so he presumably passed that or an equivalent test years ago. Troi had to pass it to advance in rank because she was never a bridge officer even though she held the rank of lieutenant commander. It wasn’t a requirement of her job until she decided to take on that responsibility. I would assume that as chief security/tactical officer it would have been required of Worf. In other words, I think that the test has more to do with your job than your rank.

Sisko should've been the one to be reprimanded. He knowingly put two people with a strong emotional attachment to each other into an impossible situation on a critical and dangerous mission. That the goal of said mission might be jeopardised was only to be expected should something go wrong, as it did in that episode. One might argue that the whole mess was Sisko's fault. @@SantomPh That is true. Worf knew that he was not the man to lead the Empire. He had no political or military power in the Empire. @richardlahan7068
@richardlahan7068 5 лет назад
There is the question of Worf's judgment. When he fired on and destroyed a Klingon transport ship full of "civilians" that was decloaking right in front of the Defiant during a battle with the Klingons. Even though there were no actual civilians on the ship and it was a setup to make the Federation look bad, Captain Sisko told Worf that it showed extremely poor judgment for a Starfleet officer (shooting first and asking questions later) and that this incident would most likely result in his never being offered an independent command. Things like that go on your service record and don't get forgotten.

Bridge Officer (or Officer of the Deck) is an important job but not that big of a deal in getting promoted. It only means your in charge of the bridge during one of the daily watches and (going by my Coast Guard experience) was usually held by junior officers. On my ship, the chief boatswain mate and chief quartermaster were bridge officer qualified. The Captain and first officer and department heads were also bridge officer qualified but typically didn't stand watch. Also in "Data's Day" Worf is seen standing Bridge Officer watch.

I forget when he says this or why he says it, i think its because someone is surprised that he drinks prune juice. He says, "this is a warriors drink." And there's something pure behind the seriousness when he says that, like while he was raised by human parents his human father told him that because it was probably one of the few things he liked about human food when he was young. They bonded over that, so when he says, "this is a warriors drink." He is paying homage to wisdom passed down by his father, which is a great honor in Klingon Culture. Almost makes me shed a tear.

Technically speaking, Worf *was* a Captain when he was in command of the Defiant during several of her sorties in the Dominion War and when engaging the Borg in the Battle of Sector 001. As per Starfleet tradition, any officer in command of a starship is to be addressed as "Captain" regardless of their actual rank. I believe the "Countdown" comics you mentioned also showed Worf as a General in the Klingon Defense Force, leading a group of Klingon vessels in an ill-fated attempt to hunt down the rogue Romulan ship Nerada.

But in those cases, its a position title not their Starfleet rank. Though we have seen instances where other ship commanding officers (captains) also did not hold the rank of Captain. Sisko himself for one. He was a Lt Commander when he was in command of his ship at Wolf 359.

Makes more sense if he is never allowed to be captain. Ambassadorship lets him leap frog the rank and commander allows him to do 90% of the functions but ultimately Starfleet has to have some measure of constency and regulations and after the times he let his Klingon nature get the better of him he should not by all rights be viewed as fit to command a ship of his own without oversight.

@mb2000 5 лет назад
The reprimand for killing Duras might explain why he was the only one of the Enterprise-D senior staff to remain a Lieutenant when everyone else (even Troi!) were Lt. Commander or higher by then until Generations. In The Way Of The Warrior, when Sisko gets Worf to stay on DS9, why does he put so much emphasis on “an opening for a LIEUTENANT Commander”? Worf was already a Lt. Commander, so all he really got a was division transfer and a new role, not a promotion. I would assume that with the Bridge Officer Test, he either took that test before or during early TNG when he was in the command division. Or just by being in the red uniform, his basic training included that stuff without it being a specific test. I think someone like Troi would need the test as she would never be called to command due to her normal role having nothing to do with ship operations. Same for Jadzia Dax; maybe that’s why she was promoted between DS9 Season 3 and 4, so she could have a go with the Defiant!
@SantomPh
@SantomPh 5 лет назад
while Worf was originally transferred to DS9 to liaise with the Klingons, he was granted the position of strategic advisor for the sector which granted him a promotion to Commander. When Sisko is talking to him about his near-miss with a Klingon civilian transport and "wait till you get four pips on the collar" you can see that Worf has 3 pips, making him a commander

@ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681
None of this matters. What matters is that Worf is a Starfleet officer, he is loyal to the Federation, he is capable, and he is a klingon. For diplomatic reasons Starfleet admirals will make him a captain, perhaps even an admiral. Admirals have to think about practicalities, not just rules. Worf is simply too useful facilitating Federation/Klingon cooperation. He may be more of a puppet than a full captain, if he does real bad, but he is still too useful, even if he has to be kept in a short leash. But then again, there is such thing as deniability. Would he go native, he would not be officially representing Federation, and would he succeed, he could get the glory while admirals get results. Its almost a win-win.

Worf as a captain would be stressful for the crew of whatever vessels he might command. Still, I wonder what genius would send a commander with his history on a mission with his wife.

Another great video. Thanks. I love the balancing of canon and non-canon information. After watching this video, I wondered if it would be cool to situate Worf's reprimand in comparison to others in the Trek universe. Ben Finney comes readily to mind. Perhaps there are others (besides Kirk's demotion from Admiral, of course), though I can't think of them right now.

Btw, it might be worth exploring ethnocentric attitudes in the promotion to Captain. Spock confronted the issue in TOS "Enterprise Incident" and Data as well when given temporary command of the USS Sutherland in TNG "Redemption II". Worf is the first and, to our knowledge, only Klingon in Star Fleet (out of canon, that honor goes to Konom in the 1980s DC comics, though Worf may be the first "official" Klingon in Star Fleet). Worf would have faced discrimination throughout his career and, if so, the two reprimands (especially the first) on his record would have been read (by some I would think) along the lines of "Klingons are too volatile to command a ship beyond a combat scenario" (cf. in Redemption II the argument from analogy against Data: "no one would suggest that a Klingon would be a good ship's counselor"; such racism certainly existed among the human members who seem to dominate Star Fleet command structure). I'm not sure if other examples beyond Spock and Worf could be found, but might make for a fascinating study.

klingons live allot longer than humans, and also cultural/species considerations must be made. reprimands aren't permanent even in our real world armed forces (well, in most first world ones) and to limit his career for potentially 100 years would be kinda insane, it would be like the classic saying of "cutting off your nose to spite your face". if a reprimand ends potential for advancement, people will just take their first chance at honorable discharge. that would be an extremely expensive mistake for the military (training isn't cheap). so no, reprimands would not ultimately rule out his advancement of his career, they only ruin careers that are near their end (in the modern world inside 10 or so years of mandatory retirement). klingons live A LONG TIME and even a 40 year old klingon could expect another century of active service.

Probably not as there is very few characters which jump from one series to another. And Worf was already in TNG and DS9. We did not see Kirk as the commander of Federation, nor admiral Picard. More likely Worf will have a small role as an abassador of Klingon Empire to the Federation if even that.

I can't recall who sent Worf & Dax on the mission where Dax was injured, but I blame that on the idiotic commanding officer who put him in that position by sending a married couple on a mission together alone (Presumably Captain "Fuck the PD, I'm a religious icon" Sisko, slayer of Senators, poisoner of worlds). That said, I don't want to see Worf in the new look Klingon makeup. I'd rather they just not feature him than turn him into one of those abominations.

Funny, I was just thinking that Worf would make a good diplomatic ambassador to the Klingon Empire and totally forgot that he became one at the end of DS9. As for Caption, I don't know if I could see him as a Federation ship captain although he is surely capable, I see him as more likely to sit on the high council of the Klingon Empire, possibly even becoming Emperor or be in command of a Klingon ship or being a general or something like that. And, yeah at the end of Nemesis with Riker leaving as captain, it would come down to two people probably, Data and Worf to step in but (spoiler alert if you haven't seen it:) with Data dead Worf would be the logical choice. I mean Geordi could probably too, but Worf was already in the place in his career where stepping up to second in command would make more sense.
@Krahazik
@Krahazik 5 лет назад
Considering I think one requirement for a good ambassador is an understanding of the culture your dealing with and to some degree, adhering to that culture when dealing with them, or on their planet. In both cases where Warf got a reprimand, he did maintain cultural adherence and thus avoid a more serious and potentially diplomatic incident. If he had done what he did without adhering to Klingon law and tradition, there would have been major consequences and Worf would probably have been looking at jail time and loss of rank, if he was lucky.

Do people overlook when Worf was captian of the Defiant in (the) First Contact movie? Does that count?
@ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681
I believe you might be confusing captain and commanding a vessel. A commander may captain a vessel if its small enough while a captain would work as a first officer for an admiral commanding a fleet. Some navies have ranks that are about the same as commander, but may be called a frigate-captain, or junior captain, who can command a lighter vessel but has no seniority for the bigger ships. Simply, you cannot give one captain a huge ship and another a small ship, without it looking like a punishment, and younger officers are better off with something that is not the most expensive thing in a fleet. Lastly, its not just commanding a ship, its about commanding people. A crew of 1000 needs more officers than a crew of 10. This is where junior officers are needed. Being responsible for 500 men on a battleship can be a greater duty than being responsible for 5 on a large shuttle. So what you see may not be descriptive of the full spectrum of rank powers and responsibilities.

Well, in the novels set after Nemesia, he resigns as a diplomat, that life being ‘not for him’, and becomes Picard’ first officer. replacing Riker ( who goes to command the Titan).:So it’s highly possible he could become a captain.

i think the way DS9 closed in the final episode was a disgrace. everyone was cast into the winds and there wasnt even a goodbye. Worf simply packed his stuff, and walked out of the scene into an air lock. i felt like there was no closing. Worf could have been an acting ambassador, but likely was more of a federation/klingon military go between. making a stronger alliance and would aid in gathering extra muscle when the klingons or federation may have needed it.

The mission Worf went on with Jadzia was a mistake. No serious organization would put someone in that position. It's hard enough to not let personal feelings get in the way in normal circumstances. Sending a husband and wife on a mission like that is just not smart. I feel that mission was more for TV ratings than anything else. Sending Worf with anyone else and the outcome would have been different. As far as Worf being Captain Star trek has many other continuity errors so overlooking some reprimands wouldn't be out of the norm.
