It makes me angry how private landlords etc check properties every 6 months to ensure it is all hunky dory, but council properties go for years without a peek behind the door. I’m not saying that it is councils fault, but the system is easy to exploit
Less than that in some properties. I moved into a house last September and had my first inspection not quite 4 months after I moved in. You can't trust No-one it seems!
if it makes You feel any better, those inspections by Landlords don't do much because there's an easy way around them-I used to rent a room from a couple that sublet to Me, and sublet another room to a couple, when they had their Landlord come in to do inspection, they told both Me and that couple to go for a walk and that they would call or text to let Me and them know when He was gone. regards.

No housing inspections like you'd have either, twice a year or, 3 times a year. I'm in a private rental and they inspect it every 4 months.... As far as I know. I only moved in September last year.
There should be quarterly property inspections of the property. Proper tenancy should be proven and physical inspection for damage... unannounced inspections can catch a lot of these crimes in a short time.
the amount of money they are loosing in subletting; they could hire auditors to check yearly (as they do in private rentals!!!! I've lived in my apartment for 10 years, and they still conduct a yearly check) that you are legally allowed to occupy said premises. Why has no one thought of this? They say they are short on housing stock, they could probably get legitimate in need families and individuals housed more kicking illegal renters out
The British system coddles these benefits leeches/criminals with a slap on the wrist, or the court systems favavorite, a suspended sentence! They do it because they get away with it!

I live in one in Belgium , they check every year once by law, most things we need to ask permission for even to put a bush or gate, even for painting the walls are rules for like no flashy colors and I happily agreed with the rules because after me others also need to live here after all, gardens they have the right to look at 24/7 and if your garden is messy they ofcource want to check inside too, I have a 2 year old so my garden is sometimes full with toys and strangely they like that kind off mess, she also loves drawing with chalk outside and the assistant from social housing joint her a few times when she passed the garden, as long you respect them and thier rules they are amazing ppl
Here in aus they do 4 per year I'm fairly sure. I know I have some friends in social housing and they are checked quite regularly. It just seems like the officials are overwhelmed over there and just plain lazy.
It would cost a huge amount. I calculated in response to someone else's video comment that yearly walk-throughs of all social housing in the UK would cost about £100milliom / year.
cant understand how people can avoid detection for so long - my local council come to visit my social housing home every couple of years to photograph bank statements and ID. You cant get out of it and I think it would be very hard to pull the wool over their eyes.

Instead of calling the concil tenants a day before to check them on they should do sudden visits ! Then they will see many people does it Especially in London Southwark !
In the 80s I lived in West Finchley, London. Anyway one of the women who was renting one of the rooms in the house I was living at was struggling to afford the rent. She was a nurse at the Royal Free Hospital. I could afford it okay (and so could the other tenant) as we worked on the London Underground. Anyway one day she announced she was moving out and getting a flat of her own near the hospital. I asked how she could afford a flat, especially as she told me it had a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living room. She told me it was a council flat and the tenant was moving in with his girlfriend. His girlfriend also had a one bed council flat. Neither were working, both were claiming housing benefit but the nurse was paying him monthly rent. The tenants were apparently bragging how they now had an extra few hundred pounds to spend every month. I remember wanting to report them but I was only 20 at the time, but I didn't because I wasn't sure how to go about it and I was scared of repercussions.

At 20 your tend to believe system is meritocracy if anything it is facist dictatorship. It's not good to be grass. In the NHS you get labelled a whistle-blower nd sacked. I live in a council flat. People would tell me that I would be very lucky to get one. I know intellectually that I am lucky to have a roof over my head. There are people sleeping on the streets; I often see them in Putney's city center and other places around London. But it has been stressful. The place was in horrible condition when I moved in, and it's not much better now because there is only so much you can do with an old crumbling place and limited funds. I feel embarrassed to let people in. I had no choice but to accept it. It was either say yes or be out on the street while dealing with a chronic illness an other issues. I do not feel lucky. I do feel cursed and trapped. I hope it is not too late for me to one day have a true home.

Why council takes 9 years to catch these crooks. They should visit these properties monthly. If Council is too busy, they should contract out these inspections. Council should establish a reward system, so people can call in and report these crooks. These crooks should not only be arrested, they should pay all the money that they have stolen from the tax payers.

It seems that it would be financially feasible for the council to hire some extra inspectors to do monthly or quarterly physical inspections of the properties to catch things like unlawful sublets in a more timely manner.... 9 years?? Really? How many inspectors could the bennies paid out over that 9 years could have paid for?
@@djfhfh They would have to get themselves down to the council offices to seek out alternative or emergency acomodation. You see it on the high court documentaries most of the time. Sometimes though, you might not be rehomed in the same county, let alone the same borough. Its very catch 22.
It is not all in the ghetto. Some of the housing is nice and a lot of it is in way better condition than some council housing in England. I know because I've visited and seen some section eight places in the US and now live in a horrible council place in London. Even people working for the council have remarked on the condition of the flat, that's how bad it is.
these things are crazy to me - i was in housing in america when in need -- second i no longer needed it i was so happy to move out it was family ready second i walked out the door -- some peoples abuse of systems world wide is sad -- i did see while in housing people abuse system here i just hope people can NEVER get any form of assistance there after once caught

I think it also shows what a lot of scammers there are out there as well! The council doesnt have capacity to carry out such regular checks as are suggested here unfortunately. The real problem isnt the council - its all the people trying to get something for nothing.
They need housing anyway and it's mostly family, i hate it when people buy council housing with discount and privately rent them for a massive profit, even slum properties that are bearly safe to stay in.
This situation exists because of developers, private landlords and the government. Private renting in the UK is so damn expensive most people can barely afford it. The place I lived at previously was so expensive it took my entire monthly wage. I had no choice but to get a friend to move in or I would have been homeless or starving to death. Landlords are basically greedy pigs who couldn't care less so long as they get their money. Developers by law have to provide a certain percentage of the devlopment as affordable housing. However, they avoid this in some cases by doing smaller developments so they dont have to provide any. Then there are people who cant afford to rent privately because of the aforementioned expense, but they also earn too much to be entitled to low cost/council properties. So they often have no choice but to rent from a slum lord who is illegally sub letting. The government are they most responsible of all. We are 10 years behind when it comes to building then the stupid idea of letting people buying their council houses leading to even greater shortages because houses are not being built at the same rate they are sold off. The whole housing system is broken in the UK.
It's almost as if people will need to study harder, work harder and pay more taxes into country rather than grabbing it wherever they can. Terrible! Can you imagine?
What if they worked 2-3 jobs for 10 years straight, didn't go on holidays, splash out on gadgets and nice cars and worked their back off, to buy a second home to let out. Then you have mugs with 5 kids, can't even hold down a job.
In germany you cannot. Not without a good reason, and even then, if people Don t move out, it takes time to get a court order for eviction... Often takes up to a year

I don't understand why the general public is not getting more upset by this kind of thing. It is YOUR tax money paying for housing that people aren't using for the purposes intended and are actually profiting from it in many cases. At a very minimum these people need checked up on and evaluated on a yearly basis to show continuing need for social housing.
I well remember Charlie Bronson in the 1970s who managed BRITISH LEYLAND in the Bromley district ; “ I wouldn’t be talking to you if I didn’t think you had the bread ! “ He was an arrogant man but efficiently ran the business with two employees and only serviced your vehicle if it was purchased from him. Charlie drove a Rolls Royce and lived in a Council House. It was alleged that he owned other properties which he let out. Those days were the days of Great Britain which has sad😅ly now long gone.
The councils need to take better care of the taxpayers money. They should be doing regular checks. The couple that moved to Greece should be legally liable for paying back any housing benefits they received l. The the nephew should be investigated by the the Inland Revenue to find out if he was declaring the rent he was receiving. Anyone found abusing social housing, should be stripped of any form of benefit payments. The UK is way too soft and makes it too easy for people to take advantage of working taxpayers.

In 1999, I was a single working person in my 20s. I applied for social housing. I waited 8 months until I was offered a 1 bedroom flat, which I accepted. The year is 2024 now, and I'm told things have changed so much in Britain that ppls can't even apply for social housing because there are too many people living in Britain and not enough social housing to go around. What happened? I feel so sorry for ppls who have no hope of ever having the opportunity to be offered affordable social housing in Britain. I thank God every day & feel blessed to have the roof over my head. I pray that things will change for the better and go back to the way things were for British homeless people. A time when everyone was told they were able to apply for affordable social housing.

L can remember the end of the 1990s everyone got a home if thay was not born in the UK. People lived in mansion-house and the government pays all the bills. People move out of there flat to have them rebuilt. And what happened the flats was giving to people who come to the UK. Out the back of a lorry into a three bedroom house or flat. The council are something else. Seemingly if people are already in a home and are eligible for housing benefit then they are in need of a home. Because the daughter is illegally occupying a home and is not the tenant - she is jumping the housing queue where people have sometimes waited years for an affordable home and who re genuinely in need. Council tennants cannot legally pass on their tennancy to their children or others because they dont own the property in the first place!

If you're a single male in the U.K the average waiting time to be housed is 43 years. Thats why 2 3rds of the homeless population is male. Women, especially those with children get put straight to the front of the que. Apparently men don't need a home.
Its illegal to profit from something that isnt theirs in the first place. GENUINE need is NOT for people just looking for a home to live in its for those who cannot afford to rent privately. In New York they have what's called 72hr eviction meaning if the tenant has not moved within that time the city marshals are allowed to remove all of the tenants items onto the sidewalk and change the locks and theirs nothing the tenant can do once this action has begun.
All council properties in posh areas should be sold to the private market for high prices and the money raised used for building two to four times the nuber of unis in less expensive areas. This is very poor management. Sloppy weak and lazy.
There should be very steep penalties for fraudulent use of public aid and social services/networks and benefits meant for those who truly need it. And the public assistance programs should be geared to have requirements in which apply to able bodied people that can work, to get a job and move on from needing assistance. This can only happen if it’s a temporary assistance process in which after a couple months, the assistance is stopped. If an able bodied person doesn’t want to get a job, they make a decision to be in a homeless situation. If and able bodied person doesn’t get a job within a couple months, they are choosing to not be employed. The social benefits system is set up in such a manner that it encourages con artists and lazy bones to take advantage and use the system in such a way that robs those who truly need assistance, especially those that are not able bodied and have no ability to support themselves in the future.
Why are the tenants that are illegally subletting their council property made to pay the council ALL the money they collected from their illegal sublet? By them not being ordered to pay the council/taxpayers restitution for the theft they've committed, it only encourages others to do the same knowing that if they're caught nothing bad will happen.
What I don’t understand is why do the counsel not make them get a job? After six months they need to get a job or they have to vacate the premises. And every year they need to verify who lives in these homes !
The stupid thing is that anyone is eligible to register for a council tenancy, exlude the moneymakers subletting for huge profit and most of the people so far (about a third through?) were living under someone elses tenancy, exactly as if they'd sat on the list until they got a property. They're guilty of jumpling the queue and no more, and yet they make out that it's like a holy quest to right great wrongs - the only wrongs are that there are not enough properties being built and therefore people are queue jumping - what a load of fuss about sweet FA! Note, at the end of each there's this bollox of 'now a family in GENUINE NEED will.. blah blah' - As if the daughter of that guy living in Greece DIDN'T genuinely need somewhere to live! Naah.. She's just a queue jumper - not genuinely in need at all ! LOL

I agree with You on the Daughter of the Guy Who moved to Greece, to some extent. the same thing happened to 1 girl who used to volunteer with Me-her Dad passed away and she was forced to vacate the property, in which she had lived with her Dad. I thought "how ludicrous". on the other hand, I can understand-they pretend to treat Everybody equally, so they would want her to sign up like Others. I say pretend because my 1st comment shows You that they in Fact don't treat People equally. by the Citizen Advice Bureau was I told I was in the priority group for social housing; by the council was I completely refused help with housing. I was on my own. if it wasn't for my Best Friend, Who lent Me money to secure a new room, I would have ended up in the street, and subsequently committing suicide because I wouldn't have the wherewithal necessary to survive in such conditions. regards.
Not everyone is entitled to social housing. Unfortunately many of the cases are difficult to prove. These things take time, resources and a hell of a lot of money to get these selfish scammers banged to rights. They all deserve prion sentences or a very hefty fine and made to pay back every penny they made from the scam.
