Australian Top 10 songs for 1983, as shown on the Christmas episode of Countdown on 24 December 1983. Please note the following error in the Top 10...
Flashdance was NOT the #1 single in Australia for 1983. It was in fact the #2 single. The #1 single was Australiana. However, due to either censorship issues with Australiana or just sheer stupidity on the part of the Countdown producers, the two were swapped around on the show.

I spent the entire year at Woomera AS in 1983. I was a young American Airman who loved music. Watched this show every week. We could only get the ABC on TV anyway. Strange to find upon returing to the USA in Feb, 1984 no one had heard of many of the great Australian bands I listened to. Pat Wilson, Redgum, Australian Crawl, Dragon and above all no one knew of the great comedian Austen Tayshus!

thanks ozfrog. great stuff. i was at home watching this on the couch on sunday nights at 6 30 pm.. has anyone heard of the movie staring gavin wood called houseboat of horror, or is that a false bad bad memory?

1983 I was with Kerry (my now wife travelling the world), the age of my son (24). Also I was born around the same time as Michael Jackson. Some things change, some things don't.

That's because it was a stand-up comedy routine that happened to be released as a "song". It became one of the biggest singles Australian singles of the 80s.

I thought that Flashdance movie was a disgrace. There was almost no dancing in it and what there was wasn't Jennifer Beal but some unknown french bird who wasn't even credited. It was a crook film. Take your pants down and make it happen! What kind of a line is that for the kids buying records.
