Countersinking Screw Holes using Regular Drill Bits

I show you how I went about countersinking screw holes into a temporary flooring transition piece using regular drill bits. I didn't have dedicated countersinking drill bits.
Disclaimer: I'm a DIY homeowner, not a carpenter or contractor so use this information at your own risk.
I first marked the transition piece with a pencil where I wanted my screw holes to be.
Then I chose a drill bit for the pilot hole. The drill bit I selected was just smaller in diameter than the threaded screw I was using. You don't want to select a drill bit for your pilot hole that is too large or else the hole you create will be too big for the threads of your screw to actually "grab" on to anything.
After I drilled a pilot hole, I then selected a larger drill bit that was just slightly larger than the HEAD of the screw.
I used this larger drill bit to drill down into the wood just slightly...you don't want to drill too deep.
You only want to drill down with this large bit just deep enough so the head of the screw will be recessed inside the hole (i.e. you want your screw head to be below the surface of the wood you're screwing it in to).
Once you've drilled your countersunk screw hole, and screwed your screw down into your hole, you can finish it off by putting a plastic decorative cap onto your screw head, or even filling over top of the screw with wood filler.
I didn't add a decorative finish to my transition piece because it is a rather temporary piece for me. (One of these days I intend on changing the carpet and getting a new transition piece at that time.)
But countersinking screw holes like this did the trick. The screw heads are recessed below the level of the wood and I don't catch my feet on the screws as I'm walking over the transition piece.
Thanks for watching the video and I hope it helped you in some way.

Glad to see that what I wondered about is a legit solution. I rarely need to countersink, so this is great--thank you.

This is one of those things that once you know it, it seems super simple, but you never really think of it on your own. Thanks for sharing, helped me out with a small project.
