The influence of the Roman Empire remained evident centuries after it's collapse. One way to prove that is to simply look at the amount of states
that claimed to be the inheritors of Ancient Rome. Many empires derived legitamacy by proving their lineage with the Roman Empire. In today's video we be looking at excatly those . We will be exploring the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Frankish Empire, The Holy Roman Empire, Fascit Italy, the first Bulgarian empire, the Serbian empire and the Russian Tsardom.

Yes, sultanate of rum
@kaansezen2396
@kaansezen2396 2 года назад
Rum is used for all Byzantine Christians, not specifically to Greeks. A Serb, Armenian or Albanian could be also called rum depending on their integration to Roman society (meaning living in Roman cities and institutions in contrast to their autochthonous lands). Rum literally means Roman but there was a difference between the west and the east. The eastern empire didn’t have a homogeneous latin population and the eastern cultures weren’t crushed by the Romans during their conquest (which is more the case for the western part) so the notion of Roman was an acquired identity for many in the east, resting on top of their own identity. Therefore, the term rum also stuck in the common tongue with people with no actual Roman heritage or lineage. Being an eastern Roman didn’t have to do with ethnic origin, whereas in the west all Romans were, partly or in full, Roman by blood.

It wouldve been ugly if they were the 1s who took it. Technically its them who helped us get free but once we heared of the San Stefano map that instantly became the big dream. Other than that area the Russian army was enjoying much freedom. The local Bulgarian population was on their side. Russia was a bit greedy tbh. So big and wanted more. They shouldve given you Moldova and let us have Dobrugea. After all we are the 1s to border the Ottomans for the future. A few hundred thousand inhabitants more wouldnt be bad. Through Romanian situation against the third most populated European based power A&H wasnt good either. The Balkan league dude if only we didnt had these German kings. Tf full of them in our area. Imagine even Romania in Balkan union. By 1916 the first world war be over. The Ottomans be lucky to capture Odrin. In order to make large offences there they would need to leave other regions which would get flooded by Russian hordes or the British hordes in the middle east. A&H barely pushed Serbia until Bulgaria and Germamy steped in. Bulgaria specially flanking and completely screwing up the Serb efforts. @@duxromanorum9861 did u just call Bulgarians Tatars? Tho that area definately had more Turks than Bulgarians. Some regions gotta be fair the Turks managed to outnumber us. I think if the Russians tried to make us both bigger then we could both strike better at their opponents. Giving Romania the Dobrugean land was a mistake. Truth be told I understand the logic that they have to earn something directly for themselves in this war. Cant just free some1 and make another 1 bigger and that's it. Through in the long terms it couldve paid well. Russia did bet on Serbia too much. Shouldve bet on Bulgaria as Bulgarians were far more likely to be useful. Serbia is on the other side of geography. We are closer to the Ottoman capital so if we allied then big army can turn up to the Ottoman capital and that be the end of that stupid struggle we all experienced. The best thing was to not start a second Balkan war. Our German king ordered the army to go. Romania interfered and then got schooled in 1916 by less numerous Bulgarian force. Shouldnt have been that way. The Danude shouldve been the fine border between us. Simple as that. Again. If Balkan union was together in ww1 the war be ending 2 years earlier. The Ottoman state falls in a year due to lack of man power and defences collapsing and large army turns into A&H along with the Romanian army not being over run like in real history. So A&H be facing a lot of soldiers by 1916. It definitely was a relief it didnt had to bother with Serbia. That area wouldve become full of Entente troops. A&H was the underbelly of Germany. It was a push over and that proven since Russia itself managed to best it in occasions.

Concerning France, there's is something else, before Charlemagne. The very country of France, or Kingdom of the Franks, as it was called at this time, was established in Gallia Belgicae, under the authority of Rome. Indeed, Merovech swore fealty to the Empire, and that is actually the reason they expanded south after the West's fall. Childeric and Clovis, Merovech successors, invaded the south (the Vandal kingdom) with the excuse of "restoring the Pax Romana", as official governors of the Roman administration in Gaul. And this legitimacy didn't disappear with West's fall, as the Eastern Emperor even nominated Clovis as "Consul of the Gauls", according to the (pre-schism) Bishop Gregory de Tours. And it is all that, that was the root for Charlemagne's claim on the Roman Emperor title (actually, he even considered to marry Irene, which could have really reunited and reformed the Empire) Long story short : France built itself on its legal claim to be a Roman province, governed by Roman officials
@tylerellis9097

How? Tell me right how Charlemagne marrying Irene would reunite the Empires? •Irene was too old to have kids, •unpopular and would be deposed within a couple years, •Charlemagne already had heirs and Gavelkind inheritance. •The Franks lost against the Byzantines at Venice, they have no way to project power in Constantinople or guarantee Irene’s control on the throne. • The Byzantines would never recognize him as Emperor Etc etc worst Alternate history scenario for reunited Rome. Otto III having kids with Zoe(Basil IIs niece) before he dies would mean more than that scenario.

Since North Macedonia has been historically disputed between Serbia and Bulgaria, has a name dispute with Greece, and has a large Albanian population, and is also located exactly between Rome and Constantinople, To avoid future conflicts, we should all temporarily forget our differences and unite to form a new country with the capital in North Macedonia because it is the central state. @Tom K That's correct, at least in English. In Turkish we don't even make that distinction because until the 19th century Türk meant specifically Turkic, and the urban Turkish speakers of Anatolia and the Balkans simply called themselves Muslims. So, after the nationalization process that whole business of who is Turkish has gotten very confusing.
2 года назад
@Tom K No. At least not exactly. Greeks have this partially misinformed understanding that the coastal Anatolia, or "western Turkey" as they often refer to it, is culturally and demographically similar to Greece and the eastern regions of Anatolia are alien and strange, to make sense of an already confusing and intricate situation. But that's not the case. The entire peninsula was equally Hellenized before the fall of Rome and in fact, most of the Turkic tribes who migrated to Anatolia settled in the Inner Aegean as it best fit their pastoral lifestyle. So if anything the western Turks are more Turkic. This confusion is reinforced by the fact that most Balkan refugees during the collapse of the Ottomans were settled in the Aegean, and they look much more European naturally. But not because theyre Greeks. (Mind you, I say this not to refute that the genetics of modern Turkey are heavily Roman/Greek, but the myth of Western Turkey and so on) If you are very interested, you can check out a video I've posted a while ago of my genetics. I'm half Macedonian immigrant, half from Kemah, Erzincan, right on the eastern border of Anatolia. Today the lands beyond it are also falsely referred to as Anatolia, but I try to use the term in its proper historical and geographical meaning.
@user-jf6yv8rj2s
@user-jf6yv8rj2s 2 года назад
@ That's right. You are half Macedonian immigrant. In Western or coastal Turkey, in 1923 after the population exchange, between Greece and Turkey, the immigrants have settled mostly in this area. For my opinion, the ancestors of all these people, had diverted to Muslim, probably centuries ago. But religion of course can't diverse the blood line. That is another reason for my opinion, why people of Western Turkey are more close to Greeks.

Roman civilization influenced the whole of Europe and over time became a multicultural empire. But at the beginning Romans were nothing more than ancient Italians who acted like other empires, that is, invading other lands, conquering and dominating them. Until Caracalla in 212 AD only Italians had Roman citizenship by right and enjoyed various privileges, which is why there were several revolts. Italy was the only territory that was not a Roman province, but Domina Provinciarum (sovereign), and the political and economical center of the empire. At the moment of maximum expansion under Trajan in 117 AD the Romans wrote "italia rectrix mundi" (Italy rules the world). A century later, citizenship was given to all the inhabitants of the empire which changed completely, but at the time of Caesar and Augustus, Rome was a uniquely Italian empire. The "titles of succession" are jokes, the empire is concluded and even his legal successor from the East became a different civilization and distant from classical Rome. There remains only the culture and history left by Rome, and many in Europe and even outside, have some, but the only nation that can be considered the cultural heir of the Roman Empire is obviously Italy.
@thewitchking852
@thewitchking852 2 года назад
A someone who has studied roman history for years, I feel like Greece does have its own claim. Eastern Rome literally lasted a millennium. Constantinople had long been the capital of the Roman world. The multicultural empire that Rome became shifted east throughout it's existence. This started as early as Mark Antony who seized the East knowing its potential. The only reason people distance Greece or Istanbul from the Roman legacy is the events of the 20th century. After Greece's defeat in the Greco-Turkish war, ideas of restoring "Basileía Rhōmaíōn" died out and there was a concerted effort to look at Greece as an Athenian style "Hellenic Republic" The fact that the west discounts a thousand years of of Roman rule in the middle ages (which is frankly the only reason western civilization survived to become what it is) is honestly a travesty and the fact that it took video games to introduce me to the "Byzantines" is just wild.

The claim of the Ottomans was neither about religion nor nation. It was about imperial legacy. When you capture a capital of an empire, you not only defeat the enemy as a whole, but also you take its lands, legacy, name and power. Constantinople was the capital of the Roman Empire when it was captured by the Ottomans in 1453. Mehmed II the Conqueror was admiring Roman and Greek history and culture. He determined to take Constantinople for not only religious matter (there was hadith of Muhammad “Verily, you shall conquer Constantinople. What a wonderful army will that army be, and what a wonderful commander will that conqueror be.”) he was also thinking of reviving the Roman Empire as a whole. After the conquest, he determined to take Rome. After the conquest, he also took the throne of the Roman Empire and he rightfully called himself as Kayser-i Rum (Roman emperor title in Perso-Arabic-Islamic). Ottoman sultans also had blood of Roman dynasties such as Komnenos. Everyone thinks that the Ottoman Empire cannot be a continuation of the Roman Empire most probably because they were just Muslim. The Roman Empire was initially Latin and Pagan, after it was Greek and Christian. And would it be possible if the Roman Empire was Muslim and Turkish? Even that the Turkic empires ruling Persia such as the Safavid Empire and the Afsharid Empire called themselves as "the Persians" and called the Ottomans as "the Romans". They called themselves "farsî" and called Ottomans as "rûmî" And there is important fact that the Ottoman Empire was an empire of 600 years. Ruling system was highly influenced from Romans.

Constantine didn't move the capital to Constantinople. Depending of what we meant for "capital" he created another one, but didn't removed the previous. He created a second Senate, but kept the first one, moreover only the first one had authority over the whole Empire. This will change around 50 years later, when each Senate was given exclusive authority over its part of the Empire. Even when Justinian re-conquered Italy, he confirmed the role of Rome as co-capital, even if by then it was a de Iure only capital, with modest actual political relevance. If we assume that a pacific partition makes all parts continuation of the previous state, Eastern Rome was without a doubt the continuation of the Roman Empire. But so would be the case for states that seceded from the Empire but maintained their administration, such as Rome, Venice and other.

Ottoman Empire is by far the most legitimate successor. Anyone will understand that since the Byzantine Empire was the actual Roman Empire, just the eastern part of it, they without doubt are the true successors(they weren’t referred to as byzantines before a historian mentioned the name after they no longer existed). Now, since Rome no longer was the center of Roman culture, Constantinople became the new second Rome. The conqueror of this capital would then of course transfer the city’s belongings to the conqueror, along with the title as well imo. Mehmed 2 let the patriarch of Constantinople recognized him being the new successor instead of shutting the whole patriarch down for being heretics. That seals the whole discussion.

Charlemage's Francia - no bloodline but based on demographic identity 4. H. R. E. - as a decendent of Francia and on demographic identity. 5. Ottomans - solely on demographics 6. Napoleon Stefanopoulos was not Italian, was descendant of the 700 exiled Maniots during Gerakaris's rule in 1670's who fled to Corsica which was under Genoese control at the time. Also, he had a strong claim to the title because he controlled all of Italian peninsula inclunding Rome, he conquered the HRE which was another claimant of the title, he conquered a really big chunk of Europe, so he was in real a powerful emperor and his forefathers were low aristocrats of ERE. Basileia ton Rhomaion or Eastern Roman Empire was the truly Rome for many reasons such as: 1) The late emperor Flavius Theodosius I Augustus divided Roman empire to he sons Flavius Arcadius and Honorius (that means Western and Eastern Roman Empire was actually the Roman Empire ruled by two emperors in west and east) 2) All laws and imperial edicts continue to exist in the east provinces(ex. Constitutio Antoniniana(212AD) was an edict by the Emperor Caracalla and exists until 1453). 3) The late emperor Constantine after the end of civil war reformed the Empire and then moved the capital city from Rome to Byzantium, known after that as Nova Roma or Constantinopolis. The Emperor Constantine when he moved the capital he moved actually the identity of Rome itself because Constantinople were designed like Rome with 7 hills, a senate house , a circus or Hippodrome, Roman column from all provinces of the Empire and aqueduct. 4) After the sack of Ravenna 476AD and abolition of Western Empire the imperial insignia were sent to Constantinople by Odoacer. 5) Constantinople was the last capital city of the whole Roman Empire before the political division by Theodosius Augustus . After that division the capitals in the west was first Mediolanum and second Ravenna and in the east Constantinople remained as capital city.

Greeks and Italians are rightfully heirs of Rome since these 2 nations were very close culturally since the ancient Rome Greeks preserved the Roman identity until the very end! for 1000 years! and if you include the ancient Rome too it's 1400 years!. So we have 1000+ years of a continuous historical connection with Rome with the exception of crusaders conquest that paused the empire for 50 years. it's undisputed fact that eastern roman empire was the natural continuation of Roman empire Constantine himself was the legitimate emperor of Roman empire and moved the capital to Constantinople it's almost laughable for Franks, Bulgarians, French, Ottomans and god knows who others to claim to be heirs of Rome since they don't have any historical connection or a cultural continuation with Rome nor contributed anything culturally to Rome!

Many people focus on Italian or Greek claims, but not so much Russia, who I believe had the most convincing claim following the fall of Constantinople. Being the new center of Orthodox Christianity, the main religion in the east Roman Empire, the religious claim was quite well grounded. There was also the legitimacy of their blood, having married a Byzantine royal right around the fall of the East. While the HRE had some ground, it wasn’t an empire, and it didn’t really have any religious basis other than “The Pope pushed me into it.”
