I would suggest that Gilmours' greatest live "Comfortably Numb", song ending guitar solo, was at Pink Floyds' 1994 Pulse Concert at Earls Court in London. It's one of the last of the 111 performances of Pink Floyds 94 "The Division Bell" World Tour. The tour was from March to October, in 68 cities, in 17 countries worldwide.

The Pulse concert Pink Floyd was on fire. This solo is one of his greatest solos recorded. That said, you really should listen to and watch Gilmour perform "Sorrow". There are two lead singers of Pink Floyd Gilmour and Gilmour's Strat.

According to a guitar magazine years ago, David Gilmour was deemed The Undisputed Dean of the Compound Bend and has practically perfect note placement. He admits that he never was a fast playing guitar player but I'd rather hear him play than other guitarist.

This Live at Pompeii 2016 is my favourite version, harder edged than earlier recordings, also the sheer enthusiasm of Steve Distanislao on drums beefs up the performance, when you see guys still enjoying playing their music after so many years it shines through in the sound.

David Gilmour is a legitimate Living Guitar God. The man can do more with one note than most can do with an entire fret board. A bit of trivia. The guitar strap hes using is one of Jimi Hendrix's Gilmours wife bought it for him for his birthday. You should react to the Pulse performances

"His solos serves the song". Truer words were never spoken. Gilmour's solos are as much an extension of the lyrics, as they are guitar solos. It doesn't just add to the song, it completes it in so many ways.

There are a number of live performances of the song to be found on youtube and the Pulse solo is truly mega BUT I cannot agree that it is the best because all of the different performances I have seen so far are perfect in their own different ways. What I'm trying to say is that I find them all truly memorable and exceptional, and actually there are aspects of this solo that I prefer to the Pulse concert. All of this is 'in my humble opinion' of course!

A secret favorite of mine is the version Gilmour solo 1986 at the colombian vulcano benefit - maybe the most metal version of this song ever! And Venice 1989 of course (edit: WITH the few bars cut out in the recent remaster - will never understand that)

I think most people would point to his Pulse performance of this song from 1994. It’s way cleaner than this one, and goes places this solo doesn’t. With that said, I find this Pompeii performance (and all of his more recent solos) to be more satisfying. They’re a little dirtier, more distorted. Still technically perfect, but I just love the deeper tone, it suits his age and wisdom well. This solo, he’s done hundreds of times, and while they all follow the same basic structure and progressions, every single one of them is slightly different if you listen closely.

I was one of the 2000 or so people in the crowd for this performance in Pompeii; a birthday present to myself and one of the most special and memorable gigs I've ever been to. Great to see that David is working on a new album due to come out next year. I personally don't think that it was his best live solo (the sound mix was also very substandard on this particular rendering) but music's such a subjective thing, many are always going to disagree. I'm just glad he's still out there making music for the sake of making music - he doesn't need the money, that's for sure.
@PickupthePieces76

I think the Gdansk version doesn't get enough love. Also I think for Echoes is it the definitive live version. But also the solo on Fat Old Sun is awesome and much grittier than David's other solo's. On Shine On they do the actual glass intro and David does the first verses practically a capella, it is magical. So all David fans seek out the Gdansk version of the Floyd classics and you will not be disappointed. Add-on - David's guitar solo on In Any Tongue (Pompeii live version) is soul gripping. The whole live version of the song is something to seek out. His later solo work, especially live might not be known to all fans, who may tend to stick with the Floyd stuff. That is understandable of course, but don't miss out on his other work too.

Nice, but this is NOT pink Floyd (David with other players), and is from a much later performance than the "Pulse" version - it is far more clear and powerful. Here it is - judge for yourself: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vi7cuAjArRs.html Then, try watching "Sorrow", which IMO is even more powerful and emotional: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JdPTec5ADFE.html

Perfection. He doesn't overplay .. Now .. Try "The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil (Official Lyric Video)" The guitar solo is the most restrained ever. It isn't the solo as much as the parts in between. He knows when to shut up and shout out and this is the most elegant version. "Gary Moore ''Separate Ways'' (HQ live from London 1992,with extended guitar intro )" He pulls stuff out of another plain. "Lou Reed - Sweet Jane from Rock n Roll Animal" Listed in the top 200 and a duel solo. "Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain (Live in Syracuse, March 30, 1985)" Prince purposefully ran from the guitar hero dungeon. He let others play and had other projects. When taken from the top guitarists list he did this "2021 Remaster "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with Prince, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Steve Winwood" When Prince had his turn he never gave it back, watch al the folks as they try to get the order back. He has so much fun. "Stairway to Heaven Stanley Jordan" specific again and put up by youtuber Randy Rhoads. Amazing ability. "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)" If you find the live video from "Rainbow Bridge" then even bestest ... This is another above and beyond tune. "Ted Nugent - Hibernation" put up by blite13. If someone wanted to learn rock guitar. This is the first lesson. This is a tune Terrible Ted used to practice with. He is the most under rated guitarist ever because he has absolutely no ability to shut his mouth. He can make more people P-oed in 5 minutes than anyone else in a lifetime. He shuts up and lets loose on a beautiful jam here.

I was fortunate enough to have seen this tour in 2016 when it came through Chicago. He was 70 years old that year an as you can hear, still sounded amazing. The Pink Floyd 'Pulse' live version from 1994 might be the best performance of 'Comfortably Numb', but I love this version, too. I also suggest checking the Pulse concert version of 'Sorrow', which features another amazing Gilmour solo.

Certainly the best for the time period of the concert. David has been making magic with that "solo" for so long it is impossible to pick just one. The original studio track is amazing and the live versions over the decades are also amazing as they morph while staying true to the original record. I said "solo" because this 2nd one, the dark solo, is really an entire performance that is an integral part of the story the entire song is telling. ❤ Cool channel you have. Keep it rolling!

I remember in 1979 or '80, I heard a radio interview with David on, I think, Westwood One out of L.A. where he talked about his playing style. He said he was less interested in shredding (though I suspect he has the chops to do that), but more interested in the giving the melody room to occupy its own space. And, to me, David occupies that space better than anyone. He wrote the music for "Comfortably Numb" for a solo project, but brought in to the band for "The Wall," and Roger wrote the lyrics.

As far as guitarists who have a “sound”, a style. People who play for emotion and not necessarily to “show boat”. Some that come to mind: David Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Carlos Santana, Jack White, Mike McCreedy. Those are just my favorites. My husband loves Eddie Van Halen. And while he was incredibly, majestically talented he played to show off. His guitar solos were never the soul of the song.

Live in Gdańsk is, to me, the greatest ever performance of Comfortably Numb. Whether the *solo* is the greatest solo of all time, I don’t know. PULSE is up there but the song itself was played at such a slow, meandering pace that it detracts, for me. Gdańsk has live strings and Rick Wright’s last ever vocal performance. There is a nice raw edge to Pompeii. It’s like choosing your favorite child…

I’m not a guitarist, but does David have Gibson knobs on a Fender guitar? Don’t kill me.. I thought I recognized those same knobs from my brother’s 335

Stealing somebody else's comment here, and I cant remember who to even credit them, but.....the best description / comment I ever read on RU-vid was "If I ever go blind, I'm using this solo as pornography"....I loved it so much, I upgraded my turntable.

Who gives a rat's A R S about what a country guitarist thinks about David Gilmour.

Although still awesome, that's probably the worst solo of that song I've heard Gilmore do... Imho, obviously

I think Comfortably Numb at the Pulse Concert sounds better. Same song, just sounds better.

I still think that the "pulse" concert is a better guitar solo by David Gilmour..But great reaction. Greetings from Norway

One thing I'd like to add: He is not "technically" soloing (A person with a guitar and nothing else). He is playing with the rest of the band supporting him, which adds to it in a special way, as in the the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Yes, the main focus is on Gilmour's virtuoso performance, but I don't think it would be as impactful without backup from the rest of the players.

That was weird, some pictures of Gilmour, but the tones from an imitator ( maybe the Australian cover band?) and then a foreign drone shown in pictures, not the original band member I just shut down, did not want to look further after 1.45

I'm still going with Echoes as Gilmour's most iconic guitar performance at Pompeii with no audience.

My favorite guitarist! Looks like this is a more recent video but I'd recommend an older one from the 80's or the 90's. He's slowed a bit in his old age but it still is epic. Not bad for a 77 year old, but when he was younger, he was even better!

Just my opinion, but when comparing this to Knopfler's solo's it just sounds like a bunch of notes played in the same key. I can hum or recall the melody of Knopfler's solo's, but I can't do that with this. Also, the number of notes per measure Knopfler can play due to his finger picking style is unmatched by most other superstars, and he just seems to put them together in a much more memorable way. Again, just my opinion.

Most decent cover-band guitarists can play these notes, in this order, at this speed, with the bends. It's not hard. And yet nobody sounds like Gilmour, not even the best of the best. He's 100% about feel, touch and instinct. Not sure it reads great in this clip though tbh. The records showcase it better I think.

I'm sorry, ,but from 1 player to another....this is NOT his best! That has to be the one from the "Pulse" tour in '94.

Country? You're comparing this masterpiece to country? No twangy telecaster here.

I am not gonna lie. Dave was just not on it in this concert. There was times that I question his improvisation. It was out of place. Sure, he changed it up a bit from the Pulse days. Some of the changes I liked. Other times he didn't hit the notes. The lasers were pretty nice. Nothing will ever top the Pulse performance and I am ok with that.

If you are a guitarist and haven’t heard gilmour play comfortably numb solo you have been living in a cave or doing this for views/subscribers

I don't think you need a test my dude David Gilly is one of maybe 2 or 3 people that have ever lived than can fucking destroy a guitar and rip off something no one else can do. Stevie Ray Vaughn could do anything and then maybe who? The worst part is that you can see what he is playing but no one else can do it. He hits everything so far away from normal its sick. Goes into progressions that are just so disgusting while making it sound like anyone can pick a Toys R Us guitar and change music. He is right at the very tippy top of genius

This is criminal to listen to just part of a Pink Floyd song. Heck, it's a little messed up to not listen to the whole album at once, if we are being honest. You really CAN'T get it, unless you hear it all. It's like eating the frosting on a cake, but not the rest. It doesn't make any sense.
