GLOBAL 3302: Topics in International Cultures and Civilizations. Topic: U.S.-Russia Partnership for Global Solutions

The course will take place on Canvas and live sessions will take place on Zoom. The start date is January 16, 2024.
The course will meet LIVE in required synchronous sessions during class sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 8:00-8:50 am (Central Standard Time). The Zoom link will be shared via email and posted on Canvas.
There is no formal textbook for the course! All readings will be shared digitally and will be freely available on Canvas. Additional materials will be provided by the guest speakers in the course.
Course Description: Advanced study of a particular world region and/or culture including, but not limited to, its language, geography, history, arts, commerce, politics, and government. Emphasis on film, media, international communication, or other subjects of global study. Repeatable for credit as topic changes. No prerequisite. Strongly recommended: GLOBAL 2301 and GLOBAL 3301, concurrently or previously.
This course is part of the “U.S.-Russia Partnership for Global Solutions” project sponsored by the U.S. Dept. of State.
The project provides online and in-person opportunities for meaningful exchange to build connections between U.S. and Russian students and scholars. To find a common ground for collaboration, the U.S. and Russian participants will address global issues in search for sustainable solutions, which will provide a platform to learn about each other’s cultures, values, and institutions. Examples of global issues include: sustainability, U.S. History, Civic Engagement, Accessibility Rights, Diversity and Inclusion, Accessibility Rights, Technology, and Gender and Equity.
This online course with U.S. students at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and Russian students from universities across Russia is the first part of this project.
Instructor Information
Peggy Semingson, Ph.D., Associate Professor of TESOL
Bio: Peggy Semingson is an associate professor of TESOL in the Department of Linguistics and TESOL in the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Arlington. She is a former classroom teacher, elementary bilingual/ESL teacher, and bilingual (Spanish/English) reading specialist in Texas and California. Her Ph.D. is in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Language and Literacy Studies from The University of Texas at Austin in 2008. Her research interests include innovations in TESOL, digital pedagogies, media-based learning, online learning, and online TESOL teacher education. She has taught ESL courses for adults through the Dallas Public Library and through web-based global ESL programs. She has a RU-vid channel and you can follow her on Twitter (@PeggySemingson). Konstantin Shestakov, Director of Webilang
Bio: Holding a degree in foreign language pedagogy and linguistics from Omsk State Pedagogical University, Konstantin Shestakov furthered his education with postgraduate programs in language teaching in Moscow State Linguistic University and instructional technology at Iowa State University as a Fulbright scholar. Throughout his career, Konstantin has collaborated with various institutions, including Drake University, where he worked as an online Russian language instructor, and later established partnerships between Omsk State University, Omsk Law Academy, and the University of Texas at Arlington. Notably, he was part of the UTA team that organized the RARAC project in 2021, fostering Russian-American academic cooperation. Konstantin's professional journey includes teaching English at Omsk State University and Omsk Law Academy before he founded online language school Webilang in 2013. He's expanded his online school, currently catering to over 200 students globally. At the same time he contributed to educational exchanges between Omsk State University and the University of Texas at Arlington, promoting cultural understanding. As a Russian language instructor at Middlebury College, Concordia Language Villages and a Webilang English teacher he has emphasized a task-based approach, encouraging students to learn the language through realistic and relevant communicative tasks.
