A measure of the strength of relationship between x and y is the covariance.
A measure of the strength of the linear relationship between x and y that doesn’t depend on the units in which x and y are measured is the correlation coefficient.
The least squares line is the line that minimizes the sum of squared vertical distances between the points on the scatter plot and the line.
