Two concerns that compost toilet users may have regarding their cover material are what to do in freezing weather, and whether to use dry sawdust or not. Both of these issues are addressed in this video by Joe Jenkins. Filmed by Joseph Jenkins, author of the Humanure Handbook (www.amazon.com/Humanure-Handb...) and The Compost Toilet Handbook (www.amazon.com/Compost-Toilet....

Do you have any thoughts on using bokashi bran as a cover material?

Is auto-combustion ever an issue with damp sawdust? I have seen hay stacks that have too much moisture self-compust as the bacteria inside them starts to feed off of the moisture and brings the heat up to combustion level. I've always feared the same thing happening with sawdust. BTW, live in a warm climate so it never ever freezes.

Not an issue.

you have never had problems with sawdust getting moldy in the center when leaving it outside? if it happens, would it be an issue? in other words: could i still use it as cover material? you say "rotten material" is good, does this include moldy material? I have a pile of fresh woodships mixed with fresh leaves in the garden and it's getting moldy. Now I received a truck load of sawdust and wonder how to store it

Moldy doesn't matter. Wood chips will develop fungi mycelium, but it doesn't hurt the compost. Sawdust doesn't get moldy; at least mine never has over a period of 45 years. Some mycelium growth is not an issue.

Mr. Jenkins, my wife and I are recent converts after discovering our home's drainage pipes had at some point in the past been redirected into a nearby waterway, presumabley after the 60's era septic tank collapsed. We're having bad odor problems in the home. Using sawdust from kiln dried yellow poplar and Eastern white pine (untreated). I'm gathering from this video that the problem is a result of the sawdust not being wet/biologically active, and therefore unable to block odors. This is confusing to me, because many other RU-vidrs, blog reviewers, etc say I need very dry sawdust so as to absorb the moisture in the bucket. These people says their toilet has absolutely NO odor. What are your thoughts on the above? My wife is threatening to take out a loan for a septic installation (due to the smell), but that's the last thing I want to do!

I have 3 compost toilets in my home and no odor at all. I'm not sure what you're doing wrong. Cover material too dry maybe. Not using enough probably.

Greetings from Guyana, (South America) What are your views on using sand as a cover material?

Won't work. Needs to be carbon based.

When sawdust is not available, what else can I use for covering? Can I use dry leaves? What other organic material can I use? Thank you

Dry leaves in a blender dry will turn into something very similar to saw dust but lighter.

Hello I want to convert in to a bucket- compost toilets. And I live in a worm-hot place.. do you have tips how to keep the cover metirial wet in summer time? How about horse manure? Is it good for cover metirial?

We had no problem in Fresno, California, with hot, dry temperatures, by simply keeping the compost in the bins covered with a thick layer of hay, straw, or gasses. A year later when I checked the piles, they were quite moist under the cover material. They had not dried out. Of course, we do not separate urine out or anything like that.

I use partially composted mule maure on my pile outside. I live in a rural community, own a mule and have neighbors who keep livestock in pens on their property, so have access to lots of manure which I collect into a bin for animal manure. I have not used it as a cover material inside in the bucket as I have not needed to. I found a good supply of sawdust for the time being. If sawdust ever gets scarce here (a possibility), I plan on trying decomposed mule/horse manure. It's been 8 months since you wrote this question. Have you tried hourse manure? If yes, how did it work?
