@mica onyx How did you attach the drywall to the paneling? With nails or with glue? How about the moldings, was there a gap left between the new drywall and the existing moldings?

The drywall needs to be attached to the studs behind the paneling which can be done by marking where the paneling seams are or using a stud finder beforehand. Don’t use nails, use drywall screws. Nails will pop loose over time. No glue either.

Really? I've never heard of that. So I should do that instead of taping?

TheRejektid I buy white vinegar in the gallons by the case. Cleans anything with the right water/vinegar mixture. Even store name brands. Cleans any greasy, smokey, dirty surface like a charm. Plus spray plants and vegetables, it kills bugs too. Vinegar and baking soda are the two best cleaners in this World, (just do not use them together, LOL).

I'm closing on my first "flip" house tomorrow and it has paneling throughout that I'm gonna mud and paint. Do you use tape or just mud only?

@@ramblin_man23 No need for tape... BUT... First rule of thumb is CLEAN those walls really really really good... but build up of grim, smoke etc will hinder you putting anything on the walls. Buy Heavy duty Baby Wipes... (This will be your best friend) Get the 3 Pak... believe me you will use them all. But before you can use the Baby Wipes, they are for the finale cleaning... If you can use the Awesome you get at the Dollar store. It takes very little in a spray bottle, and Get GREEN Scrubies at the Dollar Store, or at Lowes (heavy duty) like what you'd scrub your pots and pans... I cut mine up in little squares and use the hell out of them before I throw them away. Clean the walls... (let dry) after you wipe them down with the baby wipes... Mud the lines only, you don't really need to do all the wall unless you want to... You'll need to add a little water to the mud... whip it up or stir it up... Let dry... over night at least 12 hours... then lightly sand the wall if you need too... then you can paint... I always paint the wall WHITE first... because you'll need 2 coats anyway, since the mud will soak up some of the paint. Then paint the 2nd coat the color of your choice. Remember, You only get TRUE color ONLY when you paint on WHITE... I paint with only one paint... and I have been doing this since I was 18 years old... I'm 65 now... Use Wal-Mart Exterior paint... nothing else... it is GREAT!!!!! and cheap... and it washes up very good.. I have pictures that would blow you away what this paint can do!!! It can cover black!!! This paint is for the inside of the house or outside... (I just hand painted a Vintage Travel Trailer) after I hand stripped it down to the metal... It turned out BEAUTIFUL... I hope this helps... I kinda got carried away.... Just remember this... be very patient... it's hard work, but worth it... ... and always do your floors LAST... Paint your ceiling first... WHITE is best, it makes the room look Bigger!!!!

You're awesome replying thank you. So clean with Awesome/water mix and green scrub pads. Let dry. Wipe down cracks with baby wipes. Add a little water to the mud. Apply and smooth with wet hand. Let dry over night. Lightly sand and then paint. Only apply 1 layer of mud? Doesn't the lines shrink and show up after 1 layer? Thanks

@@ramblin_man23 SEE... Men always just say it so simply... in a few lines! LOL The only thing is... you need to CLEAN EVERY INCH of the wall before putting on the mud and painting... I have tried to "skip" this and paid for it later..... Paint will not adhere to dirty walls. I'm getting ready today to CLEAN the 1985 Class A RV... (this one was SO BAD, that the man gave it to me!) It was a Meth Lab!!! This is my second one!!! UGH Truthfully using a Steamer, like what they use to clean couches, works on walls really well... (I forgot about that)... especially when the walls are as dirty as these.. NASTY. Plus they smoked in it, (the yellow celling)... AND be sure to rinse off the awesome/water first, let dry then right before you're going to paint, THEN use the Baby Wipes... you'll be so surprised what the Baby Wipes will show!!! I'll think I have done a great job... cleaning something literally 5 times, then I use the baby wipes, and every time it shows me there is more to do... But again worth it, so the paint... will adhere to it, or it WILL PEEL off later!!! To "Flip" Houses and RVs... Rule of Thumb: It takes twice the money and twice the time... but you're hoping it will make you more than twice the money!!! If you do use the Awesome... only put 1/2 ounce to 16 oz. that stuff is amazing... or AWSOME, I even use it in my laundry. But it does NOT take much, and then you'll have to rinse and rinse to get it off the walls... or anything else!!!! It is very concentrated.

Came here to say the same thing. One good knock on the wall, and the mud is going to end up coming loose I would think.

@@Jess-vl9ks there is a limit but this is not it.... most panel grooves are only quarter inch wide n deep . If u go this pricey route the broad flat areas should be left with as little material as possible during application to cut down screening or cracking. Be sure to use a ventilator and sand ( screen) with pole to speed process. As stated by diyer u must prime and paint at which point nothing will be able to fall off. Check out : paint wood paneling like a pro: Benjamin Moore. It is more efficient but again sand with a pole and lung protection.

Looks like she skimmed it on paper thin...sealed with primer n paint. If so should be durable, but it is an extra step, just clean with tsp, fill with a good non shrinking wood filler, prime and paint. Do some test areas in a corner if u r doing a whole house or ask MANAGER at local hardware store for best performing product suggestions. U can do it

I did mine and it is holding up great after 7+ years.

Which killz primer did you use?

Fahliil Vahlok they have held up just like walls. The only spot to have some slight cracking is on another wall where the wood paneling was already severely cracked before putting the joint compound on.

I'm glad you found it helpful! It is the most affordable way I could find, but if your renting just make sure the owner is ok with it because I'm not sure it could be turned back to paneling as easily.

Make sure your landlord is cool with it!

D All my rooms in my house are paneling and so I have been able to try both spackle (living room) and joint compound (kitchen). In my opinion, I prefer the joint compound because it seems to hold up better and overall be better quality than spackling. My living room has been painted for about a year now and there are a few little areas where the spackle is starting to crack a little bit. It’s fine for small holes or little jobs, but for something larger like a whole room then I would suggest going straight for the joint compound. Hope this helps.

The compound has held up perfectly! There’s a crack on one wall but it’s where the wood paneling was cracked underneath. I did attempt drywall on one wall and while it was easy it was way more work than is worth. To remove the wood paneling I ended up having to remove the door frame. Joint compound is way easier!

It still looks exactly the same as when I first finished it. But definitely check these comments as some people have given advice that could’ve saved me a lot of work!

Kari Coffey so far no issues, I’ve hung a few different frames up, haven’t put anything too heavy though. I assume it’ll be fine as long as you have a nail long enough to go through the wall behind this stuff.

dnsmithnc its actually held up amazingly! The walls still look exactly the same as when I did this, except for one spot. Over a spot where the wood paneling was already severely cracked the joint compound has cracked as well. It’s not noticeable unless you get up close to the wall because it’s pretty small. There were other spots where there was some smaller cracks in the wood and it didn’t come through the joint compound so I think it’s only a problem with larger splits. Only time will tell though.

Marie R it had paint on it, from the previous owners but otherwise no. Just cleaned and sanded to prep it for the compound.

Alease Cherry yeah it’s one of my biggest problems, every time I do a DIY I end up forgetting to get a before and after shot. I’m working on it for my next diy. as for the products I went over them at the beginning but I didn’t give specific brand names because it doesn’t really matter what brand you use and you’re gonna want a different joint compound based on your needs.
