COVID 10: Is COVID-19 an airborne disease? Will we all need to wear face-masks against SARS-CoV-2?

There seems to be a lot of confusion in the droplet versus aerosol discussion and how these relate to the spread of COVID-19. Is it airborne and inhaled or droplet based via fomites and hands? The uncomfortable truth is that we have evidence for both modes.
In this video we first define what a droplet and an aerosol is based on their behaviour in the environment. We then examine both through the findings from two published studies. We will also discuss how long viral particles survive and stay viable and able to infect after they fall on a surface or get suspended in the air.
For COVID-19, we agree that the various transmission routes may predominate in different settings. The airborne route is relevant for hospitals and hospital staff as well as crowded and badly ventilated public spaces. Everyone else is more likely to get the virus through touching surfaces, bad hand hygiene and then touching their face.

I'm a Biology researcher doing my PhD, and this is by far one of the most reliable videos I've watched about COVID-19. Not only does it support the accuracy of its statements with reliable sources (eg. peer-reviewed research papers) to explain an important epidemiology concept, it also practices critical thinking----it does so not by answering a question, but laying out what has been reported in the research field, and more important, and what remains unknown but calls for answers.

money penni1 No papers are perfect. But here we are talking the probability of a certain source of information being more reliable as compare to another. In that sense, if the data can be peer-reviewed and, even better, reproduced, then the data is more convincing than untraceable information from the social media which can be politically manipulated. Nonetheless, this is not to say that all data are accurate or reflect the truth. Data only reflects what the experimenter observer.

And yet the CDC uses the conventional attitude of distance by country folks to exemplify those who refuse to use their methods of Covid resistance. There seems to be social pressure in the West to downplay the importance of aerosol transmission outside of hospitals, and even in them. Yesterday a doctor was sent away from Ludlow Community Hospital (Shropshire, UK) because her use of personal protective equipment was alarming patients and other staff who saw her.

Yes because the CDC said facemasks is OK because they're telling everyone its solely transmitting by droplets, despite having one of their own studies showing that it can stay in t he air for up to three hours, how long they measured.

@@kocampo86 It's the biggest BS ever that CDC said corona is transmitted ONLY through droplets. Even before that new study that said it lives in the air for 3h was out, CDC should have warned about potential air transmission imo. Seriously, how does it make sense that a virus that spreads only through droplets made it from China to the rest of the world in a few months? Do people go around sneezing in each others faces?

So moisten the air in hospitals with humidity, or do you have to be taught how to evaporate water, humidifying the air will weight anything airborne down
@moonbear5929
@moonbear5929 4 года назад
I tend to disagree about that. A virus is sealed in a layer of essentially fat, which has to have moisture to be effective. This fat layer helps protect the inside of the virus. As they said in the video, the virus can live for days on plastic, second on steel. For some reason copper seems to kill it faster than steel. But the virus lives the shortest on things like paper, cardboard, fabrics. My theory for this is the porous materials tend to draw (wicks) out the moisture from the "body" of the virus thus drying it out and killing it. The virus wants to live in a dark moist and warm place (like your lungs). Humidifying the air would only help the virus live longer on all surfaces, no matter where it drifted. It would only aid in viruses replicating themselves making them even more plentiful. I'm thinking the opposite, dry everything! Heat blast anything that can take enough heat to kill the virus. Detergents work to break down the fatty layer a virus has, so washing as many things as you can with water and a simple detergent (dish soap, laundry soap and the like) will help kill the virus. Wash down everything as often as possible, wash the floors when you can, counter tops, walls, bed railings, head boards and foot boards, the whole dang shebang! In a hospital, they should have a constant cleaning crew washing things down, the most touched objects, cleaned. I never see cleaning crews in hospitals. I have seen dried blood on floors that you could tell had been there for days if not weeks. I never see them spraying and wiping down anything. I might see some one sweep the floor or actually mop it once in a while. Hospitals are supposed to be clean places, but really, they are one of the dirtiest places you could hang around in. I hate going to hospitals, I never feel comfortable there.
@guytelfer1353
@guytelfer1353 4 года назад
@@moonbear5929 excellent, I was leaning towards using the heavy moisture in a way toward washing the virus downwards, I would recommend using the sprinkler systems in buildings to disinfect or send humidity maybe in vapor form and involving pesticides and insecticides, without being able to visually see a virul particle we're assuming it's everywhere and airborne unless you have an electron microscope I'm sure it's carried by insects(bedbugs, nats, mosquitoes, ect) recommending crop dusting everywhere at this point using DDT and other chemicals is less harmful with education about these chemicals and warnings to the public when spraying areas , they burnt everything after the black plague

this might be a dumb question but if ventilation is the key can it be a way for the virus to enter your home as well, for example if I open the window and lets say my window is close to the road/sidewalk and a covid infected person pass by and cough the aerosols can still be push in my house thru the window correct? I've watched some video that its not that easy, they say that outside the virus experienced a lot like sunlight mosture and wind that the aersol breaks and the virus eventually become unviable but still it confuses me if its safe to open my windows. Our house is design where our windows are close to the streets so I'm afraid if letting air inside our house is safe cause their is fair amount of people passing by.

hello thank you for the vid, so i just wanna understand, are you saying that although the main way of spread is by coughing and snezzing, the virus goes relatively quiclky to the ground and so its when we touch still active surfaces with the virus and do not clean our hands and touch our faces that it infects us ? and that actually catching the virus by inhaling is less common and that wearing a mask needs to be done very carefully cuz then the mask itself becomes a surface that may have the virus and if we touch the mask and then our face without cleaning our hands then again we get infected? and so its actually just better to wear no gloves or no masks and just not touch our faces unit we clean our hands , especially if we go out to stores or in crowds?..plz explain Lisa

Yes, the viral load was lower outdoors, that doesn't really need a study but it makes a good baseline. What is important is, is this enough to infect someone? Could it even be beneficial? Would it give the body a chance to identify it while not enough to overwhelm the immune system...or is a tiny amount enough to take you out since we have no immunity.
@CRAZYCR1T1C
@CRAZYCR1T1C 4 года назад
It doesn’t work like that I am afraid. Your immune system only kicks in when the virus multiply and really show up in numbers. You can still be fully infected with just 1 virus particle. The probability is extremely low. It’s all about probabilities with huge numbers involved.

The re-suspension of viruses in the air happened because of discharging of plastic gowns due to the electrostatic property of plastic materials. Go to changing room. Take off outer clothing, and hang, and spray with Lysol. Then have alcohol trays your dip your gloves in. Then take them off. Leave room. Then have a fan blow viruses out the open window. Make sure the fan is not on when you are in there. Wash your hands after you leave room.

OUR HEALTH CARE WORKERS DESERVE ADEQUATE PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT. We need to take whatever steps necessary to keep first responders and healthcare workers safe. Initially (approximatley 2+weeks ago) they insisted that there was NO WAY that the virus could be spread through the air and therefore limited their protective gear- especially masks. They fought this and forced them to give them the protection that they needed. Thank you for this- I am sending it to my wife and she will share it with her fellow nurses dealing with this pandemic up close and personal!

He didnt have a bathroom in his room so he goes out to use it. The bathroom was beside his door but then he went out when i was about to walk in the hallway. Microdroplets present in the air can be reduced by applying a water spray or water with disinfectant with the necessary care, especially in places with crowded people. The contaminated drops are hydrophilic and can coalesce and fall to the floor by applying a spray on the air with the risk of contamination. Only the surfaces and floors are being disinfected, however the air that is the main source of contagion is neglected. Thus, the rate of contagion by coronavirus can be appreciably decreased.

Why no gloves? Because you wash your hands and that is enough. Doesn't matter where you dispose the gloves, they have the virus. And you don't know who can touch it. What is unsatisfacory in the testing of surfaces is the question whether the reason is the material type or the speed of water evaporation. Naturally, a cardboard will dry quicker than polished steel or plastic. Copper is special because it is toxic. If it is the water and not the material type, then humidity is a more important factor.

Because they're saying while in the larger droplet scenario, it falls to the ground quickley (6 ft./2 m). I also agree that after it lands on the floor and dries that it can be stirred up (the aerosol scenario) while within the 3-day duration. I agree, there is conflicting information, but when establishing guidelines for the general public they dumb it down too much or do not sufficiently qualify the statements. I have similar contentions of masks: the typical homemade ones are not good enough.

This is why you need to be wearing a real respirator when entering a public building. You can buy a half mask elastomeric respirator with P100 filter (HEPA) cartridges online. About $30 to $50 bucks. North and 3M are both well known elastomeric half mask brands but there are others. If fitted properly and there is no beard growth, and a good face seal, they can provide 100% filtration of virus particles. The next best is a N95 or P95. They provide up to 95% filtration down to 0.3 microns (individual virus particles 0.15 microns are rare, they are usually stuck to other particles or water so they are larger). If you have questions check out the NIOSH website. They approve respirators for OSHA (the agency that protects workers who work in hazardous jobs such as asbestos). Make sure the respirator you wear is NIOSH approved. They have a posted a useful table of international testing on various brands of N95s. Face coverings won't protect you because they do not filter the air you breathe.

This week a one year old baby has contracted Covid 19 from supermarket shopping. Based up behavioural traits and how many people (esp at present with substantial set distances between individuals ) we can conclude that there is little doubt that either the virus seems to be airborne , or as we know for sure it resides in contagious doses upon objects ( likely the handle of the trolley , presuming the baby was within reach of it being pushed around ) The former is the most likely conclusion . Definitely suggests airborne and more contagious than suspected previously.

@SRY473
@SRY473 4 года назад
Probably very small. They say that to catch it, you need to have prolonged, close contact with someone that is infected. It's not just a question of whether you were exposed to the virus, but a question of the viral load - how MUCH virus you were exposed to. So if you're in close proximity to someone that's infected for 15 minutes, you could get enough virus to be infected. That's why they don't want large groups of people gathering together. I wouldn't worry about it. Just be alert for symptoms and do your best to practice social distancing and good hand hygiene.

@@kayummiah5017 Yeah, you're probably fine - except for the food part. I really doubt you were exposed. Do you even know if the other fellow was infected? It doesn't sound like he or she coughed in your face or anything. I'd think you could go shopping for food with a mask. Just make sure you also wash your hands. Some people say you should even disinfect the groceries. Don't want to transfer the virus from something to your hands, then rub your eyes, nose etc. The hand to face transfer might be more dangerous because you might have more of it on your hands than whatever was or was not in the air. Luckily, it's easily killed by hand sanitizer or soap and water for 20 seconds. It's a scary time to be alive, that's for sure. They can't develop a vaccine fast enough.
