Today’s video we treat a cow that has stones embedded in her hoof. NADIS link for proper treatment of whiteline lesions in cattle: www.nadis.org.uk/disease-a-z/... CONTACT NATE THE HOOF GUY hooftrimmerguy@gmail.com
RU-vid is a weird beast, man. I was bored and looking up acoustic performances from 90s rock bands, one thing led to another, and now I find myself watching bovine podiatry videos and it's absolutely fascinating.
Exactly conservative and the way he does raspberry lesions he leave the most heal possible. Nice gave think with the scientific explanation of the technique
Just rewatched this and I appreciate even more the time and care you take not only to make sure these beefy beautities are well taken care of, but to educate your audience. It also struck me again how painful this must have been for this girl. At one layer the rocks looked like buckshot in her hoof. Thank you for setting her on her path to recovery!
@@NatetheHoofGuy Ich bin kein Hufpfleger.
Ended up here because my 8 yr old asked me about animal hooves and how they worked etc. I'm so fascinated, this is becoming a whole unit for science. Your videos are amazing!
A pressure washer would drive the stones in further damaging the corium even more. A high pressure washer would cut the hoof, destroy the tissue, and force water into blood stream. The opposite of the gentle, do the absolute minimum harm technique Nate uses.
That was my thoughts also when he said people recommend that.. I don't think those people have ever used a pressure washer if they think its a good idea use it on a living animal.
@@swtorjunkie6171 You know inherently someone chooses what pressure it's at, surely you'd get one set between "moves stone from flesh" and "eviscerates flesh"?
@@jorymayer707 another person that hasn't used a pressure washer before 🤣 they're never meant to be used on flesh. 99% of them don't have a pressure adjustment.. They're either on or off. Go to a car wash, get the pressure washer and blast yourself with it and tell us how it goes.
I love the fact that he doesn't have background music. Some may think that the silence is awkward but it actually improves the video since there is no distractions, just the natural sound of things and him talking a lil bit here and there. Love it
yo nate, we gotta tell ya something. we've seen other hoof trimming youtube channels and you really are the most gentle with the girls and we really appreciate and love your work. keep it up, man.
@chatman4998 just because you find the music annoying doesn't take away from the fact that hoofgp is good at his job. His style is just different, and that's okay.
I was wondering the same thing about myself. I actually lose sleep I get so caught up in these vids. It also amazes me that there are so many intriguing jobs out there that I would never have thought of. This one is fantastic.
Here's a man who knows his work!!! I'll never watch any other hoof trimming videos because other guys look like they're pretty rough & work fast & furious! If I owned cows I'd only let Nat fix em up!!! 👍🏻🤗👏🏻
I feel so sorry for these cows. Must really suck having all that pain and not understanding what's happening until it's over. Makes me tear up something fierce
@@celestecornish6943 yes you can tell if a cow is in pain. you work around cows enough you get to know how cows work. depends if the guy watching cares or not
Man. You deserve a lot of bravos for what you do for these animals. I hope the regular people who just go and buy milk from the store see that and also from where that milk comes from. Good job..
I think I read somewhere that cows have a highly developed emotional intelligence. They have a best friends and get sad when separated from them. Makes sense why they are highly revered in some countries, very cool creatures ❤️
@@ashleythaxton9667 cows are straight up not smart. but don't get me wrong cows are still cool, and highly developed emotionally. however in terms of actual intelligence cows are outsmarted by dogs.
Nate…I love watching what you do, especially when you circumvent your knife, always so gently, around the problem area. And then, your wonderful voice makes it even more absorbing…thank you from England! 🙋♀️😁🐄💕
Why is this so relaxing and therapeutic... This is probably a stupid question because I'm sure it's just that you've been educated and trained on it, but how do you know how much hoof you can trim away? You slice away so much so quick, is it just instinctual for you at this point? EDIT: Nevermind, I kept watching and you basically answered this haha
Yes!! Therapeutic is the word I needed!! Why is it so therapeutic?? I'm calling him the "BOSS ROSS OF COW FEET" .. Bahahaha 😂🤣😂.. It's really good to know I'm not alone!
RELAXING????? This is the most anxiety inducing video ever. He keeps cutting closer and closer to the point it hurts. You dont know when that point will come but you know its just 1mm too far and theres the pain. Sure he does a great job but one little mistake and its like ripping fingernails,
@@mabamabam hahaha I did think that the first few I watched, but I settled into trusting his professionalism and enjoyed watching these animals get made better
@@mabamabam that can easily happen, but then that's why you get a professional like this guy. Not Steve from down the road who recently ordered some wood carving tools on Amazon that he's sure will do the job.
It’s satisfying watching you clean everything up but imo, the most satisfying part is knowing these animals aren’t in as much pain and are on their way to recovery
I have a weak stomach, but for some reason, I feel better watching you help these cows. I'm glad you're so caringly treating their foot problems. Thanks for helping them suffer less pain in their lives.
"Why don't you use a pressure washer?" Yeah. A pressure washer. The thing that blasts paint off houses with sheer force of water. Against organic material like a cow's hoof. That will end well...
As kids on the countryside we were dumb enough to cut through boots with it not thinking what would happen to the feet still in the boot.. 7stitch scar and loads of blood 🤕
There are hoof pressure washers that are mostly used for horses. They aren't as powerful as normal pressure washers and they probably wouldn't be as useful on cloven hooves anyway since they could cause irritation between the toes. Farriers do sometimes use them though when they want to clearly see what they are working with before trimming a damaged hoof and can be gentler than a stiff brush with the right setting.
Hi Nate. For all of us lay-people when it comes to hoof maintenance (and you've probably explained this a thousand times so apologies in advance), how on earth do you know when you've cut too deep into the sensitive area? Obviously hooves are like nails on a human with no feeling, but using the human analogy, you eventually get to the quick when it starts to hurt/bleed. How deep is the quick on a cow hoof?
I dont know anything about cows, but i know a lot about nail pains since i bite mine. Once it gets past the white part of the nail it starts hurting, so i'd assume it'd be the same for cows.
You make slicing through that hoof look like soft butter. I tried trimming my horses’ hooves myself once and it took me two days to finish one horse. I leave it to the pros now!
Dang. Really great work. I've got a handful of large animal vets within my family. It's a job for those with big hearts. Thank you brother, you are a special one.
As someone who has never worked around hooved animals, this cleaning process is hard for me to comprehend. I know the nerves arent technically in these parts of the hoof horn. But everytime i see the carving im 😲😲😲 without fail
Yeah, mentally we realize it's just like clipping really thick toenails, but still cringe because instinct says carving tissue/nails = horror movie torture (or something like that at least). It's for healing, like surgery - yet still kinda makes me anxious. 😅👍
The Hoof GP did a video showing him put his hand into a cow's hoof horn (removed from a butchered animal) then apply a blow-torch to the horn. He said it barely even got warm.
Just found this channel, and Mr. Nate is so gentle and thoughtful in his process. I saw another channel just aggressively chopping at a hoof that was severely abscessed. Poor baby would twitch in obvious discomfort, i just couldn't watch. In the field I'm in if a patient is twitching or tensing up they aren't comfortable. This will be my channel from now on. Nate is a true healer. So grateful for humans like him. Go! Mr. Nate Go! You are appreciated for sharing your passion and the wealth of knowledge you provide during your videos!
The issue with an abcess is you need to reach the end of it, or it just won't heal right, whereas with stones, you can just go at it slowly, and do the least damage possible. I agree that fixing an abcess often looks awful though.
I am a city girl that has never even touched a cow. I’ve always loved nature shows like Planet Earth, Monster Bug Wars , and Frozen Planet. So, when I came across this, I was hooked and can’t stop watching.
If I would have not seen your videos I'd have never known such problems exists and guys like you work so hard to give relief to animals. Love u man so much for doing this work. ❤️ Love from India 🇮🇳.
I love watching these videos on Instagram, I don’t even have a cow or a farm I just enjoy watching them and it’s about time I move onto RU-vid to watch these satisfying cleanings!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE… Please give us the pleasure of watching the cows walking happily when it’s all done. That’s the most exciting part. Only a minute or two please.
That had to be painful to walk on ... poor baby ... Great job again Nate! I am in Indiana and would like to ride my bike up to see you. And meet you. You are such a good teacher!
I enjoy Nate's stuff a lot, there's something about his process that is more gentle and careful than other farrier's I've seen with RU-vid channels. Also loved being sniffed at the end lol
Yeah, I've seen other farriers just absolutely hack away at the horn until the lesion is bleeding like crazy. I mean, I'm not a farrier myself so I'm not as knowledgeable, but I thought that only new tissue really bleeds, and the point was to reduce trauma to forming tissue. I found this guy and always thought he does a better job.
@@AccidentallyOnPurpose dude exactly! I find they bs it away saying it isn't live tissue too (even though the cows are shuffling or making distressed sounds) nate is hands down the most careful guy I've seen by far and if he ever does nick the skin he admits to it at least
You are doing a great job looking after these blessed animals created for the purpose of supporting our own existence 🙏 ❤️ 😊 all the milk drinkers from the continent said thank goodness 🎉
This neva gits old. It's amazin' how much of that hoof u cut off. I keep expectn 2 hear tha cow yell but, when yer dunn I then expect tha cow 2 say "ahhhh!"....✌🏽😂❤
I appreciate how you take your time with the treatment, and appreciate as well the farmers who look after their cows so well by providing good hoof care.
I don’t know how these cow podiatry appointments wind up in my recommended, but boy am I glad they did. I’d like to think the cow being treated felt that final stone come out and was probably like “wow this pedicure really hit the spot!”
Why can’t I stop watching these videos!?!? I am recovering from back surgery and having to rest in bed and I am entertained watching these videos. Over and over. Hooked . It’s relaxing to me.
Worst case of “I’ve got a rock in my shoe” ever! I don’t work in a farm, or with animals at all, but I love seeing these videos because of how satisfying it is to know how much relief and care you are bringing to these gentle, amazing animals!
I have no clue how this got added to my recommendations but that was very fascinating to watch. You look like a master of your craft and I'm sure the cow felt so much better after. Also, I think you have fantastic narration, very easy to listen to.
I am thankful for your spray bottle! Having those clean work areas helps me see your knife work. Your explanation of how a small rock causes more problems than larger rocks reminds Mr of how small gravel is dumped over large in order to help lock the gravel in place on a driveway.
I'm glad to know that animal welfare information from the UK is useful! I've worked a bit in agriculture on and off over the past few years and the lack of support from our government to the industry is appalling, with many of cow farms going out of business. I think the government take them for granted. So things like that, as you mentioned make me realise even more how important it is that our government should support us here in the UK, rather than letting businesses go under and the industry suffer. Edit: We tend to use Iodine solution quite a lot here in the UK as an antiseptic. I've just discovered your videos, but I like them! Good stuff
It seems you love your work. I just watched another channel and his style looked like a butchers work. You're treatment looks professional and you're calm voice combined with the simple (to understand) language shows me that you are know what you are doing.
It’s refreshing to see cows being well cared for … They give us so much .. I wish we didn’t depend on them for certain things but it’s a crappy necessity.. Either way I’m grateful for your excellent efforts to care for your or someone’s livestock..
I watch these with the sound off and my toes curl the entire time. I never knew cows needed this done, but I’m glad they have you to give them what looks like much needed relief
Heck, I am a fan of the Hoof GP already, and if this wasn‘t enough, I like the way how this man here works - great, sensitive craftsmanship, well explained. Complements over the pond!
@@atrane365 give some of his videos a try. Hes actually a super genuine person and down to earth. It's never clickbait, and always shows exactly as promised 😊
I swear it looks like you’re peeling a potato. This is Pretty cool stuff man. Glad to see the level of care you provide to these beautiful and essential creatures.
I can appreciate your technique in going slowly and only removing what you must to get at the problem without going too deep. the Hoof GP does this almost exactly the same way.
Best channel, straight to business, no music no distraction and your voice is lovely, your explanations very clear and I’ve been watching before sleep for a few days now, works like a charm lol Thanks for teaching us!
Who would have thought Who'd have thought Who'd've thought But never who would *of* thought. This is what results from knowing the sound of the words and not being taught the words themselves. 🤷🏻♂️
@@bvbinsane1vanity school is lame. I did all my schooling in Vietnam and I turned out ok. Those little Viet villages didn't turn out so good. Potato tomato as they say.
You took the words out of my. Each cut revealed more tiny stones. Nature has done an amazing job really. Evolution has provided us the ability to help this planets creatures.
