Changing the diet of cows might help them release less methane.

There are around 1.5 billion cows on the planet being raised as livestock for things like meat and dairy - and they’re a climate problem we’ve struggled to solve. Cows have a specialized digestive tract that allows them to digest tough plant material like grass or hay, but in that process, methane is produced as waste, and the cows ... burp it out. Methane is a greenhouse gas that’s nearly 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, these burping animals are considered one of the largest sources of methane production in the United States, making up nearly 25 percent of all methane emissions.
You’ve likely heard of a few solutions to this. The loudest one is probably the campaign to get people to cut their beef intake or switch to meat alternatives. It’s an important solution, but people are often reluctant to do it. So instead, some scientists are taking the attention off humans and focusing on the diet of the cows. What they’ve found is that certain additives in cow feed can help reduce methane emissions, and recent work has drawn a lot of attention to one unexpected hero: seaweed.

So... you might be wondering how we found out about seaweed as cow feed. It started in Canada when a farmer found that seaweed actually increased milk production as well as reproduction in dairy cows. After some research, he found that the seaweed also made them less gassy. Australian researchers started using different types of seaweed until they discovered that, in lab studies, the red seaweed Asparagopsis was hypereffective at reducing methane.

This isn't about reducing Co2 emissions, so it makes perfect sense. If people want to reduce carbon emissions, one of the best ways to do so is to significantly cut down on meat. This is an attempt to keep doing a harmful thing because you'll be able to feel _slightly_ better about it. Like if you want to keep driving your car as much as you want, so you get an elctric car because they're (slightly) better for the environment.

People who were lactose intolerant literally had less chance of reproduction for thousands of years. Lactose tolerance evolved FAST, that's how much of a difference it makes. One might argue that being a lactose intolerant man decreases your mating chances even today simply because women (on average) don't like men with constant stinky farts, and they don't like picky eaters.😂

Multifaceted answer: first of all: you know the delta sponsorship is harming your brand... Then there is so much complexity around the ethics of the algae. I did four presentations in my plant biotech degree about it and was in a founding team of a start up trying to grow it. The main things I am unsure about is A is this just something people are supporting to avoid the hard things. I looked at the companies investing in this and it is big dairies so they want to save their business even if it's bad on so many levels (feed intake, exploiting and killing complex mammals, land use, zoonosis, still high CO2 emissions a.o.), B where does the bromine go after it's done its job: atmosphere? (Would be bad because bromoform is a ozone depleting gas), the products? (Would be bad for human and animal health) or excrements? (Would be bad because we are spreading bromine on our fields where it doesn't belong.

Individual actions can't affect systemic problems, this is true no matter how you slice it. Delta is asking consumers to not change anything about their diets and asserting that technology will solve all the problems of climate change before it becomes a problem, which has and never will be true, but the problem isn't consumers its the systems that perpetuate the emissions. Letting companies decide when to stop polluting is just helping them pollute more, walmart isn't gonna stop stocking plastic bags when consumers stop buying them, they'll just continue to use the cheapest option because its the cheapest option and people need bags either way. What does stop companies from stocking plastic bags is systemic action to force them to stop, government regulation. If you want to effect change in your community, join and vote in your local council because thats the only way you're gonna see local change.

Why not tackle the problems directly by not breeding billions of land animals into existence in the first places if there are viable alternatives for protein, vitamins and minerals? The proposition of fixing emissions from the animal farming industry seems like running away from the problem and trying to fix a cracked wall with a band-aid. Eat less meat, more plant-based products and let do lab grown meat do it’s thing if people want to eat something that corresponds 1-to-1 to meat from animals.
