Coyote attacks unleashed pet dog 

I think that submissive pose is normal for when an animal decides to go on the offensive. Ears back, eyes mostly closed, appendages protected. Maybe attacking is a scary proposition!

Also, I know very well "the balls" that coyotes have on them and what they can and can't do. They are all over the damn place where I live and I encounter them all the time. A coyote against a dog twice its size that is also willing to fight, stands absolutely ZERO chance. Any coyote trying for a dog twice its size is either rabid, starving to death, or extremely young and inexperienced.

the yoties where I live can get to 80ish pounds and definitely are meaner and smarter then dogs but you really don't have a point unless your trying to have sympathy to something that would kill you if it had a chance. + you must have never see a coyote playing smart and luring a dog in so its four or five buddy's in the treeline can ambush a dog thats stupid enough to follow it

Or it was being a very smart animal and luring his prey to the rest of his pack. Coyote's are smart and dangerous. They should absolutely not be taken as something that is sacred or should be left alone. They're a danger to livestock, deer (which are endangered as it is), domestic dogs and cats and sometimes even small children.

:D Good question! It was a Canon HG10 that was 1440x1080 with assymetrical pixels, so it fills a 1080 window. Also used a Canon 1.8x extender lens. Thought it was high tech at the time :-)

Sonny Galindo well no and yes. That is just a regular adult Eastern Coyote, but Eastern (Grey) Coyotes all have a good amount of wolf left in their dna, much more than normal Western Coyotes. They shouldn’t even really be considered Coyotes because they are typically double the size of your stereotypical Western Coyote. The East has fox which are the same size as Western Coyotes. Luckily we don’t have cougars though

I think you are looking at the typical threat display, coyotes and wolves both do it, the hunched back, hackles up, the idea is to look as big as possible, scare off the threat.

Yotes do this often when being aggressive or scared(many ppl seem to be misunderstanding the close connection between fear/aggression). Head low, teeth bared, back arched, rocking their head from side to side. Behavior of Coyotes, Wolves, & domesticated Dogs are radically different in many ways. Though it's the similarities we tend to notice.

That is not true. Wild dogs tuck their tails like that to protect their genitals. You should check out african wild dogs vs hyenas. However domesticated dogs do as you describe. The same can be said about wild cats vs domesticated cats. Wild cats hide their tails when hunting. Domesticated cats flails it like dogs.

That's an aggressive posture. By arching has back, baring his teeth and tucking his tail, he was telling the dog not to mess with him. Looks like it worked too. As far as people worried about the limp. The coyote was probably fine. It didn't look too bad and get hurt all the time. An old coyote is a beat up coyote.

+canadablake It's very defensive posturing. Tucking tail is not an attack posture, it's defensive. May be weak from not eating due to the paw. Also looks like it has mange, which can weaken and even kill animals.

Teresa Gallagher Please explain to me the difference between an aggressive coyote posture, a defensive coyote posture, and an attack posture. I'll give you a hint. the last two don't exist. That coyote didn't seem particularly threatened by the dog. The interaction was formal, and it was clearly the coyotes game. The dog just wanted to have a butt sniff and the coyote said no. Also, while the submissive posture may look similar, it's accompanied by retreat, not advance and a threat gape. And I don't think it's mange. Full hair on the tail and back legs, and that's the first noticeable sign we would see. So the only way you would be able to determine mange on this particular coyote would by checking it's belly between it's back legs to see if it's pink and raw.

I completely agree! Coyotes are beautiful, intelligent and highly social animals. It's a shame they are so demonised and misunderstood.. Humans are scared of what they don't understand.

The coyote doesn't comprehend the difference between a pet and any other prey. To them, it is just what they need to survive another day. Yet, humans make them the villain for doing what they were designed to do, rather than admitting it was their own fault. It's sad. I have cats and they stay indoors because we have a lot of coyotes and other predators in the area. This was all staged. They know each other and have it in an enclosed fenced in area. It knows there is no way out or it would run off! Coyotes are NOT aggressive. It has already had it's paw attacked. They did this all to make a film.

Baloney. The dog did not attack the coyote. Clearly, it was just curious. The coyote charged the dog. People should not let their dogs off leash in the park. Also, there is no place for a coyote in a park where people and dogs are walking. An injured coyote is dangerous. Animal Control should retrieve it and put it down before it attacks a child. Coyotes in urban areas will escalate their aggression as their numbers increase and their fear decreases. It's so predictable scientists have even drawn up a table of the escalating steps. In my area coyotes are a threat to pets and young livestock. I never saw coyotes or raccoons here when I was a kid. Now they are everywhere. This is what happens when "cute animals" are taken as pets and then released when the owners can't handle them, and when predator populations are not managed intelligently.

Where I live does not make any difference. I have lived in both rural and urban neighborhoods. The only place a dog should be allowed off a leash is on your own property. Beyond that, the owner needs to be responsible and leash their animal. Period.

They will kill anything that is either smaller then them, or not able to defend themselves. A hungry coyote won't think twice before pouncing on a little kid playing in the yard. A group of them would probably attempt to attack a grown man. I've seen coyotes ruthlessly attack deer, and squirrels and not even eat them. I've been told by multiple people that large packs will attack cows, and literally torture them before killing them. ***** Hey Cody. There are signs everywhere saying dogs must be on leashes. We have official dog parks in Dallas and this isn't one. It is called Harry Moss "native area." There is a large native prairie and woodland hiking trails. Its a large park (~200 acres) but with nearby residents disregarding the ordinances, letting their dogs run loose, kids, bikers and naturalists avoid the place. Both of my nieces hate it because of this problem. I almost got bit by an unleashed russian wolfhound last week while riding a mountain bike. Definitely NOT a dog park. OfficialVanDyce got it right. Coyotes act the same when not wounded. Shoot them if you see them. They will attack you given the chance. Never let them get the confidence. They just killed an 18 year old girl not too long ago.

But no I still love having my 90lb long hair black German Shepherd off leash, but I do it with common sense. I let her loose hiking in the CO mountains with me and she stays right next to me. I don't let her loose next to a busy road. I'm more worried about stupid humans than my dog, they're more unpredictable and dangerous.

Being a RU-vid creator, I know exactly how much power a thumbnail/title combo can have, so I understand completely where you are coming from; it's very frustrating to have a great video but nobody watches it because you aren't using clickbait. People don't really care much about the video though if they aren't getting what they are expecting. I too have had videos stagnant for 2 years, then changed the title and thumbnail and all of a sudden BOOM! Your thumbnail is just fine, perfect actually.. It's an actual clip of the video and it's the best possible thumbnail you can get without making a fake one (which would make more people mad). You can change the title to something like "Coyote vs Pet Dog CLOSE CALL (NEARLY Attacked!)" The capitalized words do help draw attention in videos like this, and I think people would still watch a video where someone is in danger - a lot of people just like to get scared, they don't want to see an animal rip a part another animal. I've seen many extremely violent animals attack videos on RU-vid, and they all have thumbs down just because of how graphic they are. Your video is something rare; it's like that video of that Bald Eagle that landed on that ladies porch just 5 feet away. Just personally, I like seeing animals in their natural environment. When I clicked your video, I wasn't expecting the coyote to rip the dogs leg off (nor did I want to see that), but I was expecting them to maybe stand on their hind legs and wrestle a little bit - to me, a nip at the leg was hardly an attack, even though it does fit the definition. I'm just rambling now - overall I loved the video, just felt a little mislead. Not saying you have to change your title either, just food for thought. The title might bring in more views, but it brings in negative views, which has adverse effects on your channel if you are trying to build. If you are just trying to milk views and don't really want to invest time in building a channel, I completely understand that too - and I'd advise to keep the title the same, because clearly it's working ;)

@@NickMirro Yes. The body language of the coyote are submissive gestures... The coyote was old to begin with, plus being injured. The dogs.....not understanding the submissive gestures reacted as you saw. So.....this definitely was not a case of a coyote attacking pet dogs. Although.....that does happen. Coyotes look at small breed dogs and puppies as a food source. In my neighborhood just last summer a pack of three coyotes took a Jack Russel Terrier that was being walked on a leash by a retired couple. We have examples of alligators getting dogs, hawks and eagles taking dogs, and coyotes taking dogs. But this is not the case here. Thank you for posting though!!! I hope I wasn't too harsh in my criticism........I actually enjoyed watching the video!

Where do you people come up with we encroached on their habitat? They follow human populations as we tend to remove the predators of the coyotes. Most places in the USA never had coyotes until early to early mid 1900's.

Gavin: Coyotes are native to my region. Most development is on land that was indeed coyote habitat.

You think. I live in as area where we see coyotes , and hear them. My cat, that I don't leave out. Outdoor cats are hit by cars and killed by dogs. She was missing for 2 months, and our animal control called me that she had a frightened cat that had been hit by a cat,( she only had a road burn). She was fine. My other neighbor lets her white cat out, and he disappears for weeks. It's sad that coyotes get blamed. They may kill cats on rare occasions, but little dogs are the only pets at risk. Little dogs can dig under fences, get hit by cars, are targeted by birds of prey and other dogs. Leave wildlife be. We are such a destructive species that they barely have a chance, and peoples stupid phobias are destroying innocents.

sometimes dogs have a purpose and can't so much if on a leash. the dogs were scoping out the area and so found an injured coyote which the dog owner could of helped out the coyote if he had the right abilities. or he could of killed it and ate it and let it die honorably in a fight to the death with the dogs.

Yeah, but sometimes it's for the dogs protection, so they don't run off and get hurt. If the area was fenced it would be a bit safer for the dog to just roam. I just know how dumb people in the cities can be and let their dogs off the leash outside in an unfenced area and then get surprised they ran away, got run over, or hurt someone. Not all but just too many to make me feel this way. Ha.

There is nothing good about having a coyote around! Buddies dog was outside Chesapeake male, pack of yotes came in and killed the 95 lb male. I say shoot as many as you can because you’ll never kill all of them. Also most states have open season year round on them.

@@briand7868 I live out in the country in Kansas and I know the general area of a pack of 20 yotes about a mile away (My dog & I ran into them in the forest around 4:50am 2 years ago watching the sun come up) however it still baffles me when people at night will leave their dog in the backyard hours on end. I have seen curious adolescent yotes run across my neighborhood street almost looking to see what it could bait into the forest.

There is a horse rescue near here where the owner stopped riding her horses in the winter because sick locals like you were running coyotes over with snowmobiles on purpose on her property. We went out and dug trenches that would wreck snowmobiles. It worked.. the killers lost a couple of snowmobiles, and one got a broken nose.

Interesting point. I'm sure they look pretty hideous when attacking an animal you are caring for. Even squirrels seem vile when they are tearing the bark off of a Japanese maple. Outside of that, coys remind me of jackals. At least to me a jackal looks good even though it is an insult to be called one :-)

Had the dogs pursued it, he would have led them right to the waiting pack and they would have had house dog for lunch. Milspecmachine I was going to say the same thing about the limp. even our dogs will hitch up like that on occasion. Interesting to see people who have no fieldcraft speaking out on this. We have a bunch of Coyote/mountain lion here in hills of Woodside California. Coyotes are effed up animals they'll trick and and even "befriend" dogs and "con" them into coming out of the yard so they can eat em. They'll attack dogs on leashes if they think they can get away with it as well. They do keep the deer population down a bit but they are a bit out of control now because the liberals won't allow hunting up here. I guess they'd rather have deer, coyote mountain lions die of disease, inbreeding and getting hammered by cars and motorcycles. People who don't understand wild life except to think it is cute and pretty tend to do a bunch more harm than good. Kind of sad to see deer with deformities living longer than they normally would or coyote getting tagged by a car, injured and unable to hunt who then comes around homes hurting pets. all could be fix with proper control and balance.

Marie Peterson Marie... They are very small animals. A average human male should EASILY be able to take on a coyote. We don't have claws or insane strength, but I know for a fact I could crush a coyotes legs or neck. And how is it supposed to jump six feet in the air and get my neck? It's possible it could kill me if it got lucky, or if I was drunk, but if I was aware I was under attack and not sleeping or something, I can't imagine it would, it is literally 1/9MIN-1/6MAX of my size.

That's what I thought. It is way bigger and broader than the coyote's we have here in Western Washington. There are no wolves here for the coyote's to interbreed with.

Must be pretty cold where you live! It's a rough life for those critters. I think i read somewhere they need about 2 1/2 lbs of food a day when it's cold. And if they don't get, well eventually they freeze to death on top of hay bales.

@@BigShaneGillis Since it's in Texas, it's definitely not an Eastern Coyote (Canis latrans var.). It's also probably not a red wolf, although they _were_ native to Texas they're only found in captivity within Texas at the time the video was uploaded. It's probably not a Mexican wolf, there's only ~250 of them in the US, in the wild. Texas Parks and Wildlife notes that wolves are currently extirpated from Texas, so I wouldn't expect a recent wolf x coyote hybrid. I would anticipate that it's a Plains Coyote (C. l. latrans) or Southeastern Coyote (C. l. frustor.) given that they're two of the larger subspecies of coyotes and are found in Texas currently. There's a similarly named Texas Plains Coyote, but they're smaller than the Plains Coyote.

...And what kind of pet owner stands around filming a scenario which could've ended in their dog's death? Coyotes can take down mature white tailed buck, but the owner thinks his dog is safe because it's large. Not so at all. And yeah, it's cruel to set your animal loose on another wounded animal.

actually a coyote by itself cannot take down a matured white tail buck. If the buck was sick or injured maybe its possible. otherwise a coyote needs a pack. Just though you should know i see coyotes even packs get bullied by white tails more often than the other way around. (mostly during rut)

+Yamikoto yes; destroy any coyote you have access to. They are varmints and of no value. they work in packs and will kill your family pets and small goats, etc.

I don't agree with the idea of destroying a balancing element of nature, such as the effective predator that is the coyote. I only say do not interact with them when you have an encounter with them in the wild, try to be safe with yourself and your family, and be a responsible owner of your dog, cat, or farm animals. There are better options than coyote genocide... And I say this after losing half my flock of chickens as well as my cat to wild coyotes. The loss of the cat was my fault, not theirs...

lol. faking and injured leg. stupidity. coyotes hate being out in open. and laying there with three strange dogs coming at it, i'd say poor situational assessment.
