Just finished the light upgrade to our 2016 Rubicon. Used stock wheels on an AEV carrier so I kept the top center light and added four LED's. It looks great!!! I got the metal dust shields from amazon and it worked great with the same LED's and connectors. Had two people follow me to see how it worked :)
I have to say as a first time Jeep owner loved your videos. They were very simple and easy to follow. I am ordering my front and rear bumpers thanks to your video..
I did use one waterproof connection. I removed the original connector and replaced it with the waterproof one. All of the smaller splices from the LEDs themselves I just soldered and shrank wrapped.
What is the measured diameter of the dust cover, and what size wheels are you running? I noticed my 17" Rubi wheels have a 15" inner diameter. I want to run LED's to the very edge to light up the 5 wholes near the wheel lip, as well as the bigger whole, totaling 10 LED's. I see it looks like you have an inch of extra space between wheel and dust cover. Great video, you've inspired me to tackle this.
I've done exactly what you did except I couldn't sader the wires but when I tried to tap into the wires like you did they didn't go on and ive tried so many combinations
Great video, it came up on my feed, and quickly subbed. I saw the light console you have, and I wanted to know where you purchased it, and how it was connected. I have a 2014 JK, and I am starting my upgrade journey. None the less, Thank you for your video's, it helps us newbie's learn. "Each one Teach one". Just curious, what battery do you use, and how much mileage does your rig have now. Not to be winded, just appreciative.
Hey this video is great and much appreciated. I tried doing the same thing but I can't get all the lights to work, I currently have 6 out of the 8 working. Any thoughts on what could be wrong??
My best advice is to try applying 12v power directly to the lights that are not working to see if they work alone. If they don't, they they may simply be bad lights. Make sure you double check polarity. If they don't work one way, reverse the positive and negative to see if that makes a difference. LEDs will only light with correct polarity.
Very cool. fyi for future people doing this for 8 equal parts, just cross perpendicular through the center top bottom, then 90 degrees to that through the center...then diagonally again through the center left top to bottom right and then bottom left to top right. Simple geometry if you think about it. :)
Yes. Very simple geometry but some folks may find it more challenging to achieve perfect 90 and 45 degree angles especially with the center hole. Regardless, I picked a method to share that would work with any configuration of equally spaced lights... The method is the same if you have 8 lights or 5. The geometry method doesn't transfer so easily to a 5 light pattern. ;-)
First, thanks for the inspiration, I have used this to setup my brake light the same way! Have you run into any legal issues with this? I can't seem to find that it is a violation of state DOT but not sure if it is a violation of Federal DOT third brake light laws. Thanks for any comments you can provide and keep the videos coming.
+Ryan Tiebout technically it is not DOT compliant...although arguably better than the DOT intended. What makes the difference is that DOT has a continuous illuminated surface area requirement that isn't met with the individual LEDS...but then again...they never expected someone to throw out 8 LEDs! I have never had any problems, but since you asked I thought I would let you know.
+OVERCLOCK3D - JKU Thank you very much for the reply and the information. I see so many people with larger tires that have no 3rd brake light at all so I would imagine this to be more legal than their no third brake light. With the factory wheels I only have 5 LED's. I just didn't like the factory third brake light and it obstructing my view. I'll run with this setup for a while and if I have problem's i'll have to come up with some other setup. Thanks again.
What is the situation with the blinkers. I tried running a third break light once and it made the blinker not work and the break light never turned off
Dude I was just in your area.. We ate at the Boat Yard bar and grill on 4th eh. I just ordered a bumper with tire carrier on Amazon by Tuff Stuff.. Lets see how that goes, but l will check the carrier core and post for burrs eh. Where did you get the LED 3rd break lights from? By the way I'm in Lynchburg va.
you should've or could've used the stock 3rd brake light harness and kept from having to run a lot of wiring. Just what i was thinking of, but either way im going to do this to mine
+Mud-Junkie34 That's definitely an option if it works for you. I didn't want to pull my factory harness out of the tailgate, in case I changed lighting options in the future. And since I didn't have a factory-style plug to plug into it...I would have to cut that plug off...and I didn't want to do that either. If it works for you, though, go for it!
+OVERCLOCK3D - CPO now that you mention it, it doesn't sound like a good idea to chop it up. Haha. On the other note what gauge wiring did you solder to the big bundle of wires & where did you ground your lights?
No. These are single "element" LEDs... so they can only be wired as brake lights or running lights....but not both. Otherwise, they would just always be on, and wouldnt work as brake lights.
Any reason why you didn't bother LEDing the factory tail lights? If you get red LED (not white bulb) for those tail lights it would be even more sick!! I also think this mod is so good you should find a way to sell a lot.
+ZombieconJK It's a just a braided sheathing, you can find at Amazon or other places. Here is an example. www.amazon.com/Techflex-Expandable-Sleeving-ft-Black/dp/B004GE16MC/
When you cut a pizza in 8 slices, do you calculate the circumference? Just cut it in half and half again and so forth; no mental math required Chief.... Great concept and execution and that's what counts...
math ensures equal spacing. better to take an extra minute or two and do it right compared to just "eyeballing" it. I know what you mean though, seems like extra work
Just an additional idea. I added these flasher modules to my third brake lights and my trailers. www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/strobe-controllers/brake-light-strobe-module/195/ Strobe module rapidly flashes bulbs 4 times for 0.4 seconds, slowly 4 times for 2.6 seconds, and then lights remain on bright until brake pedal is released. They pop on with the brake and really alert the driver behind by getting their attention. There is a video on the page in the link. Nice spare tire mod!
Dr. Mark in Texas I really like that. those were very popular with the motorcycle crowd...but don't see them mufh outside of that. I've seen some newer public safety vehicles with them recently.
I would be careful about moving the license plate as you get the wrong cop out there and he will ticket you for not having the light on the license plate.
