I stopped using snares a long time ago. Last time I used a snare on one rod and the folding trap on the other we got 1 keeper on the snare and 12 with the folding.

I grew up fishing and crabbing off those exact same rocks for the last 35+ years. My aunt and uncle used to own two of the houses right above where you were. I love that place.

Snares are just as effective if not more as those crab hawks, the only drawback to them is you can’t pump that rod. Each time you pump that rod you’re creating slack which opens up the snares. It has to be a slow steady retrieve with no pumping. The key is to always have tension on that line. The other thing is if the snare starts riding a wave reel faster your line will tell you how fast to retrieve, reel until you see no belly on the line just straight tension. There’s definitely a learning curve but if you put the effort into them you can cast them where those hawks can’t be casted which is into that small channel or bay way out where all the crabbers set their pots, that’s where the crab are always at unless tide is pulling.

Oh man. That's rough and I know exactly how you feel. There are days where all the crabs are just shy of being a keeper. One trick that has really help (if it's possible around your location) is to move around. My rule of thumb is now moving about 20 steps away if I skunk 3 consecutive times. A pain in the butt moving all the equipments around but well worth it once that keeper comes on. Best of luck next time.

Don’t let the rod tip go slack. That’s when the snares can loosen and drop crab. Pull and keep a bend on the rod like when you reel in a salmon.

I’ve been more successful in that spot with the clam shell traps. I’ve also lost a few snares and clam shell traps there 😂 Thanks for the video and for the info on how to fish for the tasty crabs 🦀
