I did make the jump and loved it! Just like you I was told to gradually go up the ladder by other audiopholes. When I asked some of them why waste time and money doing upgrades,they had no proper answer. From an Ortofon Red, I went to a Benz Ruby 3 Microridge and an EAR Phono Box. You made the right move.

Still lovin the content man! My personal "jump" was huge: I got the chance tot start my turntable experience by buying the demo Michell Gyro SE from my dealer that included a DynaVector Karat 17D3 on a tecnoarm (at an amazing bargain price). Although that was 10 years ago, to this day I never felt the need to upgrade/change my system. Anyway, keep this channel rockin'! Horns up from the Netherlands.

Some people think there should be steps to getting the ultimate. It is about what you want and can afford, nothing less. Why wait? There is a Hana cartridge called a Blue that is supposed to be really good. My boss sells these at his shop. His advice has always been spot on. He knows how persnickety I am when it comes to my system. Hana has it going on! I believe in this company too!
@kriswhitman8027
@kriswhitman8027 Год назад
I agree you should make the giant leap if you can afford it. Who wants to climb the ladder, spending more money each time, to get to where you want to be if you can skip the middle and jump right to where you want to be. In the end you save money by going for it in one leap. I just did. I upgraded my entire analog front end from a cheap plastic technics turntable with inexpensive AT MM cartridge to a Dr. Feickert Volare with Hana ML cartridge. My phono preamp went from a very inexpensive Project MM only to a Sutherland TZ Vibe transimpedance phono stage. So I jumped from an analog front end which cost around $350 (many years ago I admit) to $6600. So I totally think you should do it in one step if you can afford to do it. Thanks for the video. As I type this I am waiting on the delivery of the setup described above...I can't wait.

I’m all for making giant leaps in my second purchases; if I’m testing the waters to see if I really want to go there (like a DAC/streamer/turntable/headphones), I go relatively cheaply. Once I’m sure, I go for the best that I can afford (notice I didn’t just say “the best”) or actually stretch a little bit further if there’s not that much a difference in price. It’s cheaper in the long run if you get what you really think you want first, instead of buying/selling at a loss/upgrading/selling at a loss/buying again. Would also suggest that if you have to put it on a credit card because you can’t buy it outright, save up the money first.

The only questions I ever ask myself regarding upgrades is am I happy with what my current setup is? Will this upgrade help me make for an even better experience with my current setup? Am I prepared for the possibility that this upgrade may reveal limitations of other components that will then in theory lead me to wanting more from other components that I may not be able to afford? Should I refinance my house and get into some of those Wilson Audio towers that Henry Rollins has? Then I usually get stoned and eat some chocolate cake.

So last year, I did a similar large upgrade. I went from an AT95E to an ATVM95SH, after repeated back to back listens to the Shibata and the Micro-Line stylus. I have a heavily modified Rega turntable so felt the underlying hardware justified the leap. I had it professionally set up and wow, its like night and day. I'm pulling out vinyl just to hear the shibata needle play them, it has literally transformed the sound and further heightened the vinyl experience. Again, at the price point, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better all-rounder, though I strongly recommend auditioning both the SH & ML if you can.

Making a larger than incremental jump is fine if you have a good idea of what you’re looking for. I would personally make one jump at a time, just so I could become familiar with the improvement I made, then change another variable the next month.

Oh man, I've been wanting to get ears on this! I've heard the Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC Star, which I was very impressed with. Normally that's enough to put me on the path. But the constant positive reviews on this have kept me curious, and the price being a little less than the SS certainly doesn't hurt either. The design just seems really smart on the ML though. I'll be excited to hear your thoughts on this one. *edit: just saw your bit about having the MP-150 too. Even better because I used to have that cart, so I'll have a more relatable baseline. I also totally agree with making BIG jumps in gear. If you go up slowly, I think you're more likely to have buyers remorse because it's not *that* different from what you already had.

Can’t wait to hear your take ;). I have the “MH” on my Rega P8, just a very small amount of listening told me is absolutely sings with my Moon 110LP V2. On the note of upgrades I went from a sub 1k table with cart to a 4K table with cart and separate phono amp. So I am terrible example of taking small bites. While I admire those who do this, once I heard the potential in vinyl I decided to go all in. While I will still upgrade the Phono Stage at some point this table will be with me quite some time. You should review the Moon 110LP V2 as like the Hana, nothing can touch it at its price point. Happy listening my friend!!

I'm glad you've moved to some kind of micro line/line contact cartridge. Overall you're going to find they're far more detailed than the elliptical cartridge you've been using. Most track well, but because of the small profile surface noise is generally more apparent on records that haven't been cleaned well. Now an ultrasonic cleaner becomes an imperative.

To go big, or stay small? . . . I think we all struggle with this question. For me it comes down to how much of myself I’m willing to invest in the project. I recently real Paul’s (PS Audio) advice to go either digital (DAC) or analog (turntable). I’m not sure yet which I like better, so I dropped money on a preamp. If I decide to go analog, I would be willing to sink $2,500 on a phono stage (but not $4,000 or $8,000); if I decide to go digital, I’ll sink $1,300 to $2,500 on a DAC. But since things are changing so fast on the digital end, some wise heads counsel holding off on big expenditures for DACs because of the improvements coming down the line. I think the best case for going slow is that, that as an audiophile, you are not only exploring the medium (music), and the gear, you’re exploring yourself as well. Take your time, enjoy the journey, it isn’t all about the destination. 🙂

I can only imagine that someone would give advice to improve quality gradually, because for someone new to it all, it would be easy to throw a lot of money at all the wrong things, before you really understand what you are doing. However, If someone has taken the time to educate themselves and they know what they want and why... They should go for it. I had the Schiit Mani. After watching one of your videos, I started considering a switch to the iFi Zen... Then I discovered the iFi Black label and started to feel that the zen would be a sideways move. I got the black label, and it transformed my system. I still smile every time I play a record and marvel at what that thing can do. Cartridge is my weak link also and the Hana ML seemed to be emerging as a good candidate. "punching above it's weight" is pretty much my yardstick for gear decisions... trying to achieve that hifi performance on a midfi budget.

I agree with you, if you can afford the jump, go for it. While this is not a perfect analogy (more a brag really😅), I went from a $300 cart to a vintage one (well, a couple in fact) that would retail for thousands today if they were still available (Grace Level II) and I do NOT regret it, the improvement was astounding. BTW, they cost me (2nd hand) far less than what I suggested they would cost now, in fact less than the cheaper one I mentioned. They were both a great score.....sometimes you can just be plain lucky.

I'm awaiting my fist Ortofon 2m red. It should be a step or two up for my current stylus (cartridge and headshell) without spending a ton of money. The only reason, as I can see, for taking smaller steps would be 'drastically improving my stylus would require making some other system upgrades and by the time my upgrades warranted said stylus it may be time to place that very stylus'. I had to come up with something haha. But you're absolutely right, why walk through two feet of sewage if you can jump over it...? I love your videos, keep 'em comin'.

I really enjoy your channel and have learned some neat things from it! Your photography is also excellent. And, you turned me onto Mofi! But, Muck Fichigan! (Ha, at least they made it out of the first round... so, good luck to you guys as much as it pains me to write that. :D) With regard to the question you pose, should you just make the leap or build up? About 5 years ago, I went from $200 Klipsch computer speakers, to speakers that cost 4k. The difference, was absolutely huge! I learned what soundstage, and imaging, and detail were because of that upgrade. I listened to music more than I ever had before. And I found myself listening to songs I knew so well, and being flabbergasted at how different these songs I knew were. Everything sounded so good, and new, and so much better. Then last year, I dropped 10k on new speakers. But this time, there was good and bad. The good, was that the imaging and sound stage improved even more. These speakers now sort of envelop you into the environment the music is recorded in. And I can absolutely find the instrument or singer in the soundstage. Instruments and vocals are even more accurate. And the bad, is that instruments and vocals are even more accurate. Singers who were perfect, angelic, now sound, human. You can hear their lips open and close, their breathing, the accidental drum or string hit. It was jarring at first to hear, SO much detail, to having the singer feet from me in my living room. So yes, I do think that people should make a jump. But realize, at least IMO, you only get that one jump. Everything else is incremental, and, you almost have to listen more to the differences, rather than enjoying the music. I'm using my dad's pioneer PL-10 (I think) turntable with an AT-95 cartridge ($30). And I think I'm enjoying vinyl with that because, it isn't so hot, but, it's SO MUCH fun to listen to. I own less than 30 albums. And, I might buy the VPI Super Sprout - 4k - to make that one jump. ( as stupid as that is... ) But in your case, you already had a cartridge that was $300? So moving to $1,200 - I'm curious to hear what you think of it. And then ROI wise, if you went to a 10k cartridge after this one, is it REALLY that much better? Anyway - I really like your channel! And I'm excited to hear what you have coming up review wise and what you think of the differences between the cartridges.
@thevinylattack
@thevinylattack 3 года назад
There's a lot to unpack here, but I think you're probably right. Now that I've jumped from a $350 to a $1200, the upgrades won't be so black and white. Of course, for the money, they'll pretty much all have to be incremental now. Happy to bleed Maize and Blue!

the cynic in me, as well as my years of experience in sales and marketing makes me think they tell you not to make such big jumps because they are conditioned to want to sell you gear incrementally, the more gear they sell you over time, the more sales they make overall, and if you skip steps they lose a few sales along the line. As well as profit margins maybe being better in the lower price brackets. But I definitely could be wrong about that, I just don't see how in this case "bigger isn't better".

Looks great. I'll be curious to hear what you think about it after the break-in period. I have 8-9 different carts, each in it's own headshell, but I mostly only use 4 of them. The Stanton 680EEE that came on my used SL-1200, the Shure M97XE, which I like for older, not so perfect records, the Nagaoka MP110, which I also really like but find it's output to be just a little too hot for my phono preamp (MoFi StudioPhono), and my most recent, and favorite, a 35 year old AT130E, which I recently fitted with a new AT VMN40ML. The AT microline stylus really takes things to the next level. I'd say the bass is slightly subdued, in comparison to the Nagaoka, but it's very well balanced and the detail it extracts is amazing. Also, IGD is negligible, even on long records.

I hope when you review this cartridge you won't spare the truth if it turns out you are not impressed of its sound compared to your much less expense current cartridge. I have real respect for your insight and honesty and since I am seriously considering buying this cartridge, it will hinge in part on your review. There is too much self delusion in the audiophile world to justify the expense of some of this stuff. While quality counts in all areas, things seems to have gone overboard in too many instances. I am a current Ortofon Red owner and love it having bought it after taking my $600 AT MC cartridge to show off to a Red owner. To my surprise his cartridge bested my 5x more expensive one in almost every parameter. But I've heard so many good things about the Hana I'd get one if it does in fact sound that much better as has been claimed in many other reviews. I'm never going to spend $2K to $3k or more on a cartridge but I hear the Hana gets one in that class for $1,200, which I will spend if it does indeed easily and obviously surpass the sub $500 cartridges. Your review will put me over the hump if you find it is in fact a cartridge that surpasses your current model.

What happens during the run-in-time? Can you help explain? I can only think this cartridge is only an object, with out feeling, soul or talent; 🤔does the music, magically gets trap in the cartridge and John Bonham’s bass drum adds to music that needs more bottom beat. Beth Hart voice help a weaker vocalist get the yayas out?🙃 or would the frequency response get better go over or under as it wears in or after 40 hours the dates over no more magic you have heard it all🙀can’t wait for your review on the Hana ⏳have fun that the best part👍 Will a fine line stylus wear the groove out more or less than a elliptical ?💎🔬

As the cart runs in, things settle into place and the sound becomes more stable for lack of a better term. While I have no proof, I'd think a fine line stylus would wear out a record less than an elliptical because of its better fit in the groove.

As we think about in your case the Hana it does not have artificial intelligence so how could it get better It sounds like a great cartridge and I would bet it does sound amazing For the stylus I always thought the groove is cut with the groove tool, made to create the music, at all it worth, to make the best listening experience to our ears.
