I tried this approach with an avoidant, and it doesn't work. I gave her plenty of space,. When she cancelled a date or told me to stay away, I stayed away. I told her I wouldn't chase if she ran away from me, and I didn't. I waited for her to call me. We spent many hours in intellectual conversation. I never pressured her to marry me, and she admitted that I wasn't pressuring her, but still she said she felt "pressured by the situation". Three years, from first date, to the final discard, with many episodes of running away and coming back in between. I've recently found online videos about the phenomenon of avoidants and diacards, and they're helping me realize there was nothing I could have done differently that would have changed the outcome.

From what I've understood so far, the people with this attachment style simply don't want a relationship. Plain and simple. A friendship at most, of the casual type, but not a real, mature, and committed relationship. That's my takeaway.

@@arthurrubents That's true. Deep down, they believe there's safety in being alone, though they may not consciously realize it. So they say they're open to a relationship, but quickly panic when they find themselves in a developing relationship. "I'm waiting for 'the one', you're just not 'the one'".

So true, you just feel like a normal friend who has intimate acts with them.
