In this video I show you my method for making cheap, easy, modular dungeon walls for my dungeon tiles system, for games like Dungeons & Dragons, (and other TTRPGs not owned by Hasbro) inspired by the arcane methods of ‪@WylochsArmory‬ and ‪@BlackMagicCraftOfficial‬ !!!!

Getting spoiled with rapid fire Dana Howl content. Thank you!

It's a result of very weird scheduling on my part! these were supposed to be staggered throughout the month, but maybe it's more fun to have them rapid fire like this!!!!

OH the re-using that baseboard is ingenious.

Thanks Wyloch!!! I feel like the only downside is that these walls are a bit tall and obstruct vision just a bit but they work great as accent pieces, and are easy to remove when needed

I commented the same in the previous video, but now that I got this one early a better chance to get read: Instead of using a blade, you may purchase a cheap SOLDERING IRON to burn the foam and carve the textures. Faster and safer!

If you remove the paper backing, you can also just score lines into the foam, then run the end of a ballpoint pen into it to widen the grooves.

I'm amazed how well this gives a subway sewer vibe. Don't know if it's the colors or the arches. Though the colors remind me of old fast food dinner rooms like Wendy's or burger King circa late 90s, early 00s

Idea for the corners: have a pillar or column add on one side of each tile, that the other corner piece can buttress up against without having to overlap two walls at all?

Lets see those corner clips! WOOOO!

You could use the first wall that you cut the texture into as a stamp for the next wall, kind of like lino printing. That way you don't have to draw out the design each time. Paint will be printed onto the second wall but the cut outs will stay blank so you know where to cut on the next wall.
@DanaHowl

I tend to print templates and then glue them onto things for (roughly) this kind of job, a habit I originally developed when getting lazy about making boxes and trays for board game organisation. But it might unduly complicate the cutting here, I dunno. The transfer printing idea is cool.

When i encounter corners that "don't meet" i place a column, also they are not attached so it doesn't ruin the modularity.

Great job. I really like how friendly and approachable your tone is. One suggestion: many folks who have launched into using 3D walls eventually switch over to half-height walls because on the gaming table in real life it's much easier to see what is happening without having to get up and "look down" into the dungeon. Just a thought: you might want to try doing a set of half-height walls for comparison. :)

Suggestion for corners: You could make specific corner clip-ons that duplicate the clip feature for the floor along 1 edge to clip to the next wall. Make the corner wall so it clips bottom and left and only use those wall pieces when you wish to make a corner... If you make the corner walls a blank design instead of an archway or alternate design like a pipe end or grate, it won't give a weird look to the corner when assembled.

Every step of the way I think "there is no way this is going to look good, this is a bad idea. But then we get to the end, and of course they look great. I don't think cutting out all the stones from foam board is for me, but the effect came out much better than I expected and it is viable technique. I look forward to seeing an update in a few years about how well they hold up. I expect they will stand the test of time, but who knows?

I play regular D&D with a similar kind of tile system. (Thanks, Black Magic Craft) The missing piece for me is SciFi tiles with a grid because I run a homebrewed 5E D&D SciFi campaign. (Deck plates, corridors, etc.) I feel like you could make some really good SciFi tiles with a bit of variety and I would love to see (by that I mean copy) whatever you come up with. Thanks as always for your content, you got me to try glazing before slap-chop was a thing. I love what you bring to this space and I feel like I learn something about art theory from you every time.

I would, probably, do something to make the arch stand a bit more proud over the brickwork for a detail thing. Possibly by splitting up the build a bit and having a layer of cereal box cardstock behind the arch as a spacer.

Had the thought of getting some of the sew-on hook and loop tape and then gluing sections of one side onto the backs of the walls. That way you can put them together in a corner and use a strip of the other side to attach them tightly together without any gaps. But you still keep everything modular, and you could use it for linking longer sections of wall together, too.

You'd probably be best off making dedicated corner pieces, like a single tile of floor with a continuous wall on two sides. Sure, that would mean that tile isn't completely modular, but as long as it's single tiles they'd still be pretty versatile. That would also be useful for making other tricky ones, like dead ends or T-Junctions.

Love these walls. I wonder if you have a bunch to make instead of measuring and drawing on each, if it'd be worth finding someone with a laser engraver. Design the arch once in Inkspace and take the wall to the blanks to the engraver. very repeatable too! Then you carve them like Dana shows to have that customized look.

If you peel off the paper backing, then the straight cut and pen/pencil deepen/bevel step will definitely work. Without the paper, a terrain roller will also work (but mileage may vary depending on roller)
