In this video I compare two Craftool edge bevelers against two #125 Common Edgers from CS Osbourne.
We discuss the overall functionality of the tools and do a direct comparison on 7-9 ounce leather as well as 12-14 ounce veg tanned leather.

If the pieces are coming off wider, does that mean I should size down? I like the #1 because I don't want sharp looking edges per say

you do not want to remove too much material with each pass. Your goal is to end up with a roundish edge after removing material from the front and back of the edge you are working on. This will allow you to achieve a nice burnished Edge.

So now that I'm upgrading. I like the #1 size. Should I get CS Osborne or Tandy Craft tool PRO? Thanks

I prefer the CS Osbourne over Tandy. They seem better made and function better in my opinion.

@@MichaelMaysLeatherworks somebody just advised me Barry King edger. That they come sharp out of the box. I'm horrible with the strop

@@LJay-pv8lm Barry King tools are excellent from what I've been told, but are rather expensive. Just an FYI, the CS Osbourne tools come sharp. I have a few of their tools & I've never been disappointed.

Re: "I like the #1 size" . Size of edger traditionally corresponds with the thickness of the leather you're working with. Two pieces of 10 oz sewn together would generally look better using a larger bevel than you would if you were using 3 oz leather. The intended goal is to end up with a half round edge without a flat spot rather than so etching similar to chamfered edges on top and bottom.

Nice video. I to have the ones you are testing. That being said I prefer the Osborne 133 edgers 00/0/1 I think it's only fair to mention that most of tandy's tools are more a entry level tool. But on the other hand Craftool pro line tools in my eyes are pretty decent. I am in no means promoting any of these tools. Tandy does play a key roll in the hobby of leathercraft.

When I first started leather working all of my tools were from Tandy Leather. Buying high-end tools as soon as you get into this hobby is Impractical and would quickly drive people out of the hobby. Using the beginner level tools is definitely a good way to test the waters and see if this hobby is for you.

I have those same Osbourne edgers . They're terrible. Very inconsistent, one time it will run ok then the next it will dig in too deep. That "ridge" doesn't matter, edges should all get sanded and the ridge goes away. I've got the tandy ones also. They work ok but hard to sharpen properly. If you want a good inexpensive edger, get the replaceable blade plastic handle edger kit from Jeramiah Watt, Horseshoe Brand tools.

Greg I do agree that these do take more practice to get consistent results. I have found if you keep them nice and sharp, a consistent skive is easier to achieve. Similar to using a french style skiver! Thank you so much for your observation and tool tip. I'll have to look at the kit you spoke of.
