I have one that has served me well for over 50 years. Never been opened up. I think I will give it a good cleanup and greasing after watching how to do it. Thanks for the video.

They aren’t perfect ratchets but they do the job and last if you care for them.

What every good mechanic should do.Tool maintenance and correct use.The actual kits for those ratchets have been obsolete for 20 years now.Best lube is really never seize copper based compound a very thin coat works. Also, other than that an excessive amount of lube just picks up dirt.

Years ago I bought a box of junk tools at an auction, there was a Mac 3/8 drive ratchet in the box but it didn't work. I soaked it over the winter in wd-40 and kroil and cyclo break away mix and in the spring it was like new! I love bad tools. Nice video, lets see more.

I agree. It's worthwhile to put love into tools so they can last. I love finding tools second hand or getting hand-me-downs to revitalize them. Many more videos like this to come. Cheers

The ratchets aren't good but I use their sockets all the time. They've been good to me. Can't all be winners.

Subscribed. I have the same ratchet, except it skips in one direction, but works in the other. I assume the teeth are worn in the direction it slips, and I was trying to swap it via the warranty thing, but after seeing your video, I may open it up and give it a go. Aside from that, I enjoyed the video in general - and I hope your channel blows up (that you strike RU-vid gold). I hope you make more of these. I'll start going through your other videos as well. All the best and thanks again for sharing this video!

You’re too kind! I do have many more so feel free to check them out (and welcome to the community)! I prefer these than the new Chinese ones so I’d say it’s worth checking!

Great video, I was just given both 1/2 in and 3/8 craftsman ratchet like these and was wondering if I could rebuild them. Way less parts compared to modern ratchets.

Agreed. I’ve purchased a few ratchets off the shelf that were bone dry.

Great video. Mine broke today. I think it was the retaining clip on the direction lever. Where can I get a replacement?

It's tough to find rebuild kits or just individual parts on Amazon but sometimes you'll have luck by searching eBay with the model number of the ratchet.

Keeping the ball bearing held down while you put the pawl in can be a real pain in the ass, for my 1/4" drive the compressed spring will stick out enough to keep the ball bearing in the way when trying to insert the pawl... This video shows a trick using a piece of solid copper wire that worked for me ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z_G6SCzY8hM.htmlsi=yPEb-cHHHXaQ0L9Y

@@learnsavediy It was my dad's ratchet. He probably hasn't used it for years and the switch wasn't working properly. It was filthy inside haha but not really worn. Would have been much easier to replace it with a new one, but there's something so satisfying about finally fixing it

I can’t find anything 3/8 on Amazon but eBay definitely has some. These are the only ones I could find on Amazon. Repair Kits (verify model number before ordering!) 1/2 Drive: amzn.to/47RZhYY 1/4 Drive: amzn.to/3OWmVLe
