Craftsman Riding Lawn Mower Spindle Assembly

Well done in all aspects! Thanks for a simple and clear explanation for this process. Videos like yours makes it easy to see how it SHOULD go! I've linked my PDF Repair manual to this video so I can refer to it for other repairs. Mine was slightly more complicated, in that the entire spindle bolt assembly was broken from the spindle housing (from hitting a chuck of 4x4 post piece in the tall grass in a pasture) , meaning the assembly would free spin when I tried to remove the pulley mounting nut (1:57 in video). Even though the spindle assembly was flopping around, I was still able to secure the blade with a creatively placed block of wood. The mounting nut was frozen in place also...even my breaker bar wouldn't break it free. I ended up spraying the nut with WD-40 and letting it set, then used my propane torch to heat up one side of the bolt (which is brass), expanding it just enough to let the WD-40 get down the threads and it broke free right away. Then I had to remove the broken housing pieces that were still bolted in place. Secured the jagged edges with vice grips in order to keep them from free-spinning when taking the bolts out (2:40). The rest was all down hill. Thanks again!

Very clear and well produced video. Thanks for pointing out the cables and mounting points. Your procedure was very straightforward to follow. I prefer to remove the blades with the deck in its upmost position before starting the procedure. That avoids having to flip the whole deck over just to remove the blades. I thought it was good advice to also replace the mounting bolts for the mandrell. In addition I replaced the blade mounting bolt/washer as well, the bolt threads can be weakened due to over-tightening when the blade hits a rock or other hard object.

I didnt remove deck. Plenty of room lower the deck, jacked mower up with floor jack. Small bolts are going to snap & new OEM spindles come with self tapping bolts, easier to use impact and vise to thread holes "before" installing on deck. Easy... I bought a blade lock tool yrs ago. Best $10 I spent in yrs.

Thx for the help! : ) And I was able to get the 4 spindle mounting bolts off by first spraying on some penetrating oil, both sides, then letting it sit 15 min or so before removing them. Only one broke off. My mower is a 2006 model and it's 2017 currently.

It's funny that this deck and mandrel have seen almost zero use. In fact, the mandrel bolt will normally break off when attempt is made to loosen. In other words, this is far from a typical experience when replacing a mandrel. No dirty/rusty parts, no cursing or bloody fingers. Dude didn't even get his pants dirty! ;)

Always hitting roots, stumps. Bending blades. Just broke a spindle. The cast mounting flange broke from mower deck, making the whole job harder.

I found that if the mower is an older one, like mine the bolts break off, so it's easier leave the spindle housings in place and just replace the bearing. Anyone know the spindle bolt size, length and pitch. Every old broke and the cheap Amazon spindles didn't come with any.

There's no torque specs on any of that???

Spindle broke on two corners underneath and the mounting bolts wont turn, only the broken-still attached spindle portion, having trouble getting them out. :(

How do I keep mine from breaking? Literally every-time I mow I have to replace this part because the blades stop working. Do they make a hardened steel version of this spindle that is more resilient? It seems like the ones on the Craftsman mower I have are made out of the cheapest Chinese metal.

Spindle is worn where the blade (star) attaches underneath. Blade bold will not tighten blade to star so the blade just spins. How do I get pulley off if I can not stop the blade from spinning?

How much do one of those spindle assemblies cost? a part on mine just snapped yesterday, and I have the exact same mower that you used in this video.

Now how do it the easy way.. I just replaced mine and didn't need to remove the deck . I put a brick under the left rear wheel to give me room under the cutting deck then removed the top nut holding the pulley , then the blade bolt and then the 4 bolts holding the spindle on .Assembly was the reverse.. It took less than 20 minutes

JUST one more step if you replace one with a greaseable fitting don't forget to remove the inner seals ,if you donot the bearing will not get any grease,if you use a grease gun

Buy new bolts when you order your new mandrel! You're not reusing them when one snaps when taking off the old mandrel. Friggin "parts experts" - if I forget something at the auto parts store, their parts experts will remind me - "did you need some caliper grease with that?" "Hey, thanks! I forgot!"

This video is on how to replace the Mower Deck Spindle, not the front wheel Spindle, so the description for this video is incorrect in saying that you'll replace this when the mower won't steer straight.

Can I take the spindle bearing off , without taking the blade off? Blades are on tight, can't loosen them.. Then get the blades off ?

Make sure you buy new bolts cause you're likely to sheer the old ones!

What if you dont have Brand new never used mower with good mandrals so not useful to me was six min of my life i will never get back thanks for wasting my time
