TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joined the guys and reacted to the William Nylander deal in Toronto, what it means for Elias Pettersson and more.
Security cuts both ways ..knock on wood TJ could get injured and have his career ended at anytime. That 7 yr contract is money in the bank. Yeah he could have waited and got more, but that is risky too. I bet Pittsburgh is kicking themselves that they didn't trade for Miller last season.
Crazy to hear someone say Miller is underpaid a year after people were saying his contract was unmovable because hes overpaid. I was saying that he was worth his contract back then when everyone was freaking out
@@matt_hhh JT Miller, who was born in March 1993, will be 31 even before the 2024 NHL postseason has started. Sens' centre Tim Stützle, born in January 2002, will be celebrating his 22nd birthday next week. The Miller and Stützle contracts respectively expire in June 2030 and June 2031. Even by June 2031, Stützle won't have reached his 30th birthday while Miller is already a 30-something. How well either contract ages remains TBD.
@@stizz19 A US$8 million per-season cap hit looks like a steal for a Miller who, unlike a Tim Stützle (Sens' centre) whose PSCH is US$350,000 more and who's yet to play in an NHL playoff game. Sens' captain Brady Tkachuk's PSCH is almost US$206,000 more than Miller's but that Tkachuk bro (unlike his brother Matt) has yet to play in an NHL playoff game. Miller, with the Canucks' having played so well, likely will see playoff action this season barring something unexpected, such as a freak injury, that happens. Should he see playoff action, it'll be the 1st such action since the Canucks' 2020 run to a conference semifinal. Stützle and B. Tkachuk have yet to see playoff action while their current team has lost 7 (all in regulation) of its last 10 games and hasn't seen a win streak of >2 games since November. Stützle has put up 6 points (1 goal) over his past 10 games but only 1 (an assist against the Canucks) in his last 5. B. Tkachuk has 3 points (all assists) in his last 5 and 8 (2 goals) in his last 10. That said, he last scored in a Sens' late-December win over the Leafs, but that was 6 games ago. I see changes to the Sens' roster not just necessary but likely inevitable, with Southeastern Ontario a rather small market by NHL standards and no playoff appearance for what looks very likely to be a 6th straight season.
@@Nickh4929 The Jets last offseason traded to the Kings then-restricted free agent PL Dubois in exchange for Rasmus Kupari, Gabe Vilardi, Alex Iafallo and a 2nd-round 2024 NHL Draft pick, with the 3 then-ex-Kings at the time also having been RFAs with, like PLD, the ability to exercise arbitration rights. All 4 then-RFAs signed multi-season contracts with their new teams. Maybe that trade will be a precedent for a trade of Pettersson the centre should he want a higher per-season cap hit than the Canucks are prepared to offer him.
@@wainber1 I mean if the Canucks can get a legit top 6 forward with a couple prospects and a 1st…that could work for Pettersson. Then the Canucks can sign someone like Elias Lindholm for cheaper too.
@@rubberduckie5518 Not signing Petey the centre will open up so many doors for the Canucks should the per-season cap hit he hopes the Canucks will give him means, because it is well above his existing one, he must play for another NHL team if he wants to continue his career in that league.
Salary cap is supposed to only go up $4 million for next season and $2.2 million of that is already going to be eaten up by the increase in OEL's dead cap. Petey deserves the raise but with Hronek, Zaborov, Cole, Blueger, and Joshua also needing resigning, I can't help but wonder which player or players we lose to keep him. Does Myers walk completely, freeing up $6 million, or do they retain him for less?
I don’t believe Zadorov resigns unless he takes under 4M. Joshua gonna get paid BIG so he’s off the table for resigning. Teddy MIGHT resign for around 2.5M per. We have to focus on Hronek, Petey and maintaining the strong blueline next season imo
If you look at the top 5 teams in the NHL standings today .. and look how many $10M+ players they have. Depth is more important than a $35M first line.
@@hockeyplayerU15 Nylander has performed in postseason play more consistently than any of Matthews, Marner and Tavares have. Petey has seen playoff action but in only 1 season. In that season, however, he averaged slightly over a point per game. Nylander has in postseason play averaged 0.8 points/game including >0.9 from the 2021 postseason onward. While it didn't surprise me Nylander was going to likely earn a per-season cap hit, on his next contract, of ≥US$7 million, it was surprising that Sens' centre Tim Stützle, effective for this season, signed a contract with a PSCH of not just US$2 to US$3 million or so but OVER US$8 million. I dunno why Stützle would've done so despite NOT having seen playoff action since his days having played for a farm team of Adler Mannheim, a top-tier German hockey team, in a 2020 playoff tourney. I may have more to say on the Stützle contract in another post.
I would give the edge offensively production wise to Nylander. Petterson is a C and more of a twf with great hockey senses. If Nylander is getting 11.5 petterson should be getting 11. But if petterson is smart he would take a cut so he can win the cup.I have a big problem with superstar players getting paid like this when they haven't won. Mackinnion cashed in because he won the cup.
@@BrownKnee666 Except Pettersson is better offensively than Nylander, considering Pettersson is over a PPG in his career while Nylander is not. That means Nylander is not more consistent.
Law of Averages. Nylander made only and only $6.9mil a year, a bargain contract for the for points he put up per year for past few years. So, Nylander just averaged out the money he basically discounted the Leafs before. Petterson has been making $7.78 mil for the past few years. He is worth that money but sometimes inconsistent due to injuries hidden or whatever. Law of averages says Petterson should not make more than Nylander now. May be the same because he was making tons of money already. Nathan McKinnon was the same. He was underpaid for a couple of years for the team to sign free agents and spread the wealth. Now, he is one of the highest paid if not the highest. The law of average should average out. Petterson was not underpaid. So, his agent should not rub their hands in glee and greed because the player treat Petterson well in the last contract and should stay the course, not over-inflating everything like your grocery bills at Loblaws stores............
Bottom line the Leafs have to beat Florida , Boston to make it out of the Atlantic. Signing Nylander for all this cap space does not help a team that's already too top heavy in cap spending and lacking good defense and goaltending.
If I’m the Canucks manager I sit the Petterson camp down and be truthful. The leafs group is full of morons and in no way does that contract reflect anything worth considering when comparing contracts. It’s a joke contract and we can’t use it as a comparison.
The Canucks may have to deal Petey similar deal to Dubois. Get a top 6 forward back, couple prospects and a pick. Clears up cap space too. Signing Petey for 12M shouldn’t be on the table.
William Nylander's season PIM high of 32 minutes proves he is a Power Forward with more toughness and grit than Nancy Pettersson's season high PIMs of only 18 minutes. That's easily $3.5 million more value Willy offers than Elias per season.
And so is Mathews 40-50 goal seasons going forward. Who made it possible for Mathews Rocket Trophy and Tavares’s career high 47 goals? Sures hell wasn’t Nylander.
