@@simondaughtry4619 It definitely doesn't harm a lot of people who gamble. As long as they are smart gambler and have a bankroll and are prepared to lose it. I just don't understand it personally because while a lot of the games are fun (Slots are idiot machines), losing is both way more likely than winning AND I hate losing exponentially more than I like winning. The rare times I do gamble it's sports betting, video poker and blackjack so I can at least minimize the house edge.

I am dead serious, at least with the drugs you are guaranteed a high. Now I wouldn't recommend making a habit of it, but a gambling habit is terrible for you too. Look at it this way: 40 bucks of cocaine will last a novice at least a whole night and it will be a very fun night. 40 bucks of heroin could probably last the same novice a weekend, and it will be a very fun weekend. Take that same 40 bucks to a casino and you would be hard-pressed to make it last an hour and it will be a very sad night, meanwhile the drug users are still high.@@jpcoqueran

I agree with this 100%. The last thing MLB wants to do is to damage Ohtani’s brand and by extension their own with a suspension or placing him on the restricted list. I don’t believe there will be any disciplinary action taken against him unless he is indicted in connection with the commission of a crime or if MLB determines that he was directly involved in betting on baseball. The fact that Ohtani was permitted to participate post-scandal in one of the biggest showcases for the league this year outside of the World Series is telling which is why the OP is essentially correct, this will be handled differently.

Ohtani's camp let the interpreter speak for 90 minutes to ESPN but they didn't prep him beforehand? They didn't ask him what he was going to say? Either they're incredibly stupid or they were fine with what he was saying but then realized after the fact that implicated Ohtani, and then did a complete 180 the next day. If the interpreter is as close as they say then surely they'd prep him. I'm calling BS. Lots of holes.
@jldraw

This is what I pulled from the CBS, take from it what you will “On Thursday, a source close to Ohtani gave an explanation for the changing storylines. As Ohtani’s handlers tried to determine what happened, they initially relied solely on Mizuhara, who continued to translate for Ohtani.” =============== So does it make sense that Ohtani’s handlers would rely on Mizuhara to essentially put their version of this story out to the press? We know he was well connected in that it seems as if he was Ohtani’s first lieutenant so did they just give him free rein believing that either he had Ohtani’s best interests at heart or at least was further up the chain of command than they were so they didn’t question him? I don’t know seems like this was the dude they all trusted for better or worse and now he has lied somewhere because both statements can’t be true.

@@jldraw It sure felt like Ippei got full reign on how ever he wanted to spin the story. Ohtani's issue here is that he became too close to his interpreter. Great point Craig made ..NO bookie is going to give a random person a 1 million dollar line of credit. It has to be Ohtani placing those bets.
@jldraw
@jldraw 2 месяца назад
I tend to believe Craig but I’m not going to trust his word so blindly to implicate Ohtani without any evidence of wrongdoing which doesn’t yet exist or the mainstream media would’ve been all over that like a blanket. What we have is an alleged compulsive gambler giving two vastly different explanations as to the $4.5 million in question with each statement conflicting the other. Given that addicts are among the best liars you’ll ever come across I’m far more inclined to believe much of what has been reported thus far all of which stems from Ippei himself is the result of someone spinning their wheels every which way upon realization that this terrible addiction and the resultant fallout that they’ve been hiding has now been brought out into the light and they are trying to extricate themselves from the situation by any means. I find that to be far more plausible than Ohtani being a criminal mastermind pulling the strings behind the scenes for much the same reason I rarely buy into the talk dark figure jumping out of the shadows to commit a random murder.

@@sk1nz28if he sent out the money in good faith (to bail out Ippei and had zero knowledge that he was transferring to an illegal bookie) then he isn't guilty of anything. I think that's where it's headed. His lawyers are already doing a 180 by saying Ippei stole Ohtani's money. Stolen money in this case could mean that Ippei wasn't upfront that the debt was incurred through an illegal bookie. Ohtani was led to believe that everything was legal and therefore he wouldn't be complicit in a crime. Another interesting angle in this is if Ippei had access to one of Ohtani's accounts. It's not farfetched to believe that Ohtani, a guy all about baseball, has an account set up for Ippei that doesn't require Ohtani's time and presence. The reports were only 1m was transferred to the bookie. Yet the 'stolen' amount was 4.5m. So how did Ippei steal 3.5m? Also interested to hear from the bookie himself.
@ykyang5786
@ykyang5786 2 месяца назад
@@sk1nz28 What kind of involvement. If Ohtani didn't ask questions and he gave Ippei the money to pay Ippei's debt, then he should be suspended. If Ippei misled Ohtani telling him that everything is legal and made Ohtani bail him out as "loan" was written on the wires, then that should be theft by deception. Same way ponzi schemes get everyone to give them money. If this was Ohtani doing the betting, we wouldn't see this. My brother was a big gambler 20 years ago, and he had a separate bank account where he used those cash for gambling purposes without telling his wife. Once the cash ran out, he used credit cards to pull more cash at the casino's atm. That's why it's so implausible that Ohtani is the one betting. First of, why would he place the bets here in the states when he usually goes back to Japan in the offseason. Second, why wire it directly from his account when it would have been easier to us Ippei's account for his benefit. Third, why bet on credit when he has the cash. He made $30 million last year plus $30-$50 million in endorsements. Who would be betting on credit? Ippei, after he used up all his cash.

Handling funds up to 1 billion yen. It is believed that they took advantage of such a position. Gambling addiction is frightening.

It's a shame if Ohtani is implicated. What a career laid out ahead of him on the bigggest stage in baseball and on one of the most storied teams in baseball - underacheivers as they have been over the years. I'm a Giant fan, so I say, if this goes South, and it is at least looking that way, Otani will be the Dodger's Barry Bonds. The only difference is that we got to see Bonds play his whole career and watch what he achieved, regardless of PED's. PED's don't increase wrist and hand speed, and he could get around on a ball better than all but a few who have ever played. I am not a Dodger fan, but I am a Sandy Koufax fan. I would have enjoyed following Otani's career with the Dodgers to see what he could achieve with more baseball talent than anyone on the planet. If it turns out that Otani gets banished from the game, at least the Dogers get most of that $700,000,000 back to try to buy a World Series another way.

@@Landis_GrantTrue but there is that other aspect that the MLBPA is one of the strongest unions in the world and backed the players to the hilt at every turn. I assume they’d do the same for Ohtani.

I’m a Japanese. Compared to other Japanese, Ohtani has zero interest in gambling, not a moment in his life. Every people who have known him since childhood and up until now can attest to that. He’s been known not caring about money all his life. So what really happened? I don’t know. The truth must come out at whatever the cost is. Abiding the law must come first and foremost, whether or not you agree with that law. I hope Americans do what’s right for Americans. Shohei still have a place in Japan and play baseball that he loves. Japanese welcome him back again anytime.

Stop with the "friends" gambling debts, those were 100% Ohtani's bets for 4.5 million and those bets were not on college football.

I have to wonder what kind of money the interpreter had or made & what his net worth is. That will tell you if it’s even possible for him to get to $4.5 million in debts. And as to access to the bank account, a forensic examination could likely answer that question (I.e. who had access, how many locations accessed the account on different times, were other transactions made that are attributed to the interpreter too …). It’s a fishy story so far …

My guess is that Ohtani has an account funded for Ippei to move money without the need for him being bothered about it. Ippei has handled most of Ohtani's affairs in the US including handling donations worth millions.

Maybe if he learned how to speak English, he wouldn't have to rely on shady interpreters.
@sb17146
@sb17146 2 месяца назад
He speaks English in the locker room but wants an interpreter for a formal setting which is in front of the media. I've taught English to Japanese, Korean and Chinese students. Their dialect makes it very hard for them to enunciate English words. Their written and spoken rules are also very different from English which makes them speak literally rather than in a concise manner. This is why you have Asian immigrants who have been in the US for decades who still have a hard time speaking English. Ippei is also more than just a translator at this point. He has been a PA, handling a lot of Ohtani's affairs outside of baseball.

"Ohtani has been dedicated to health management, training, and prioritizing sleep since his days with the Nippon-Ham Fighters, rarely dining out. He even received complaints from senior players in Japanese baseball for being 'unsociable.' Apart from baseball, he's likely to spend his time indulging in manga and games. His daily routine is supported by numerous testimonies from teammates like Trout and other Angels players. There's no time for things like gambling. There's no doubt about it."

Major Leage Baseball will be just fine, if Ohtani happens to be suspended or banned. Ohtani was good for baseball but no matter what, this will still tarnish him. There are too many giant holes in the explanation by Ohtani's camp, especially after the complete 180 just after the lawyers jumped in to the mix. Something stinks here. Regardless, I will continue to watch and enjoy the game I love. I only wish I can go back in time so I can play for another 30 years. Very interesting insight by Craig Carton.

This is the answer Power of Attorney(POA) or check writing privileges ohtani is completely innocent👍 DANIEL KIM said When I worked as an interpreter, I had to assist the players on just about every aspect of their daily lives. These include: opening bank accounts, taking them to DMV to get licenses, and setting up utilities. I also carried their check books on the road for clubhouse dues.

One of the best takes on this story I've seen. All the other major news outlets spinning this for clicks and views like Ohtani was the one gambling through the interpreter. Guy deferred 680M, mapped his entire life towards a championship he does nothing but play baseball, and media is trying to make it like he's a degenerate gambler making bookings through his interpreter. Lawyers are fucking things up on purpose.

Yeah that has always been the book on Ohtani that really his only interest is baseball. It will be a revelation to learn that in fact he was a closeted compulsive gambler to the point where he was placing illicit bets. But if that’s what people want to believe that is certainly their prerogative to do so.
