This is just a small slice of Craig's Vehicle Combatives and Shooting Tactics course (VCAST). The rest of the course is just as valuable!

This is why it's important to look for potential preditors before exiting. Check your mirrors and blind spot. If you can see them with the door closed, you can keep that barrier.

I was assaulted in this position, lack of training in this area caused me to resort to my firearm. I've since trained as much as possible for this fight, one I never even conceived could happen until it did.

I'm glad you were able to come out of it okay. I personally don't even open my door when it's a potential risk. A quick check of mirrors and blind spot can save your life.

@@jatbatman that's excellent advice, however in the situation I was in I felt confident in my position because I thought hey I'm in my truck and I'm armed. The attack happened in the transition from mounted to foot patrol. The bad guy came at me running, no preamble. I froze to long in the fatal funnel processing the information I was receiving. First his weapon looked like a shot gun so I drew my sidearm. Turned out it was a homemade spear. So as he closed with me I saw it was a stick I reholstered and he slammed into the door pinning me in the doorway half in half out. Then I thought the door will protect me from the stick so I grabbed for my light to smack him but couldn't reach it pinned in, so I went for my gun to whack him with it. But right then he stabbed at my arm, got it and skinned my left eye area. I realized then hey this is a spear and shot him. He lived, was out of his mind on drugs. Thought I was a police officer coming to arrest him for domestic violence which the police did once he cleared medical. I was just getting off work going to visit his next door neighbor.

@@TTGLL yeah I think people underestimate improvised weapons. I once had to deal with a 5150 strangling a gang banger with a home made bow. He left one side strung and used that for leverage. It was amazing how effective it was. Luckily I was able to separate them and keep them apart. That was when I was working hospital security. Luckily the 5150 was stunned by my commands and let go for a second. Once they were apart I acted as a barrier commanding them back when they would get too close. I can only imagine how wrong that could have gone. I swear by situational awareness, but occasionally it's not enough. Sounds like your case was one of those situations.

Watch and enjoy but don't ask Ultimate Grand Master Douglas questions; he can't handle the pressure test of skepticism from other men and women who are still working the streets.

What about blocking and kneeing the dude in the junk and shrimp out the weak side creating space and time and then putting him at gunpoint? I am no genius or smart man, but once you dump back into the car on your butt the normal untrained person is toast I would think especially if weapons are involved or there is more than one attacker. Craig gives some good stuff to think about though. Thanks.

Just my two cents but to me the most tactically sound and least politically correct is to just have the pistol in your hand already wherever you go, and only holster it when you absolutely need to use two hands for a specific task. it should be in your hand more often than the holster, not vice versa.
