Low rent/high crime areas, rotting out inner city areas, rundown trailer parks, ghettos, poor neighborhoods, etc., I've in and around these type of neighborhoods for a long time. • I've organized resident's meetings on crime prevention, and helped neighborhood associations with security measures for safety purposes to benefit neighbors...I've been a member of Fraternal Order of Police and Law Enforcement Alliance of America; and I'm invited to become a member of Oath Keepers. • Be sober. Be strong. Be vigilant.• Be blessed Warrior Poet Society.

I'm a woman, but I _really_ appreciate this info. Honestly, it all boils down to good intuition and honed instincts. Even as a teenager visiting Beverly Hills, California, I could have gotten killed by an otherwise innocuous-looking nerdy-type guy. But I was wary enough to notice how he was trying to guide me to walk into a secluded area. As he talked, his voice sounded soft, but nervous and rushed. As he spoke, I noticed that he, just for a moment, fidgeted with some long scissors that were hidden in his front-shirt pocket. Huge light bulbs began blasting off in my mind. I quickly but very gracefully edged myself away from him with tactful words (I didn't want to incite anger from him and cause him to grab me, or let him know that I suspected anything), and I was able to get back out onto the open city sidewalk and get clear from him. That was the last time I ever went back to Beverly Hills. BTW, after all these years, I've never told anyone about this. This is the very first time I've ever mentioned it to anyone...

True story here. My family and I were walking through a parking lot to our car, which was parked at a pretty far distance, and I saw this young guy on the right who had apparently been talking on the phone for a while, although in the time I observed him (waiting for my family to catch up with me) he never spoke a word. I saw how he scanned large groups of people walking by, but made no move. By the time my family were about to walk by him, however, we were a small isolated group, so I watched him with my peripheral vision the whole time, dropping back and turning my head slightly to keep him in view. Soon after we passed him, he suddenly put away his phone and started to stride briskly and with purpose in our direction, whereupon I immediately turned toward him and pretended to draw a weapon out of my pocket (crossing my left hand over to make it obvious and recognizable). Almost as soon as I moved, he turned around and strolled casually (almost too casually) back to his original spot (leaning against a car), took out his phone, and pretended to be on a phone call once again. He never looked up at me, as far as I could tell, and I kept watching him until we got to our car. To this day, I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't been so alert. I was completely unarmed because we were just leaving a place that did not allow weapons. In retrospect, we should have waited for another large group of people to leave with so that we could have had safety in numbers, but I really didn't think the guy was a likely threat, given his age and his non-hardened looks (neither hard nor soft, just a regular young adult), and of course I didn't want to alarm my family for what would probably be no reason. I did see fit to watch the guy, though, which I do a lot. And my family thinks it's amusing and a little too obvious how I approach and check blind corners. :)
@rbrtck
@rbrtck 5 лет назад
@Brad Roberts Yes, they have metal detectors, and yes, it's worth the normally very small risk that something like this would ever happen. In the future, I'll take additional steps to avoid vulnerability, though, such as joining larger groups when it is advantageous to do so. That's a good idea whether or not I happen to be armed, because armed conflict is, of course, always the worst-case, last-resort scenario (short of simply being robbed and possibly killed). In addition to always being armed if possible, another good rule to follow is to not do anything or go anywhere when armed that you wouldn't when unarmed (unless you're a soldier or a cop on duty who has to, of course).

I can spot them... problem is I also do a lot of them haha. I have minor Aspergers, so it makes the social world a difficult place for me. I’m full of social anomalies. I scan, but if I meet someone’s eyes, I have to look away cause it’s a massive anxiety trigger. People with Aspergers also fidget with things a lot, clench their fits and so on. We’re not a threat, in fact we’re often very compassionate people (we don’t express it well, so people often think we don’t care) which is why I carry, to protect the people around me. But these things make it difficult to spot a threat sometimes, just cause it seems like everyone is watching me... cause I look like a threat I guess. Anyway, just something interesting to throw out there. I suppose I should be glad people are paying enough attention to pick up on what I do.

as with all profiling and psychology, this is not always true. someone call have all or none of the indicators and attack or not. this only describes nervous behavior, not necessarily aggressive or experienced behavior and even then still isn't accurate. take it with a grain of salt. the most valuable thing he alluded to is the gut feeling. most of the time you'll subconsciously know of a threat before you cognitively recognize it. if you feel it's wrong, it is.
@michaelfranciotti3900

I just recently discovered Active Self Protection on RU-vid. They show and analyze footage of real violent encounters. I've only been watching since yesterday but I've already watched well over a dozen videos. Almost all bad guys displayed multiple threat indicators. I will partly agree with you that you may get a false positive or a successful covert/surprise attack, but they seem to be the exception by far. And while I do agree that one should trust their gut, I also think threat indicators shouldn't be ignored.
@carl-ok9gn
@carl-ok9gn 5 лет назад
@@michaelfranciotti3900 find the ones where no indication was given. frankly, this video gives people a sense that if they dont observe warning signs then nothing is wrong. that's the point i'm making.
