Looks like a cold day! I hate steel cables. Haven’t used any in years. They really make you struggle. You made the best of it though! Enjoyed the video. Nice job as always!.

Yeah, I hate them too. We always get stuck using whatever slings the crane operator shows up with that day. They usually don't trust anything else.... - Patrick

I think this might be my favourite video of all that I've put out. It's one of my very first with the helmet cam. It's just so raw. I love it. Thanks for watching!

Great job but after reading your response to people about the crane operators making you use their steel slings and not letting you ride the ball they are making it harder on you guys!

Do you have a video of your rope setup when working down a spar? Your descent system such as a figure a descender? I what to learn about different techniques people use for this. It looked really cold up there.

Hey Joe, I would usually just have my rope choked off, and then my hitch hiker to descend single line if I had to! - Patrick
@bradmetcalf7832
@bradmetcalf7832 5 лет назад
A running bowline with a long tail works very well. Descend to your next cut pull the tail and the rope falls down to you, rinse and repeat.FWIW

Put your climbing line below your lanyard in case you cut one accidentally. Not right with each other

Do you prefer the cable chokers? They look like a pain in the ass lol. I've only used straps and shackles
@TreeMuggs_PatrickM
@TreeMuggs_PatrickM 6 лет назад
Jason, most of the crane operators that I have worked with will insist that we use whatever slings or chokers they have on the truck, just because they know the history of them. Cable chokers are a bit of a pain in the ass, for sure. Thanks for watching!
@bradmetcalf7832
@bradmetcalf7832 5 лет назад
Hate cables and dislike loop slings. Rope is much easier and faster and allows easy adjustment for tension. Sometimes ya have to dance with the one that brung ya.

This one was fairly calm as far as crane climbs go, just the one pick, but she was a good size. Thanks for watching! -Patrick

Watch you don’t load that side gate on that crane hook. Lay them in there right

If I'm paying a crane operator by the hour he better bring more efficient straps

A smart climber brings his own rigging slings. That way he’s always using what he knows.

Personally i like the weaved & stitched slings the wire ones are super stiff

NEVER rely on a crane operator to provide YOU with tree riggings.

I’m curious to why you didn’t hook to the ball at the ground, ride up, hook chokers, ride line down, tie in where you want to cut.... would have been a lot safer and quicker. I do this everyday for a living. You should always cut above your head or at a minimum head level also.

Most crane ops in Ontario that I have worked with will not allow you to ride the ball on the way up...
@bradmetcalf7832
@bradmetcalf7832 5 лет назад
Bet it was more than that by the time it would take to get the rope set in the tree. Suck's that they won't let you ride the ball in, hell of a lot faster and safer in my book.
