I have had a lot of people ask if the Zhiyin Crane M3 will work with the Canon M50 (or Canon M50 Mark II), and the Simga 16 mm f1.4, and with the Small Rig Cage. Here is a video testing the setup.

Note - with this under-slung work around, you will have to flip the footage in editing (the camera is upside down), this is easily done in even the most basic editors.

Hi mark, what picture profile did you use on this video? did you colorgrade? the color is so nice. im using 16mm sigma too..
@markwiemels

It would be the neutral profile. I may or may not have turned down the color and contrast by one, but can't recall. The Neutral profile looks very natural and organic.

Hello Mark, I discovered your channel a couple of days ago and you make things so easy to understand. I became an instant subscriber. Now that I'm retired I want to dig deeper into photography and combine it with my other hobby cars. I recently purchased an M50 and still learning it's functions. What would you recommend for a second lens to accompany the EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens it came with the kit. I also have a Tamron 24-135mm 1:35-5.6 Macro lens Also have you posted a video with all the functions the camera has. Thanks a million
@markwiemels
@markwiemels 2 года назад
I think those are great lenses to get going with. I would focus on the skills right now, rather than a new lens, once you get your eye in, and improve your photo taking, the right lens "for you" will become more obvious. Check out my best EF-M prime lens video, good lesson at the start. I have not done a full settings video, but plan too.

Hey Mark. Nice video which appears to give a solution for the M50 and Sigma 16mm lens on the Crane M3. However, with such a large aperture on the 16mm lens you need a VND on the front if you're going to use it in daylight and this seems to push the Crane M3 past its limit. Even with counter balancing with the wireless mic receiver on the hot shoe mount it doesn't quite work. The other issue is the battery life of the LP E12 is poor and therefore you have to dismantle the rig, replace battery and rebalance which is a pain. But let me know if you've found a workaround or have a different experience.
@markwiemels
@markwiemels Год назад
No, I don't really have a work around for those issues. I do run my shutter as high as i need to and don't use a VND, but sometimes the shutter won't even go high enough.
@RaySuesTravelChannel
@RaySuesTravelChannel Год назад
@@markwiemels Hey Mark. Thanks for replying. Shame theres no workaround. I'll continue to balance the M50 plus sigma 16mm on the Crane M3 with the VND on it. I try to stick with the 180 degree rule and minimise the shutter speed. I'm also trying to work around the battery life issue with a Dummy battery and power pack. This loads up the gimbal though and also using a smart phone with canon camera connect to allow touch less camera control and recording. Yet to find the complete answer but still keen to use the M50 combo as a main videographic setup.
@blackmamba6938
@blackmamba6938 Год назад
@@RaySuesTravelChannel I have a workaround for the balancing issue. Just place the camera as close to the gimbal as possible when you're mounting it. When you're changing the battery, just unscrew the camera from the bottom instead of taking off the plate. Then when you want to put it back, just screw it back in the same position close to the gimbal.
@RaySuesTravelChannel
@RaySuesTravelChannel Год назад
@@blackmamba6938 Thanks for that. I'll give it a go see how i get on with that. i have been tinkering and am also working on having a power bank located on the gimbal and inserting a dummy battery. There still remains the problem of needing the VND and its at the extreme to what the M3 can handle but with a little adjusting it can go on without overworking the gimbal. Thanks for your response. Ray

I think the main interference is the eye piece, and you could reposition the wireless mic, but the eye piece is the problem?
@markwiemels
@markwiemels 2 года назад
Good eyes! Yes, so when balanced without the wireless mic, the rear motor hits the EVF. Once you add the wireless, it changes the balance, so balanced with the wireless, it now clears the EVF and hits the wireless receiver. In theory, this means it may be possible to rig up some counter weight setup and get the full range of motion, but I have not tried it.

Hey great video as always. Quick question if I wanted to mount a shotgun mic on the m50 do I just balance the crane M3 the best I can within the limited range of motion? You know because the mic is on top does it matter that I can’t tilt the lens to the sky to balance it? Will it still work you think?
@markwiemels
@markwiemels 2 года назад
I'm not sure, it might work, with a limited range of motion.

Hello Mark, Great video, buddy. Just wondering if you have tested the Crane M3 with the Sigma 16mm + ND filter. I was able to stabilise the gimble just with the lense, but once I put the ND filter on it was impossible. I'd appreciate your answer. Cheers buddy.
@Panotaker
@Panotaker 2 года назад
I have the M3 and the A6600 and the Sigma 16. The gimbal will barely handle the setup, but once I add the ND filter, it will no longer balance, but the motors are still strong enough to handle it. But I don’t know how long the motors will last running it that way, and I’m not going to use it that way to find out. Luckily I have the Sony 10-18 lens, and that lens is a lot lighter and can balance just fine with my Wireless Go and an ND filter. I suggest if you have the Sigma 16, you get a bigger gimbal, or if you get the M3, use it with a lighter lens.

I have not, you may be able to do it, if you tape a little counter weight on the quick release plate. Worth a try anyways.
