It seems as if everyone is coming out with a carbon mountain bike wheel these days. Not wanting to get left out, Crank Brothers have introduced their newest wheelset and man oh man these things are sweet. For the past few months, we have been riding the Crankbrothers Synthesis wheels on everything from long cross country, to full days at the park and have to say we are impressed so far. By mixing and matching a compliant front wheel with a stiffer rear, Crank Brothers have been able to create a more forgiving carbon wheelset that can actually flex a bit, rather than remain stiff like many carbon wheels of the past. In this video, we go through the design, specs, and ride quality of the Synthesis wheelset. Check it out!

How about a Carbon wheel in the back, Aluminum wheel in the front?

Yeah absolutely! Love the idea behind these and can't go wrong with Industry Nine hubs.

what the hell is, why not just use ordinary aluminum wheels. they are not stiff. I used the spank spike rim at one time. very reliable and high quality. and much cheaper than any carbon rims.

Worldwide Cyclery I would ride Pirope A.30. Innovative wheel from a german company with aluminium rims, weight of 1520grams, textile spokes, and capable of enduro riding with max rider weight 125kg. Priced from 1050-1250€ depending on spoke protection coating and color. What more could you want? Oh and they have a crash replacement program too. I think you should give them a try. It might be difficult to get them in the US though. Edit: the rims and hubs are from Newmen (german company), seem to be very high quality, have a Newmen rear hub myself and am very pleased with it.

Stiff but not too stiff! Sounds about right! 😜😄 The next step is to make these things more affordable and find a way to recycle the materials 👌🏽

I remember when carbon wheels first came out for super bikes. I had a pair of BST's for my Ducati 1099 and they cost around $3500. They were nice and the bike really turned well and accelerated better, but I wouldn't pay that kind of money again. It's crazy that mtb equivalent is not far off. You're 100% right with cost. Most riders would love a pair but $2400 is the price of a whole bike for most of us or at least close to it. Finding a way to recycle carbon would be huge on cost along manufacturing methods.

Sounds like a rad set of hoops but if I can get a sick wheelset for $700 I'll take those instead, I'd live to see a review on that Revel though!

Jeff, are you sold on these vs. say i9 alum. wheels which youve mentioned on prev. vids that you really prefer? Or do you still prefer alum. wheels?
@WorldwideCyclery
@WorldwideCyclery 5 лет назад
Well it's a tough question. After riding these and Zipp 3zero motos. I am confident both those carbon sets work better than aluminum hands down. I also have not been able to break either carbon rims. Carbon is coming a longggg way. I think in a perfect world, I'd have my local trail bike with carbon rims and then a spare set of wheels with alloy rims for when I go on trips. But unfortunately I can't afford that haha. So for the time being, I'll stick with alloy on my personal bikes. Hope that helps! Cheers.
@boylagz
@boylagz 5 лет назад
@@WorldwideCyclery sweet. Its true though, how carbon hoops feel so different from alum. ones. And youre right having an alloy one for trips makes a lotta sense. Keep doing what youre doing. You guys are awesome.

Must be nice to “feel” the difference in wheel sets. I get it, being a bike shop (sorta) you guys get to test the cream of the crop. I couldn’t tell you the difference between shit because I only have two bikes to compare with and one bike is definitely better than the other. 🤙

If you can ever get to a demo, it's a worthwhile experience. Trying all manner of bikes and linkages can be very informative. I've learned some surprising things about what sort of frames, linkages, frame materials, etc that I prefer.
@dfliedner
@dfliedner 5 лет назад
The big question is, though-- do they really feel THAT much different than a set of Reserves, I9 350 wheels, etc? Could you notice the difference? If you were dropping $2+K on a set of carbon wheels, would you choose these over the others, for example? (Since they are all roughly in that price range anyway)
@WorldwideCyclery
@WorldwideCyclery 5 лет назад
In my opinion yes. These wheels and the Zipp 3zero moto are noticeabley less stiff. In a good way. Is that better? Well maybe not depending on what feel you are looking for. I personally have always thought that carbon rims, ones built for enduro, are too damn stiff to the point where it feels like they often rattle you off line in the rough. Fixing that problem but still having enough stiffness to spring you out of corners is what CB and Zipp were trying to achieve and I think they did. If you have the money to spend on carbon wheels, these should be at the top of the list. In my opinion at least. Hope that helps! Cheers.

I like stiff wheels and ride downhill, the reason for that is because I want to be able to change direction Incase there’s something that I wanna turn out of a snappy corner or avoid some obstacle really quickly and need a stiff rim for that. But I’m worried about how much the front wheel flexes Incase I want to change direction very quickly
@WorldwideCyclery
@WorldwideCyclery 4 года назад
Totally feel you on the stiff wheel preference. But although we are talking about these things being a bit more compliant it's definitely not drastic by any means. And the idea is that the rim kind of pivots around the spoke bed, not that the whole thing is flexi in general. So you still get a very stiff and precise carbon wheel but think of the compliance more so affecting the chatter and vibration in your handlebars and not affecting the stiffness and precision of your steering. Hope that helps! Ride on!
@riammey
@riammey 4 года назад
Worldwide Cyclery ohhhhhhhhhhh, I thought it flexes to track more better on chattery terrain, that makes more sense. I’m a heavier rider at 188 lbs I’m just worried if I can still flex the wheel more than others. Unless I can just tighten the spokes for that if I want it to stay straight

Im not a cheap person, in fact if anything I’m kind of a snob when it comes to my bicycle components… But $2400 for Crank Brothers Synthesis Carbon wheel-set seems ridiculous. Especially when you can get a Nobl or We Are One wheelset, which also have great reputations) for $1k less with a full lifetime guarantee! I love crank brothers but I don’t think Ill be buying a set of their carbon wheels anytime soon.
