This time on SPPTV we continue our Step by Step Series, Building our 5.3 L33 LS Engine. Today we Install the Main Bearings + Crankshaft.
Check out our channel for over 160 Car and LS Engine related videos! SUBSCRIBE if you are new to catch all the new episodes!
The Crankshaft is one of the most important components of an internal combustion engine. If it breaks or is out of balance your entire engine can be destroyed in seconds. Cleanliness and Lubrication are both very important to this process.
LS Engines use a crank sensor triggered by the reluctor wheel on the back of the crankshaft. This signal tells the computer engine RPM basically, and lets the computer know when the engine is turning over. Earlier engines have a 24x wheel, newer ones have a 58x. The differences between the two are a big subject to cover in a video description, but the internet is full of info these days if you look in the right places!

You could use the bolt's head to find the degree. Like the corners (6 or 8) and then dived by 360. And now you got how many degrees is each corner. Just mark a start position so you don't forget where you started from 😅 I've used this method when I'm overhauling a diesel engine and never had a problem

"Why wouldn't you use assembly lube" "never heard of it"😂 just set my crank in, tqking q break and triple checking before I torque it down making sure I didn't forget anything dumb. I used clevite assembly lube on my bearings. 408 build, had an issue with a couple pistons running it too lean. Edge of the piston looks almost like it was smacking the head gasket but it wasn't. So im still not sure unless it melted that way on a lean nitrous pull

Its torque to yield bolts thats why you use angle last because the bolts are stretching if you use ft.lbs it won't be actuate and you will continue to torque it trying to reach that torque and will snap bolt. And if it doesn't snap, the torque won't be even across the caps and could break while engine is running.

Better assembly lube is heat the clean crank to about 200 degrees and spray with dry film graphite it stays on the crank coat it with stp ive had motors with this and the coating was still there when dissasembled i also coat the bearings and bake them to 200 for 10 minutes most bering companys have this kind of coating on race berings it works good

Heard somewhere that you shouldn’t use oil or any type of lube for main cap bolts unless otherwise stated by manufacturers instructions cause it affects the torque.. also never add or guess anything when torquing anything on an engine especially main / rod caps.. Did you guys check the main bearing clearance before you put them in?
@garylogan5460
@garylogan5460 6 лет назад
think about common sense here ,a head bolt is when torqued has little bit of spring steal in them so that said when you torque they will try to spring back a little,I go 5 to 10 lbs.more.I take chevy manuals with a grain of salt.

Anyone doing an LS engine rebuild, DO NOT skip cleaning out all the fastener holes, many (all?) are blind and there's a few horror stories I've read where a hole was not cleaned out and the pressure from the fastener, with crap in the hole, split the block. 5 weeks until Gimli opens.

The one part I see on all these LS builds is no one tells you which side the tab goes on the main bearing cap cuz main bearing cap can take the tab on the bearing either way so do you want both tabs on the same side or do you want them offset

Clayton is a Ford guy and not use to working with bendy tools lol bendy tool that is 5 pounds off to start with can only imagine how far it's really off lol I just wonder if that cam tunnel is off seems odd that the other cam wouldn't work but the old one did but there was a lot of valve train noise with the old one also just wondering if something got shifted seems like them aluminum blocks have issues..... You guys buying a new cam or just the old one ?

How did you guys check for bearing clearances?
@blindabinda1234
@blindabinda1234 6 лет назад
Cole Murphy so your saying don't ever check the clearances because it's a stock block and crank? Depending what this engine is being used for and the power goals and oiling system all have to do with the clearances. Clearancing does more than just tell you clearances. But you go ahead and throw engines together all you want. I'll stick with getting the clearances exactly where I want them. I'm guessing you probably don't balance your rods either.
@blindabinda1234
@blindabinda1234 6 лет назад

You really should use angle torque...there is no equal in Ftlbs...thread size, pitch, crap in the threads all make a difference...Angle torque is the only way to get the torque correct.

The main cap bolts are torque to angle, but NOT torque to yield. They can be reused. But this may not be desirable on an old engine or after a number of disassemblies.
