I like to use a modified plastic bait to imitate a leech. I take a long, curly tailed worm and cut it short so I have about 3 inches of tail and a quarter inch of the body. It works great with a black jig or bullet weights.

I found a lure that works by accident. I relocated from WA to AR, brought my trout gear and after lots of casting and not catching I tied on a chartreuse Pistol Pete fly. These flies have a small propeller near the top of the hook that gives flash and mimics motion, and the crappie went nuts for them. Sadly I snagged and lost the last two I had so I'll have to get some more online.

I live near Sullivan Lake, Sullivan, Sullivan County, Sullivan, Indiana(Guess they liked the name, huh??) What works best for me is a 1/16th oz. jig head with a blue with white tail solid head jig body. Usually outfishes live minnows, even in cold water conditions. I use a light action rod with 6 lb. test line, many times under a weighted tube shaped bobber, for a slower presentation. When they are hitting more aggressively, I use a jig spinner to make a mini spinnerbait.

Egret Wedgetail crappie minnows are my favorites. Looks and swims like a minnow at all speeds from very slow to fast. I have fished for years with these and always will. Many good baits out there, but none have that fast side to side tail swim at all speeds, like the 2" wedgetails. I fish them slow in and around structure. People fish these too fast, but slow n easy is killer.

When did crappie move north? It have I been in the dark. As a kid, waaay back during WW2, in Mississippi, we’d go over into Louisiana with a double flat boat, and cane poles. Used works and every time we would take one off, and Reba it we’d catch another. This was in the lake/swamps full of huge fresh water cedars.

Bluegills are very easy. Ultralight rod and they'll eat pretty much anything that will fit in their mouths and they can out swim. Ideally red worms beetle grubs, wax worms etc. Even a piece of a night crawler. Or any lure that mimicks these foods sources. Fish eggs even used canned corn before. They usually like some sort of structure just like Crappie and alot of times you'll find them together with Crappie or very near by. But Bluegills are easier to catch and usually locate than Crappie are. Alot of times if there's bass or Crappie in the body of water your fishing chances are there's Bluegills too. You'll find them all over the place. Biggest thing is water temperature cold water your gonna have a slow bite. They tend to bite better when Temps get up close to 70 degrees. Spring time during spawn they'll bite. But unlike trout pike and Walleye they're more of a warm water type of fish. Like bass and Crappie are. But then if you're in Texas you probably don't need to worry about temp as much. At least in spring and fall anyway. I'm in Maryland and they're all over the place out here. In the ponds lakes rivers and the Chesapeake Bay and it's tributaries. They're fairly hardy little fish. Alot of spring fed ponds around here and they fill all of them up with large mouth bass and some have Crappie in them.

@TheAnglingGlobetrotters 4 года назад
Not very informative in regards to thinking outside the box. If you limit your choices to the lures you've chosen for this video (which practically work in similar if not exactly the same scenarios) you'll be only successful in the days that crappie fishing is red hot. I've had days where no one on the lake was catching crappie with any of the above mentioned lures and then some, but when I started using a small suspending cranks and jerkbaits (megabass live-x smolt & Jackall Squirrell 61sp) I bagged out. Limiting your lure/bait selection will inevitably result in failure (read 0 fish in the boat)

@@elrobles15o12 .. Yes, along with hair jigs, flies, live worms, and more. With artificials, just stick with smaller ones under 1.5 to 2 inches. One inch is even better.
