This is my town. My sister was murdered when I was young. Its brutal on these streets.... I hope they cover Agnew Johnston in this one. I am a white man. I can tell you FOR SURE this place has rampant systemic racism towards our Nishnawbe brothers and sisters. Hopefully some more exposure will lead to positive change.

I live in Thunder Bay. I’m English/Italian. But I have been mistaken for being Ojibway my whole life. I look more Aboriginal than most people from our local reserves. Every First Nation person I meet asks me what reserve I’m from. Therefore, I can confirm the racism. I was called a Bogan and picked on as a youth because people thought I was “native”. I left TBay after high school to get away from racisms. Went back at 35 and since then (10 years now) the racism is so thick that it caused me to be depressed and feel like the city is hopeless despite its good qualities. Looking “native” and not being First Nation has given me an opportunity to see both sides of the racism here. People who know my heritage will be racist around me about “natives”, people who think I’m “native” will be racist towards me, and people in between are either defeated by the toxic racist culture or are angry. Toxic all around effects of racism. Thanks for doing the doc and I can’t wait to watch it!

I'm excited but anxious. I am an Anishinabekwe; born and raised in Thunder Bay. I've encountered Racism firsthand here in Thunder Bay and Across Northern Ontario. Just a few weeks ago, in an anonymous letter to residents of Ignace, I was referred to as a "Squaw"- it went on a rant about Indigenous people in the most disgusting, hateful manner. ANONYMOUS, mind you. Miigwetch for creating this documentary special. It is so very very REAL. Miigwetch

It will be interesting if they dare touch on things from more than one side. Hopefully this leads to more resources to surrounding areas to provide help to those who need it. So many people are falling through the cracks, end up in Thunder Bay and overwhelm it's resources.

Thunder Bay is my home, i am part native but don’t look it and i can tell you there is systemic racism here. See, when you don’t look native people feel a lot more comfortable speaking derogatory about native people in front of you and to you. I have heard some pretty brutal comments, many from cab drivers. The racism here is quite prevalent, through all walks of life. The real problem is that police have power over peoples actions and lives and there is a lot of racism in the police department. Not all the cops are bad but enough. My ex-husband was arrested once, he is part native and looks it. He was inside a bar and they came in and arrested him for something that happened earlier and elsewhere, he went outside with them and was handcuffed but would not get into the cruiser because they would not tell him why he was under arrest so they kept kicking him in the back of his thighs. He wasn’t violent, he just stood against the cruiser and would not get in until they told him why he was under arrest. So they pepper sprayed him. Then he got in the cruiser, and once inside it he asked for their badge numbers they laughed and said “ i’m number “ and “i’m number 2”. He never made a complaint because he felt there was no point. This is really a minor thing compared to many other stories to be honest but it doesn’t feel minor when it’s someone you care about. Then my husband and i and our children had rented a house from my parents, we moved out of town for a year then came back. A native man had rented the house while we were gone, we heard he sold drugs but he was nice enough and never gave my parents any problems so who cares. One night my husband was watching a movie in the living room, the younger kids were sleeping, and i was stripping old wallpaper from one of the bedrooms. Suddenly there was pounding at the door, it was the police, we sat quietly and ignored it, my husband wanted nothing to do with them after the last time he had been arrested by them. We did not realize the back door was unlocked and they came right in through there and tried to say they received a call about a woman screaming for help out the door or window or something. It was a complete fabrication. I told them so and they were very insistent that they received a report of a woman screaming for help. Then just 2 or 3 minutes later an undercover officer came in, i knew he was undercover because he had long greasy hair and a bunch of tattoos and he came up to me and said “where’s A--- M---?” This was the native man that had lived there when we were out if town. I told them i had no idea where he was, which i didn’t, he had moved out the month before and we moved back in. Funny how they supposedly received a call about a woman screaming for help but came in looking for a suspected drug dealer. So they made up a story or had someone falsely call in with this made up story about a woman screaming for help so they could have an excuse to come inside our home without a warrant to arrest a native man they believed was selling drugs. Nice one, right?

As well as compassionate agency to monitor the imagery since the police can't be trusted. Concerned citizens need to collectively defend and advocate for the first Nations people there. Need to start a big campaign to increase awareness. Expose the apathetic Police for what they are and provide means for resources to defend the indigenous people when the time comes for Justice for an adequate police investigation and bringing the guilty parties to swift and fair punishment.

The police will come after you if have any record with them, and maliciously attack you (and your family) if they think you did something wrong. I was ripped out of my house at 3a.m , 2 days after baby was born...tired, watching gameshow network with no clothes on...slammed into a snowbank, cuffed and taken to Balmoral for suspicion os stealing navada tickets from Oliver Rd convenience store a few hrs earlier...🤨 I was a known criminal, I did do bad things, I get that. But the cop came to my house and himself id me as the culprit. Had to go to court and i the end, cameras were too shotty to see who it was (wasn't me) but the cop gets off with no problems...

Thunder Bay was a great place to grow up in, friendly, generous and community oriented. We always saw the drunk native sleeping on a corner but they spent most of their time on the reserve so no one cared. In the 1990’s the Federal Govt. rather than fix up northern Indian communities brought them all into Thunder Bay and turned the city into a reservation displacing the long time residents. Muggings and robberies jumped and the police had their hands tied by social justice warriors because 95% of the crime was caused by Indians. You don’t know the history of TB so don’t criticize before you learn. It is so ugly now that I have not even visited in 15 years and I love my home town and always believed I would finish my life there just like my ancestors.

@@deewalsh3029 Do you know what systemic racism means? Systemic racism (also known as institutional racism) is a concept whereby the social structures produce inequalities based on racial discrimination. Racialized people thus face challenges due to racism from both individuals and institutions (health, education, penal system, etc.). Systemic racism is a concept different from that of individual racism. Your whole system is corrupt in TB You felt this was an attack on you personally. Your stance is part of the problem and I'm pretty sure that falls under a privileged category. Your family and native families did not have the same starting points. Tell me how your family would fair under these generational traumas You did not have 7 generations of your children forcibly taken. You did not have your family forced into a reserve system where it was a crime to speak your own language and practice your traditional ceremonies and ways of life or have a livelihood. You benefit from this system of oppression currently. The degradation you see being played out on the streets of TB. These are the results of Canada's colonialism that never ended. These kids were starved raped beaten killed in these institutions (Residential schools)and your town is doing it on your streets not in a residential school setting on your streets and it's a two-way street in your mind? The colonial system is alive and well in TB

@@deewalsh3029Very well said, I believe in seeing people as individuals too. I just watched the Thunderbay documentary and I feel like it was presented sensationalized and one sided. It seemed like an agenda was being pushed. I treat police and encounters individually and don't believe in the systemic racism or the serial killer or the vigilantly theories. No foul play means just that. All large towns and cities have their issues. I completely agree with you, just because I'm white doesn't mean I'm responsible for anything based on my skin colour. In closing, I knew nothing about Thunder Bay and looking at it on the map, I thought it would've been further north than it was.

It's such a bloody mess up here and it use to be a nice safe city. I was never a racist before but now I am pissed off that they call us all racists. I would love to hear from the police, firefighters and paramedics what is really going on around here but once again we would be called racists. I don't even care about the word racist anymore because they throw it around so freely. I went to high school in thunder bay because I had no choice. We have no high schools in the reserves in northern Ontario. Because of that, so many youth 13-18 have no choice to leave their family & homes behind all to get education. During my time in thunder bay, I've been raped, a victim of racism multiple times, police brutality, a starlight tour, attacked for the color of my skin. All of this led up to me dropping out of high school because it was too much. Thunder bay has so many issues that are never fixed. Most of which are the thunder bay police. So many of my peers were too afraid to call the police when they needed help because they were scared to be thrown into the river. There were so many talks going around that the police were the ones throwing all the youth in the rivers & I believe that. During my starlight tour the police taunted me about leaving me in the middle of nowhere or just throwing me in the lake & that nobody would care. I was fortunate enough to find shelter & have someone come pick me up. I honestly believe the thunder bay police have everything to do with all the deaths of the indigenous youth that went to MY high school.

I saw the old white lady there off to the side...she didn't us people around her home...again I was in public area walkway.. the 2 cops told me I had to move on or I would be taken in charged with trespassing. I was alone and felt afraid. I left knowing that if I stood up for myself I would be beaten or charged for something. I had kids at home...this was in the afternoon. I was sober. I can’t wait to see this. I’m from Thunder Bay and as a white man I have never had a problem with any natives, on the contrary. I grew up with them in a smaller northern Ontario town , went to Catholic school with them, played hockey and use to go to the reservation to play all the time when I was a kid and never had any problems whatsoever and the natives never had any problems with white people in town but that was a very different time. Alcohol and drugs in my opinion are behind the vast majority of these murders. I see a’lot of native men intoxicated and high frequently and during the day and it breaks my heart. Violence is very prevalent in these indigenous social circles, especially when alcohol and drugs are ubiquitous. The Thunder Bay police? Cover up? Racism? I don’t know about any of that and couldn’t make a objective opinion on the matter. My advice for a good life is don’t drink, don’t do drugs and believe unto the Lord Jesus Christ and everything else will taken care of itself. God bless our native brothers and sisters and let justice be done.

We have to find ways to come together and learn from each other, and this racism, it goes both ways people, I can't tell you how many times I have experienced racism from Native people. Now these cops that are accused of being racist, does that mean that every single cop is a racist, I don't believe that, just like saying every white person is a racist. Don't tar us all with the same brush, because we are not all the same. Peace everyone, let's start thinking of ways to share OUR tradtions and cultures with each other in a kind, loving, peaceful way. The issue here is systematic racism which has little To do with the Thunder Bay Police Department. However the people who hide behind the scenes; like Trudeau and his henchman and the rest of the snake politicians , they want you to believe it’s a policing issue. They are picking on Thunder Bay specifically so they can distract us all from what I believe the real issue is and that stems back to the residential schools. If you pay attention to what happens in the states whenever their governments want to bring in new legislation they generally find a targeted state to pick on and they try to provoke a race war. It’s generally terrorist groups like BLM and Antifa that are in the centre of it all. Well this is what they do in Canada they make it a race issue using the native people. There is no doubt our media and newspapers and activist here domestically create divide amongst white people and natives but for someone who grew up in the area I can tell you racism isn’t the main issue here and far from it. People are generally too busy to be racist. I am not denying that it exist , it does but that’s not why people are turning up dead and that’s what this documentary is trying to tell us. It’s false! Natives have been deprived of normal society since the residential schools. The system changed for them and they were basically forced to live in the back country of any civilized community and for decades the government (not the police) did a good job and educating Canadian Europeans that natives were bad people and different than the rest. But to blame the under staffed and paid thunder bay police for the governments issue is nothing more than an attempt to distract you from what is truly happening and that’s systematic racism to the top levels of our government. It’s easy to blame the police they are out there in their fancy decked out cars and tactical uniforms that resembles a working arm of the government but most cops are too over worked to be strategically working against indigenous people and too under staffed in their specialized units to be thoroughly investigating things properly. The chief and his management group all follow orders from the top chain which is the mayor who follows orders from the provincial government (essentially) and I can ensure you all decisions reach the top of the food chain and the answer gets passed down again. I find it funny how the chief and mayor get wrapped into this but no one above them. Again just talking heads having to jump on the sword to save face of the upper echelon of the government. This is typical. It’s all smoke and mirrors though and this is why you never see charges stick - it’s because they are generally fabricated and allegations that hold no evidence. It’s not because they are protected it’s simply because they are innocent. They are only charged for propaganda purposes. They want to sell you a lie and distract you. It’s unfortunate that people actually bye what they are selling and some go out of their way to create documentaries on it with very little truth. The cops aren’t choosing not to investigate a death properly. They are simply just over worked and under staff. I’m not doubting that some of them are taking short cuts and probably could be doing better but I don’t think this is because they are racist but that’s what they want to sell you. It’s because they are burnt out under laid and over worked. They are not supported with what they need by our government. This is done on purpose because the people who make these decisions to give cops more money and man power refuse to do it so these other problems occur and once they occur the same people can turn around and blame the police. I know it’s confusing but this is how it works. The facts are : These deaths are in a lot of cases suicides and misadventures. That’s the truth. There isn’t serial killers drawling them it’s a broken system that’s killing these people. They are depressed because they have had all their traditions stripped from them by our government and left to survive on their own. They are fed money to pay them off to keep them quiet but by giving them money it’s made them dependent on the government. This is exactly what they want to do to all of us now like Klause Schwab says “you will have nothing and be happy”. The majority them are deprived from alcohol as a lot live in remote communities that don’t allow drinking. When they come to Thunder Bay either on a court order or for shopping and/CLE they generally use their government paycheques to get liquor and then find themselves up to no good once intoxicated. The crime rate is currently spiking because while these sort of documentaries are destracting you and your local news channels are pulling the curtain over your eyes. The government is making it easy for the black street gangs from Toronto to sneak into the city to traffic young girls and sell drugs. It’s a port city therefore it will always be a city that holds interest to the mafia other organized crime groups and our corrupted government. They are mostly all on the same team. The problem is bigger just think outside the box and don’t allow yourself to get distracted by everyone who is trying to earn a buck off this false narrative!
