Experimenting with kids'crayons and textured surfaces to create interesting patterns to stitch into. I'll be using these to make some of my squares for the Great Big Little Stitchery Swap, but you could use the same idea in other projects, such as snippet rolls or fabric journals.
Let me know what you think, and if you try this idea, I'd love to see what you create :)
Here's my linktree, where you'll find links to the Arty Farty Annie Group on Facebook and our free Discord community - pop in and say hi, meet lots of lovely creative people, share ideas and show us what you're making -

Love this Annie lovely results. Learned this as a child we used old pieces of bed sheets and did rubbings off the flagstones then stitched. I was lucky to have had a very creative mother and grandpa with lots of patience. Cheap and easy way of adding colour and texture to fabrics and paper endless possibilities. x 💐

Thanks Jen and what a lovely memory - funny enough I was thinking about flagstones yesterday, in fact I've been looking for textures everywhere since doing this! As you say, SO many possibilities :) xo

Thank you so much for taking us along in your explorations. I remember reading about how women would use crayon to color fabric during the Depression years of the 1930's. I've never tried this technique, but now I may very well give it a go!

Tanks for watcing Sue, I'm glad you enjoyed it, and how interesting that people used crayons on fabric during the Depression - necessity is the mother of invention as they say. I love the flour sack fabrics they used as well, we didn't have that here, they look wonderful :)

I love this idea. Crayons ordered! They are so cheap it’s definitely worth a go and I don’t get out my embossing folder stash often enough! 😊

Oh Helen you won't be able to stop once you start, especially if you have embossing folders to place with. It's only occurred to me today that I could make words from diecut letters and take rubbings from those, or any other diecuts come to that - if you have embossing folders maybe you have dies as well. oooooh excited squeak I have even more ideas to play with now. Have fun and please do share some pics of your experiments, I'd love to see :)

Interesting you should do one of these videos, because I was, recently, watching someone else use crayons on fabric to create shapes to then slow stitch around and it really peeked my interest. Your idea of using texture plates, embossing folders and stencils opens up a whole new world of possibilities. I will definitely be having a go. I really like your colour swatches and look forward to seeing the wonderful stitchery swaps you will create from them :)

Thanks Susan - yes I've seen people drawing some lovely images to quilt around, there's such a lot of scope in this technique, I have some more experimenting to do for sure. I'm on the second square using the pieces I made in this video, it's really fun to just take your thread for a walk around the different patterns and follow the colours which are already there, no real thought needed but very absorbing, which is perfect for me! :)

Glad you liked it!! It was very easy and satisfying to do, took me right back to doing rubbings with crayons on huge sheets of newsprint when I was little - I'm looking at textures everywhere now, wondering how they would work as rubbings :)

So very nice! Other folks have stated that there is a soy oil based and a wax based crayon. The wax based like Crayola's seem to work better. I wonder if wax based color pencils would work? I enjoy that we, your fans who are crazy about you, can actually feel your enthusiasm and giddiness thru your voice, even when your sweet face is not on camera. Sending good wishes from south Texas. 💜
@artyfartyannie
@artyfartyannie 10 месяцев назад
Aw thank you so much, that's really sweet of you to say, I'm blushing now! :) Aha yes that makes sense, I haven't tried it with other crayons, might try it with some ancient oil pastels I have stashed away as I think the colours would be more vibrant. I'm sure it would be worth a try with wax-based coloured pencils, surely they'd work in a similar way. I think if it's for things that aren't going to be wash and especially if you're not worried about lightfastness or longevity, then any way of adding colour to fabric that doesn't make it difficult to stitch into is work trying out. I love using Inktense pencils on fabric, they work beautifully (you can just let them do their thing, or use Aloe Vera Gel instead of water to activate them for more control). Oh I just love how we all inspire each other and share ideas, it makes me very happy xo

Can i use old caryons😊
@artyfartyannie
@artyfartyannie 10 месяцев назад
I would say this would be a perfect way to use old stumps of crayons Judy - apparently Crayola crayons are made of paraffin wax and colour pigment, so I can't guarantee that it will work as well with crayons made of other materials, such as soy wax, or less pigmented ones. I would say just experiment on scraps of fabric - use cotton so you can set the iron temperature high and just try it. If it's for slow-stitched pieces that are purely decorative and aren't going to be washed I can't see that you can go too far wrong quite honestly. Please do share some pics if you have a go, I'd love to see them - links to the FB group and Discord community in the description box if you haven't joined already :)
