Following along with Christine Oakley's Dictionary of Stitches series (linked below), I'm creating my own version, using vintage fabrics, threads, trims and buttons, along with embroidery transfers and books from the 1930s and a 19th century book to make my cover.
I've gathered all of my supplies, now it's time to prepare my pages and get stitching!!
The video is time-stamped, so you can skip to the bit you want to watch :)

So wonderful to see what you’re creating - just love your approach and the book you will be using and such a good idea to prepare the pages as you go. It’s going to be a masterpiece and such a lovely keepsake of times gone by. Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡

Thank you so much for the inspiration Christine and for all the incredible vintage goodies - it will be such a joy to use them and work with and celebrate all these lovely things that have been held in the hands of some of the stitchers who came before us, I hope I will be able to do them justice xo

Annie, your ideas are fascinating, and these materials are just amazing! Your stitchery book will be kind of like an album, honoring the past in the nicest possible way: by learning something that you can carry on into the future. And you’re encouraging others to learn along with you. Bravo! I can imagine the women who owned and cherished these threads and textiles, smiling over your shoulder to watch this idea coming to life. They would be so pleased that you love and will use these beautiful things. Cheers from Lynn in Hallsville, Missouri USA

Halloooo, darling friend! What a treasure trove of vintage deliciousness, Annie! So wonderful to hear your enthusiasm for this project - I am excited to watch your progress. (I do envy you that remarkable book! What a treasure.) This is going to be fun! Love and Bless xoxo

Thank you so much! Lindsey, it will be good to know you're enjoying it alongside me :) Ah yes, I have a lot of lovely old books, I can't resist them - some of them, like this one, I buy specifically to use for arty-farty projects, but then it's still difficult to butcher them. It's perfect for this project though I think xo

Oh, those transfers! And the magazines! That book cover is perfect for your stitch dictionary. I love that frontspiece too. You're going to have a lovely book in the end.

My mother had an embroidered/applique mending bag, and it had wooden handles, semi circle shaped and the handles were sewn in by securing them between the bag and the lining.

Oooh Kate that sounds like a very similar idea to the one I have the transfers for doesn't it? I will do a google search I think, see if anything comes up, I'd love to have some kind of a picture of how it should look, it would be wonderful to try and recreate one wouldn't it? :)

Thank you so much Liz - I have goose pimples whenever I thnk of this project, the beautiful materials I'll be working with and all the people before me who stitched those pieces, squirrelled away the threads, scraps and buttons, flicked through the magazines and stashed the embroidery transfers, just like we would do today. It's going to be such a joy to put them to good use :)

Thank you Candice, yes I have maybe got a bit carried away with all the supplies - I will thoroughly enjoy using them, but it definitely doesn't need to be this complicated and you could do the whole thing just on plain linen for example, that would look amazing and possibly be more useful as a reference tbh. Having said that, I do tend to get carried away and I will so enjoy working with these beautiful things that so many other stitchers before me have held in their hands, gives me goose pimples just to think of it :)

Oh my gosh! You are so very inspiring! I absolutely love EVERYTHING that you put on this video!!! Thank you! I look forward to watching and learning and hopefully doing something myself. I'm a beginner but I have been collecting old vintage items like you have. Just need to start. 💜

Thank you so much Liz - oh I do hope you'll get started soon and enjoy using the vintage items you've collected. I was procrastinating for ages before starting on this, I think because I couldn't decide how it was going to go together in the end, it became a bit daunting. Eventually, I just had to jump in and start, and it definitely helps to have Christines series to follow along with and build my book around. I would say if you're hesitating - just jump in, pick one little piece of fabric and do the first stitch, you could just do all the stitches on separate pieces and decide how to put them together later. Please do feel free to share what you're making in our Discord community or Facebook group, links are in the description box :)

Thank you - you should go for it! You definitely don't need this much stuff to make a dictionary of stitches - it's lovely to have them, but you could make it a lot simpler and it would still be lovely as well as a really useful exercise. As Christine says in her videos, you could do all of the stitches on one piece of fabric, as a sampler, that would be wonderful too :)

Hello, I am really excited to come along with you on this project. What are the size of your pages?
@artyfartyannie
@artyfartyannie 3 месяца назад
Thank you, I'm so happy you're going to join me! The salvaged old hardback book cover I want to use for my finished book is approx. 18.5 x 27.5 cm, so I cut and folded my pages to be just slightly smaller than that. If you don't want to use an old book cover, you could make it any size you want and create a cover to fit later on when you're finished - I would be happy to do a tutorial later about creating covers with card and fabric if anyone would find it useful. Please do share some photos of your work as you go along, I would love to see - links to our Discord community and Facebook group are in my linktree in the description box :)
