CRAZY ANGRY INLET EATS MIDNIGHT EXPRESS! | ROUGH SEAS | Boats at Jupiter Inlet
What could this captain have done differently?
Who handled it the best?
This is only 1 of 5 videos from the craziest day I have ever filmed, Make sure to Subscribe.
The strong current was ripping leading several boats to broach over and almost sink while crossing the bar and entering the inlet in rough seas. Watch as these boats battle angry wave after angry waves. This is why I think Jupiter Inlet is more Dangerous than Haulover Inlet. The sandbar may not be as big as Haulover but the conditions and Jupiter Inlet can get really tough.
All kinds of boats in Jupiter, FL Palm Beach County transiting one of the most dangerous inlets in Florida. These boats can get themselves in trouble easily if they don't use the correct speed and choose the right lines at Jupiter Inlet. Some weekends there are more awesome boats going in and out of Jupiter Inlet than a boat show. Enjoy the video and don't forget to hit that like button to support the channel.
As always, thank you for viewing! If you enjoy the content, hit the subscribe button. It helps me film and produce these videos. Got many more on the way!

Those ugly Cat's, like that Freeman, slice through these waves like they're nothing. They're ugly but if I got a boat that's what I'd get. They are so stable and so smooth in all types of water, and probably more fuel efficient. Now I'm not a boater, but that's the impression I got from all your vids I've binged over the last few days.

Usually the stuffing happens so fast it’s over before anything can be done, into the wave and out again, but that bow wouldn’t come up. It looked almost like the boat synced with a standing wave. Do you get standing waves at the mouths of these inlets? Is that even plausible? Still-extraordinary footage!

I'm an ignoramus when it comes to boating, but I'm oddly addicted to these videos. However, we're all familiar with "small craft advisories" and it's makes sense that a small boat and big waves can be a recipe for disaster. But, what I find interesting is in some of these videos, it seems the larger (or funky-shaped) boats are actually more prone to going Gilligan's Island than are the much smaller sport boats. Obviously, I know nothing of watercraft, but I love anything nautical. Heck, I just modded my entire bedroom into a total nautical theme! ⛵

When running with the waves, trim the engines up, increase throttle as the boat heads down a wave to lift bow and don't run straight down the race of the wave, turn 20 degrees to increase the relative length of the boat in relation to the wave period. Also don't buy a boat with a turned down bow, you don't see any of these in Northern Europe, you'd sink 10ft from the dock!

As with most of these "weekend captains", this guy just can't figure out when to add or back off on the throttle. For those learning here's a tip: if you're on top of a big breaking wave add enough power to raise the bow before you plow into the next which will prevent submarining. Also, if you find the seas passing you you could lose control (you should try to outpace the following seas). If you are going over breaking waves too fast though you could hurt your passengers (or worse, the boat!) so back off on the throttles. The key is to stay slightly ahead of the seas and you'll know when to add power (avoid submarining) or throttle back to prevent the following wave from lifting the stern up potentially causing a broach (when the boat ends up beam to on the waves) as this is the most dangerous place to be for that's how rollovers happen!

Not necessarily, the boat wasn’t traveling on plane so it would’ve taken a second to get to plane speeds and it’s also probably a no wake zone because it’s an inlet so that’s just not possible really. If he was in a tirranna maybe he could pull it off but a midnight express is not capable of safely thrusting hard enough to trim up in a no wake, it’s way to heavy. And he could’ve easily sunk his stern with the height of those waves. He did nothing wrong as a boater, sometimes the ocean is just bigger and badder then boats lol

I am not an experienced boat man but I believe the helmsman should ride on the back of the wave. If the boat speed is faster than the wave it will surf down the front of the wave into the trough. Because of boat the length of the cigarette it appears to have had a following wave catch it and push it from behind. When the water in front of the boat resists the boat and the boat is pushed forward powerfully by the following sea, the boat will tend to release the energy by self steering, bow up and planing, turning sideways to port or starboard or worse still pushing the bow down. If you slow motion or pause the video, you can see the boat had a wave catch up and drive the boat forward and down into the wave in front. It went under because the wave behind lifted the aft end . Some helmsmen say go faster than the waves at all times with a following sea (waves coming hard and fast from behind.) I read another comment explaining to trim up first, that makes sense. We sometimes see that speed doesn’t always work at Haulover Inlet where the shallow water creates steep waves, what we call steep chop. It is simply the power of the water in a dangerous sea. Waves catching up with waves in front have a lot more energy. We call the rogue waves.

You're correct about the speed under these conditions. One needs to think of it that you're more or less surfing the waves - esp when you are not on plane. When the height of the peaks and valleys of waves is enough, you don't get the speed right, and you do not have the bow high enough, you can "stuff" the bow very easily. Esp on a boat like the M Express that bow that actually goes down at the bow. Fountains have the same situation, so it is important to keep the bow up. Done correctly (like the Ocean 1 Yacht), it really is easy peasy. Experience = confidence, I suspect. At least he got it up on plane, once he felt confident to do so, so the it self-bailed out the stern.

I was taught to get on the back of a wave and ride it in if you go over the wave that’s called broch . But I can certainly see when a wave is standing and not hardly moving forward that’s when you need to bow up and get going. But that’s where the danger lies so if you’re making forward progress on the back of a wave just be patient you’ll make it.

Although center consoles keep growing to impressive proportions, their bow height is limited by the captain’s viewing angle. Any higher and it would create a blind spot forwards. Not a desirable situation, especially for the majority of cc buyers who are pleasure boaters. This leads to big boats with a “downwards”-looking bow. Designers can make them look cool and bullet-like, but it can lend itself to situations like this one. One solution is to design for a flybridge-driven vessel, where visibility at the first level of the boat is of secondary concern and the bow can be raised up to a competent height. Another solution can be seen in the more utilitarian panga style boats, where the bow is raised to a more sea-worthy degree. However, this pang type of design is deemed ugly to the average pleasure boater and can indeed cut off front visibility. They are usually relegated to commercial applications with profesional- level drivers that are not as heavily dependent on a perfect front view.

I don't think this was a matter of trim but a mistake in last minute speed adjustment. If you watch closely, a few secs before goes under, the bow is trimmed up just fine. He's riding the back of the wave and then speeds up causing the boat to roll off the front down into the trough and smacks into the wave in front. Because of the wave crowding and length of the boat, the stern is now being pushed by the wave in the back and making the bow plow into the back of the next set. Good thing is he kept his cool and backed off allowing the bow to get out and not trying to power through. I seriously doubt this captain doesn't know that he needs to trim up or control his speed at Haulover or Jupiter Inlet. It was just a small mistake anyone could have made.

I noticed through haulover channels that 125% of the captains don't trim up for plane!!!

My opinion on the midnight express the nose is pointing down on rough waters they are not good my brother have one he's selling the boat to get something else

I do NOT have experience in waves so close together. I can't see where trimming the boat helps much at the slow speed to get the bow up. I'm a Southern Californian. I might have swamped it being to timid to throttle up. I do like reading everybody's solutions.

With outboards like that,by trimming the outboards up, it forces the stern down and bow up, even at lower speeds. This way when he hit that second wave, the bow lands on top of it, instead of plowing thru it. Even 2 or 3 degrees would have made a huge difference.

Maybe its a sampling bias or misperception on my part, but you never see those Freeman/WorldCat/etc cats getting in over their heads or getting boned. Is that because their captains are better or the boats are better at avoiding getting overwhelmed or both or what?

Trim up & work the throttles.

The Contender backed off the throttle too much and did not trim the engines up enough to bring the bow up higher, the bow got dragged under. Also, that turned down bow is a no go.

Give the Midnight Express a break. Difficult sea state wind and tide working against him and a short gap between waves. That boat is for high speed, look at the bow, he's always gonna cop a bit over the front in those conditions. He did fine.

As an inland Canadian in Northern Ontario, I think he went about 5 knots too slow. Instead of pushing through the waves, the waves were pushing him. But I’m kinda stoned, and what the puck do I know about boats?

I agree with you, I think that those that go out in these conditions without the basic life-jacket on are just arrogant and selfish. You don't use simple common sense and yet you expect others to have to put their lives at risk to come and rescue you and your toy.Take some personal responsibility people.You are not a big hero by not wearing a PFD ,you're a dork.

Yeah they’re not designed for big ocean. They’re just go fast boats for show and partying. Real fishing boats that can handle big seas have deep vees and flare to the bow.

It's all about trim and making sure your bilge pump is on 24/7
@terryfonz4603
@terryfonz4603 3 года назад
Deck water doesn’t go to the bilge if it does you have a very shitty design! Deck water drains overboard out of thru hulls above water line. Deck level is above water level so when waves come over the water drains overboard the bilge stays dry. This way you keep air in the bilge sealed from the upper level and never sink because of rough weather or rain!

@@terryfonz4603 anything above 25' maybe. But the boats that are sinking on videos aren't water tight. That's why they have a bilge pump . imagine being stuck in a heavy rain without one .

As the captain of the boat he should know his boat and what it can handle and don't be scared of the boat. Alot of mistakes happen because they get scared. A good captain always keeps his head on straight for the most part. Im a crazy captain heads on straight when family in the boat. But me by myself whole different story. Me personally full throttle all the way. My boat sinks its gonna float. So that fear is not ther. I know my boat literlly in and out. I rebuilt the boat. But anyway full throttle baby. Also Delaware has a nasty inlet too. One wave just sites ther do to cure t wave reachs 12 foot sometimes. Thanks all I know I got screws loose. Lol injoy
