OMG GIMMMIE The side hanging!!!! YES ED!!!! Please make this a thing. We have 2 5x5s and our game room is cramped. Absolutely need this! OMG love the insert for the topper block too. Doug we know you don't like it but we already have and own it. Would totally be interested in that too. This whole video makes me very happy.

I love my topper block. For our smaller space, no other storage method really makes sense even if it can be broken down when not in use.

Ed is awesome. What about making the Single Kalix, if you double it top to bottom it can be the side mounted unit, or two across side to side for player desks. One sku for the Holder and then different mount options???

Doug, you should invest in that thinner vinyl cover for the gaming surface; it'll be safer with all the spills you have at home, and will help us skip the brush/lint roller ritual before gaming.

The Kallax armor looks sweet. You could also make it so the smaller one until a kallax door. So you can use the space behind as well.

Love the outside Kallax Mag Rack. To secure the top of the rack, you could drill holes in the rack for the existing kallax hardware to screw through it. I've seen other hanging solutions for the side of the kallax that connect that way. Cloud Puncher Games' "Playmat Hero" comes to mind.

I really like the side mount idea, you just need a way to mount it securely to the side of something metallic/magnetic. Having a version wide enough for hobby shelves would be cool too, but I imagine that isn't ever going to happen.

It seems like the bigger options could be made by putting 2 of the modular ones together. You could just offer the small square one with lots of mount options and an easy way to expand horizontally and vertically.

I think they combine the side piece and mini mag rack. Offer the mag rack by itself (wall mountable) and then 2 attachment options. 1 - inside a KALLAX and 2 - side of a shelf. The side mount would be about half the height of the Ed's prototype, but maybe they could get a stringer to connect to mini mag racks vertically to be comparable in size to prototype. Ed's topper block addition is undervalued! I think that would be a huge hit. Store the accessories in the block in a closet while using it as a normal table, and pull out the accessories as you store toppers away in gaming mode. It's the most discrete option by far. Personally, I don't want my accessories mounted to a wall or on display on a shelf when I'm using my table normally. I want full stealth mode separate from gaming mode.

IKEA also have an insert with a door that you can add to a square of the Kallax. You could maybe make this fit on the same hinges. That way you could mount it at the front and still be able to use the space behind it.

if you add an option for bumpers on the side mount to accommodate for the small lip, then I feel it would also work for most bookshelves (particularly the Billy series from Ikea)

Wild totally off-topic idea - I would love accessories *just* for the accessory holder. Example - A pinboard so i can display my cool pins that can slot into the magnetic rail; finding spots where you can showcase pins not on a bag/shirt/etc is really hard and that'd be a cool center piece to be surrounded by accessories. A dice showcase that hangs on it would be cool too. I'm sure there's a few different ideas for accessory accessories !

Simplify the whole thing by using the small one as the modular insert. Single for the shelving system, side by side for the wide wall mount, and top and bottom for the hanger. One item for all 3 configurations, all you would need to offer are different hardware kits.

I have been storing my accessories on the side of my fridge. So long as they are attached vertically (sideways) they hang on like a champ.

First, I love the smaller logo on the sweatshirt vs the large logo name on the back. Second, for IKEA most boardgames use either a kallax or a besta, I personally use a besta for the width and also I can use long card board boxes that hold things like magic cards.

If you’re going to do Callax, consider a Billy (IKEA) bookshelf solution as well on the side. I know a lot of people who have Billy shelving in game rooms for books. RPG players who are not board game people won’t have Callax.

I think Ed missed a huge thing… all kalax units have screw holes in them for doors to be attached. The older expedits (the thing that was functionally the kallax before the name was changed) don’t have those screw holes, but the newer ones have them standard. You could make them into doors for them.

I'm so in for a under vault support for the long and or wide MGT. Such a concern of droop over time. Jackie mentioned via email it was being looked into. I seriously hope so, because some of the games we play, like Kingdom Death, have a lot of weight on the table. Beyond that, looking at the storage using the Topper Block, what I would love to see is something that slides in like that, but has the setup to hold the player boards like Ed came up with for the wall, but sliding down into the topper block. Would be a fantastic way to story the player boards when not using the topper block for the toppers.

As someone with too many board games, I'd love it if the shelf-sitter one didn't take up a whole shelf but instead clamped onto the side wall with rubber feet on the front and back face and was hinged so it swings out like a cabinet door. Accessories on the front, game storage behind. Cant wait to see what Ed does next!

If the rack isn't too heavy, for the side mount: make the "L" mount bracket smaller, and drill two holes in it. You can then sandwich the "L" bracket mount between the side panel and top panel. The Kallax (and Kallax clones) screws that secure the top to the side panel will hold it in place.

For the callax rack look into the cupboard doors they have. Then you can make a version that is a door attachment or is the door itself

Both Kalax options are good. One assumes there's an empty square, the other assumes the shelves aren't up against a wall or another shelf. Both have a market!

Could you just go with a vertical configuration for the side mount to make room for the hobby shelf? I guess the only concern would be weight causes it to slide down, but the bottom edge would keep anything from falling.

100% would buy the Kallax side mounted MAG rack or the topper block MAG rack. Both are beautiful. I'd head for the Kallax solution if both were offered, but only by a slim margin.

The "in-shelf" solution could be utilized for displaying miniatures if you create skinnier grooves and offer acrylic shelves so gamers could set the shelves at whatever heights they want. Then offer little Wyrmwood lazy susans to place IN FRONT of these shelves to display additional miniatures. Add LED lights to everything for showcase lighting.

The side mount one needs to be compatible with the sit-stand desk as well. I can see issues with side mount where the unit sits between a wall on one side and a door or another unit on the other side.

I would get the topper block insert. I (and thousands of other people) already have the block, so it's the simplest solution for us.

The side hanging rack should just be the top bracket, attachable bumpers, and spring clips that fastens to the existing kallax interior racks. If you can find a way to make the kallax racks interlocking on top and bottom with hardware, you can use the same product for both applications, making it way more versatile, customizable, and marketable. You could also find a way to attach the hobby shelf version with the same hanging bracket as well if you have furniture at different depths.

nerd, geek, dork: Ed had it backward, Nerd implies science/technology skills, Geek implies fandom, gamer, or other enthusiast. Dork just implies social awkwardness... and etymologically originates from a term for a whale penis (No, not joking). Since the words are all so close in meaning, there are regional & individual differences in how they are use; but I believe the above is *generally* consistent across most of the English speaking world.

Doug may not like the topper block, but it's a very important use case. As I said in comments on past videos, storage is a very personal thing. What works for one home will be a total non-starter for another. While the cost has put me off getting a topper block, I will certainly get one eventually. I like it better than the other solutions presented for my use case where I lack wall space. (I love art, and I like wall-mounting many things for ease of access and utility, but because of that combo I'm always short on wall space.)

seems like all you need is the small accessory holder with an ability to attach more to the bottom top and sides via some sort of bracket that attaches then together. then you could also just have an L shaped bracket that would attach to the top if you wanted to hang it on the side. one size that can grow to whatever size the customer would need. you could just sell a bracket that allows the unit to sit in the topper block too.

Idea for the Kallax and side mount. Have the side mount made up of 2 of the Kallax units one on top of each other attached to an add-on bracket. Also for the topper block people can just attach multiple Kallax units to a hobby board to make one.

Hinged rack face maybe if we are worried about losing shelf space? The topper block solution though clever does look like it would balance well as a stand alone accessory solution. Looks to be too potentially be too top heavy
