If the machine can use sensor data, it may be good to use hall effect or some kind of speed sensor and if the operation is on progress and the sensor detects the spindle isn't at speed, the program is halted.

I'm a software engineer, and it's comforting to see in other engineering aspects they also have 5x more people involved to fix an issue than "required". I don't want to ask the cost to have those 5 people working the issue (but i do understand the positives of that)

Also an SE... bear in mind that basically this is a choke point for the entire company; so whatever the loss is in terms of salary for Mike+Doug+Jason+Ian & whoever else they brought in is probably dwarfed by the loss in productivity for however many days that machine was down... not to mention the risk of cascading losses for the machine remaining down for an extended period of time. A rough equivalent in our world is if the entire database got deleted, including the scripts setting up the schema. Also though, the 4 people I listed above are all owners... which further changes the dynamic. Beyond their base salaries they have an incentive to get themselves involved in this kind of problem, tracking the overtime be damned.

Seems like a bad design because the force of the loading part puts the tension on the threads, not on shearing the bolt.

Also thread engagement length in soft material like aluminum or pot metal should be 2X diameter of the thread so the screw breaks, not the tapped hole threads. Those threads look like they were only engaged 1X the diameter.

But that's not what happened. The motor that moves the spindle assemblies is what pushed the threads out when the spindle made contact while not spinning. It was not the loading mechanism. Look at it operating, it's moving the whole spindle assemblies forwards and backwards at quite a high speed. I can see there easily being enough force available to strip the threads.

@@m00hk00h With proper thread engagement.... and lets be honest, proper cast iron ... when the spindle doesn't run, and the machine crashes, the thing that is supposed to break is the *wood*. Had the machine been properly designed, and the spindle malfunction happened (malfunctions happen to well designed machines too), they should have lost the part, not the machine.

If you got clearance. Have a local machine shop make a U shaped pice that bolts onto the three existing bolts and bolts on the inside and outside where you have more metal to drill and tap. From the looks of it you might have enough clearance to megdrill all the way through the center between the two rods and run a bolt and nut all the way through. Or fly me out for the weekend and I’ll do it.

If the vfd for that motor tripped out it will stop running. You might be able to look at the history in the vfd to see why it tripped.

Potmetal, the bane of everyone ever. One problem i see right away is that its a perpendicular bolt to stop the rotation... thats a lot of angled force in a... what, 1/4 UNC? im a metric kinda guy... anyway, there should have been a plate or something along the side to extend the anchoring, but it might be a clearance issue... i can't see it from here. Also a helicoiled thread is at times more sturdy than the original thread.

@wyrmwood I am looking at getting the mgt but one issue I heard was the middle toppers can slide if leaned on is there a reason why you don’t put rubber stoppers in the middle on both ends like you have in the corners for the end toppers? Also would it void my warranty if I added them?

I'm not an engineer, but I see two issues. First is a machine with a pot metal structure. Second, the the tension of that structure is placing shear stress on the bolts. If it weren't for the pot metal structure, the bolts would likely snap.

It’s easier to replace bolts than a broken structure like the base of the machine. This is why bolts are use like a fuse.

I was always told - there are two universal fixes: WD40 and Duct-Tape. If it is meant to move, and it doesn't, then the solution is WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't, then the solution is Duct-Tape! 🤣

From the looks of it the machine is creating vibrations over time those vibrations can cause the bult to loosen thus creating play between the bolt and thread, when the blade that was not spinning pushed on that hole because the metal is kind of weak it just exploded. an easy fix would be that every month or so go over the whole machine and re tighten any loose bolts

A month? Seriously? Soon as this broke and found the be a machine defect, it should have became a seller/manufacturer call for service and replacement either brought in, or repair tech brought in. This is industrial equipment and NOT your job to fix. This is a failure that should be manufacturer repaired and covered as it is a safety liability for not only your, but ALL of these machines they have sold. It would be one thing if it broke yesterday and after contacting the manufacturer, they gave you permission to do a recommended repair to either get up and running, or there was simply zero other way to produce what it did, but after a month you opened yourself up to many many warranty, safety and engineering knowledge risks by doing the repair yourself.

At 1:30 the problem stems from the part being cast Iron. Ir you replace it with a part made of high carbon steel, or just steel that can handle a little more abuse, it should work.

And if you want it to have a Failsafe, you can just "mill the top off" and make it so, that the new reinforced part has a part that fails at a specific force and can be changed within minutes.

seems like a VERY poor machine design as those fasteners are basically being loaded in tension and shear, I'd be curious if you could add a plate with some dowel pins to the side of that assembly to take that load off of the fasteners

Edit to add, Doug makes a fair point about breakaway being a feature within this assembly but you could add a plate to the side secured with 1/4-20's and at least not shatter the casting / strip out the fasteners.

Whats the benefit of using a helicoil over just using a larger bolt? You're still drilling and tapping a new hole. why not grab a bolt that fits the new threads? Of course you'd have to drill a larger whole in the other piece, but that shouldn't be a big deal.

With a decade plus in production maintenance I highly doubt your machine is cast from “pot” metal, cast iron is soft, your machine is more than likely cast iron or cast steel. The real issue is your using harder bolts than the material they are bolted into which is why it pulled the threads out instead of breaking the bolts. The bolts should be the fail point they are easy to replace when something like this happens.

This is just proof of how Wyrmwood is still an ignorant garage based company. After 20 years working in shops, I've seen it all, and professional companies in this situation would get on the phone and get the manufacturer out there ASAP with NEW parts and get them back up and running. Just food for thought people....
