40wpm? That's not terrible. I say this as a programmer that can easily do 80-100wpm. Most of your writing delay doesn't really come from the typing speed anyways, but from figuring out what you want to type.
@OMGclueless
@OMGclueless 5 лет назад
The problem with programming is you use a lot of random uncommon keys like square and angle brackets, curly braces, symbols like & and %, etc. I got an all-black keyboard without labeled keycaps when I was an edgy high schooler, and I quickly discovered I was not in fact purely a touch typist, and remembering which number the ^ and $ shift-keys were on was challenging, and I can't imagine the gestures for those symbols is easy to remember either. You just don't use them enough to be ingrained in working memory.

You don't need full VR, you can use it with a tablet strapped around your neck (have you seen the wearable tablet holder?). Another thing I was thinking is what if you had multiple monitors / tablets, and they were all synchronized with each other, you could be typing and stuff while in route to another screen. Also you could have a touch brail extension or something that lets you display information through touch, instead of relying on an eye piece.

I think this could have great application in gaming, especially VR gaming where you don't want to have to hold a controller or navigate a keyboard. Games in general aren't going to require you to use many keys though, so it would be an easy transition. The issue would be potential lag time or keystrokes not registering if done in quick succession.

Aoi Even someone with less severe impairments could benefit. I have tendinitis that makes use of a mouse painful and do CAD for a living, which means using an Intuos tablet. Works great as a pointing device, but the size and setup make it a pain to switch back and forth to a keyboard. I'm using a Razer Nostromo to have access to most keyboard shortcuts and a better scroll wheel, but typing text means setting everything else aside and hunching over to reach the keyboard (my back isn't a fan). I could see this being a much better option... if I could afford it.

i cut the nerves on my hand with a saw and typing is hard. using my thumb index and middle finger dont feel anything so i cant tell when theyre touching the keyboard. and me being an 80 plus words per minute user, this fucks me up hard. to the point i had to train myself to use the side of my middle finger and right index to compensate for the missing "keys" while 30-40 wpm is about half of my normal, being able to reliably type with one hand would help a lot. Maybe even make me better, type with one hand and use my good hand to do other stuff like messing around with a second pc or chugging coffee while i do some work. at almost 200 it seems expensive to me for now, but im cheap and arent TOO impaired to NEED it. but if it got a discount, an upgrade or i found it on sale, i think its a good deal considering gaming keyboards are of similar prices and they dont do anything other than make keys a bit more sensitive. Which does not help me at all. Either buy this or go back to single key typing.

Then it would be nice if you could just "type normally" whenever your hands happen to be in space. The arrow keys could be operated by lifting and directing the finger in the appropriate "arrow" direction. Bonus points, it could be linked up to a phone and used to translate Sign Language as well :)

I don't think i'd use it as a keyboard But a mouse? YES! Infact i've already come up with some new better gestures that would fit it for mouse use Like pulling back your index finger as if you were pulling a trigger
@R34L157
@R34L157 5 лет назад
I'm not a gamer but just imagined a first person shooter where you make a gun shape with your hand then raise your arm as if you were holding a pistol and that be a neutral spot where you can turn your hand left and right to change which direction you're facing, bob your hand up and down for kneeling/crouching and to move forward just move your first half a foot in infront to move and angle it to move diagonally etc. It would in a way solve the "walking problem" that VR has although obviously not as good as a desired "ready player one" solution. So basically a gyroscope and mid air up down left right x-y plane.. Hopefully that made sense to both fellow non gamers and gamers alike.

@@R34L157 That would suck, and wouldn't fit the ergonomic goal at all. Just incredibly tiring and wayyy slower than playing with a mouse and keyboard if you're fit enough to do that shit

How is that better than an a normal mouse click? pulling your finger back would still raise your knuckle to above your hand height when your hand is flat, same issue, and with repeated use would cause more strain as it uses a less utilized tendon and exasperates your palm muscle more, this is just by feeling the underside of the hand and doing this motion repeatedly, it's damn uncomfy for most people. Its not hard, you're not smarter than a team of designers 'already come up with some new better gestures' lol
@playerx4283
@playerx4283 4 года назад
@@R34L157 Probably the reason why they did it how they did it is not personal preference but the devices maximum of accurate tracking. They use acceleration sensors to detect the fingers movement. Now Acceleration isnt speed, so they can only detect hard positive or negative acceleration (starting to move your finger or stop abrupt). Thats probably why they chose the tapping on hard surface, its a hard deceleration. So just moving your finger backwards probably would be to spongy to actually have a accurate 'Now i want click' and 'Now i only move finger'. Nice idea though.
3 года назад
The primary usage for this is clearly Accessibility. For people with one hand or limited motion, this device is huge. I own one and learned how to use it and the quality is excellent. The future for AR / VR / glasses makes this much more appealing. If your phone is in your pocket, but your screen is on your glasses, then this becomes a very rational way to provide input to the device. It's a little difficult to learn, but no more obtuse than learning to touch type. As someone with multiple keyboards, it is possible to learn different keyboard layouts and keep them all in your brain.

I work on a large Cintiq tablet and using this, tapping directly on the tablet, instead of a keyboard off to the side sounds great. It probably defeats some of the purpose I'm sure, but seems like if you could have two at the same time would be nice for general typing. Maybe even splitting up the gestures between the two.

Cooooool. I have very little interest in VR, but this looks like it'd be useful to control stuff like an HTPC, where you do need to type, but not necessarily at high speed. Or for people who have a lot of trouble with the touchscreen keyboard on their phone, or teachers who want to operate the class computer while they're standing at the white board... it has a lot of potential applications outside VR.

Just - grabbed the newer TAP-XR bracelet for use with Apple Vision Pro. I’m tired of having to grab a BT keyboard and such.. or also have a trackpad (especially for MAC mirroring situations. This might be great in mouse mode. Combined with Apple Vision Pro…. this is just very cool. even for use in VR with various headsets. Faster than their internal laser pointer keyboards for sure… I also am amazed at how well your bring swaps sides if you change hands… Very cool .. AR/XR/VR adds a whole new use for these devices the Strap 2 or the XR (which is the one i got)

Thinking the same, too. Imagine, if you really only had one hand. I can totally see, how you would be way faster (and propably waaaayyyyyy more comfortable) typing one handed with that thingy, then an actual Keyboard. Plus, the Hand can stay where it is, to use it as mouse, which is quite a neat feautre, i'd say.

Using Swype, I can type pretty fast on my phone - almost as fast as I do with a keyboard and in some cases, faster. I experimented taking notes on my phone this year instead of on a laptop (helped by the fact that my laptop is dead and I can't afford to get a new one). I managed ok in most of my classes, but I found it was super easy to take notes in German on my phone - install the German keyboard and my note taking speed soared. I actually prefer to type up German papers on my phone and then move to my PC after to format/print - the phone keyboard is just easier to use for the special characters, rather than remembering the alt codes or using "insert special characters"

Wow, way to make blanket assumptions. I'm hardly the fastest typist and definitely not on a professional level, but I'm not bad. I don't remember what my score was when I took a typing test several years ago, but I remember my boss was impressed at the score. I almost never look at the keyboard when I type and I never think about the letters I'm typing unless it's a word I struggle to spell (everyone has mental hangups). I use a US keyboard. As it is, I'm finished with my German classes and don't have any more German classes left. I specifically said using Swype - which is an input method (at least on Android, I don't think it's an option on iPhones). If I type out the individual keys on my phone, my speed does drop significantly - at least by half.

This has benefits in multiple categories: One handed use Portable use Vr work environments Maybe even gaming I would love to give these a go since I plan to do more work outside of my normal desk setup and absolutely hate track pads but am not too thrilled about carrying a mouse. It has that added benefit of being a spectacle to anyone who notices I'm typing on nothing. As well when at home I could take advantage of owning a VR headset and having unlimited monitors for multitasking without having to try and figure out seeing my keyboard as well. Pretty niche benefits but I'd happily pay 50-100 bucks but not any more because it's very likely that I won't have the time to learn the keys.
