Meet a boisterous baker who makes authentic, Czech kolaches from scratch in Calvert, Texas. (#1121, 2/21/09) Jody Powers ZamykalKolaches.com 709 Main Street, Calvert, TX 77837 979-364-2386
What she bakes looks a lot like the old fashioned REAL kolaches that I remember from the Swobodas, Maseks and Otoupals from my childhood in Omaha. They also had them at the TWO Sokol halls that Omaha had.
My mom is a bit OCD indeed, but her attention to detail is what makes the Zamykal Kolache the most authentic Czech Kolache outside the old country. If you think she seems a bit crazy...try growing up with her. Again, thank you all for your comments and we hope to be seeing you at the store or shipping you an order soon!
I am so thankful my mom has gotten so many loving reviews from you. I remember my grandmother and her sisters up early in the morning making my great-grandma Zamykal's kolaches with boisterous yet loving care.
She was a hard worker can’t believe she did all that by herself. God rest her soul I wish that I met her and tasted those beautiful piece of art. Long live her memory. 🙏✝️
I was so sad to see her pass. Every sunday morning, my parents and I would go and get kolaches from her. She had the most amazing kolaches. Now that she has passed... they just aren't the same. The don't taste as authentic. But she was an incredible lady. If i could go back, I would relive every moment.
Texas food!!! It comes from the four corners of Earth!!!! To the unbeatable TexMex, to BBQ and smoked meats that fall off the bone, to the great food of eastern Europe, kolaches, sausages, pirogis ( they're not just from Cleveland or Pittsburgh), and to wash it all down, plenty of cold Shiner beer. Yes, this Texas Messican just loves it all!!!!
What a beautiful, talented lady. You can see she truly cares about the product and her customers. She knows the value and importance of making food fun and using old world techniques and recipes, handed down. And throw in a cute song, nice personality and a lovely personality with a tasty Kolache and you've got your day off on the right foot. Excellnt!
That's soooooo amazing! I'm 58 a Chef and I do graveyard shifts also. This is not an easy life and really takes so much love to be able to make great products for people. She's amazing!!! Great job! God bless you and your family!
Occasionally I take Hwy 6 from Hugetown to Waco and I have seen her doing her routine as I was speeding by. As I am a photographer, I have thought of stopping by picking a few of these goodies for the road and snapping a few pics of her dancing away........think she'd mind?
cameraman655 she has sadly passed ..your chance is gone! I never got to go there either I just found her on here and I didnt live close enough to her shop at the time but I'm planning to go to Rosenberg Texas there is a bakery there that uses a recipe passed down from generations back! Have a great day!
Just saw this video and immediately goggle the place, unfortunately they are permanently close, hopefully I could find something good like this close to me.
So sad she passed my voyfriend and I always buy kolochis in all the small towns we drive thru. This made me cry I'm a proud Texan and love our Heritage.. We would have loved to stop in here and meet this wonderful woman and have a delectable kolochi!!
My Grandmother and Aunts used to make these for every family occasion and this brought back wonderful memories. I was looking up on line how to make them and came across this video. I am so sad I don't have their instructions for how to make them My Grandmother was 100% Czech- and made them just like this. If only you were in WA State, I could come visit your store! I'd kill for your recipe,,, just the dough even!
Why kolaches have not replaced donut in America is a mystery to me! It is one of those ethnics foods that everyone loves the first time they try it. So many flavors...so little time. Thanks Grandma

Gosh those looked good. I am so sorry she has to work so many hours. Ms. Powers, why don't you list your pastry on ebay, you can add the youtube video to your ads too and I bet you would sell a lot, you can send from Texas by priority mail most places in usa in 2 days.
Dang it I was close to Calvert the other day!!! Grrrr. Wow, those look AWESOME! Love her attitude. Wonder what vitamins she takes....I need her kinda energy!!!!!!
great looking kolaches, I will have to make the trip to Calvert soon . . . I have eaten kolaches since I was a kid but never seen 21 differ flavors . . . I may stay all day!
A+ on the sanitation. I love the acrylic box at the end of the video. Customers get excited for such treats, but there are too many people that cough and sneeze on open food. I would feel good about eating there. Also, send flyers to Texas A&M. There are tons of office people that would place orders. That means you will have to get a driver! This is big!

@apachejunction1 Every family has its own twist on a recipe. Its what you grew up with that comforts you. But my neighbor makes KILLER kolaches my family loves.
+Vera Algiere And how are they different? Texas has the largest Czech and Slovak communities in the US, I suspect that there are more that a few bakeries in the Lone Star State that would make you change your mind. This is like saying you can't get "real" Chinese food in San Francisco or "real" Italian food in New York City, of course you can.
+cameraman655 I know I have real meal everywhere. This Kolache have much dough around- like this we call- buchty. Maybe you can look on this web site and see how look real kolache. I am sorry for that but you will see different. I tried kolache in baton Rouge and it was dry dough with little filling inside. www.toprecepty.cz/fotky/recepty/0022/kynute-kolacky-staroceske-57654-413-295-exact.jpg
Vera Algiere I will agree that in most convenience stores/gas (petro) station, the Kolache are bland, however bakeries like Solvacek's, Czech Stop or Village Bakery in the town of West and many more throughout Central and East Texas might convince you otherwise. Can't speak for Baton Rouge or the state of Louisiana but Cajun interpretation of the Kolache is likely very different than Texas. C'mon down sometime and give a Tex-Czech Kolache a try.
+cameraman655 He obviously has no idea what he's talking about. There are plenty of VERY authentic Czech/Slovakian kolaches and bakeries in Texas. He's just talking out of his ass like a russian. "In mother Russian, heights are afraid of YOU!"
I don't really think there are "Real" kolaches... just as any traditional/artisan food, they change from place to place even in the same country! "oh, these aren't real, they're just a copy" is a rather vage statement...
