The Deuce and a Half Parking brake explained.
A normal brake becomes abnormal when put in a military vehicle and it's super simple but ready to take anything the military and the battlefield is willing to throw at it.

My dad had a '62 GMC Flatbed that had an e-brake like this. I was in it with him once when we had to use it. We weren't going very fast, but he had to pull on it with all his might. If you've ever smelled burnt brakes or clutch it filled the cab the that accrid smoke. LOL we survived but I'm glad for today's e-brakes.

I've seen aftermarket disc brake setups like this for off road trucks. The idea being that if you have aftermarket brakes you can go to an off road Park that requires a parking brake. Also since it's braking force is being multiplied by the ring and pinion you should (theoretically) have greater braking force from it.

Thanks, BC. I have been mourning the absence of Deuce videos ... actually watching Extreme 4x4's reruns on PowerNation. Only a placebo since they are mini-trucks in comparison. Always reminds me of ocassionally driving a Duece in Vietnam. Take care.

My ford dump truck had the same style parking brake and I had the same thing happen to me when I bought my deuce. I left the parking brake on for the whole ride home but it still works

Have you inspected the shoes? When a parking brake is left on while driving, the heat usually causes the linings to crack and separate from the backing plate. On a passenger car or truck, the parking brake does function as an emergency brake. It's incredibly weak, but at least it's something. Down shifting and using the parking brake can slow you down without having to ram something. You very well may find that only a small piece of friction material is left on those shoes, or that none is left at all. It may hold the vehicle from rolling, but it won't be grabby enough on a very steep hill or in an emergency. And to be honest, brakes should be taken apart and be cleaned/lubed/adjusted every 2 or 3 years regardless just to make sure everything is free and wears evenly. As a professional auto tech, I saw countless brakes which would have lasted longer if they got a little TLC midway through their life. I mean, the inner pad would be to rivets while the outer pad had 3/8ths left on it, and the inner pad had destroyed the rotor. A mid-life CLA service would have kept that wear even. :/

Had a GMC Topkick like that as well, that had hydraulic brakes as its normal system. Always tested it on a hill once a week or so to make sure it was adjusted. Even then I would chock it when parking on hills just because I didn't fully trust it compared to the air brakes on some of the other trucks.

@mannys9130 yeah I checked the shoes and they look a little glazed and worn down but I’m sure they are the original shoes in there but my deuce is just used strictly on my farm and always parked in gear with the wheels blocked so I’m not too concerned. But I work as a heavy equipment mechanic for the past 10 years and funny that some of the 100ton haul trucks we have only have a 3/8s bolt that holds the parking brake so if you loose brakes you also loose steering and that 3/8s bolt sheers off moving over 5mph so your basically screwed

I'm from Boston and I'm living in Arizona. I call it a grease fitting, as in "Make sure you lube all the grease fittings at every oil change." Never heard it called a grease nipple, but I refer to the actual valve as a grease zerk as in "Now that the ball joint is in, you install the grease zerk into the bottom."

I've got an '87 GMC/Wayne school bus with a similar system. So bizarre the first time I saw it, but it's nice that it is separate from the regular brake system.

WOW that is a strange parking brake Now this would be funny Take it to a shop and tell them you have a problem with your parking brake and they look at it Later you come back and find they replaced all the brakes but have no clue why the parking brake still does not work LOL

Hi, the UK Land Rovers had this transmission brake. I had a 1973 Range Rover with it. I brush painted it NATO green. Gearbox was a 4 speed manual shift with overdrive. Perkins 4 cylinder 236cu.in. diesel motor. I could start off in any gear. Max revs was about 1850rpm. It had one amazing safety feature: you couldn't use a cell phone in the cab while driving. No point, was impossible to even hear the phone ringing, never mind talk! Engine noise.

Hey BC I just got my Blackhawk! Ergo Grip from Jo Bob Outfitters today. I really like the feel of it in my hand. I especially like the Faux Godzilla skin texturing. I plan on mounting it to my 16" Carbine using the Jo Bob trigger creep adjustment grip screw.

Your’s is topped out(not adjusted properly). That bolt under the twist handle should be half way. You need to take the slack out by adjusting the bolt under the truck. Also, they can freeze so if your truck sits for long period of time don’t use it(Caulk the tires instead).
@deuceandguns

Yep, but as long as it still works it's way down on my list. I should do an adjustment video at some point.

Quite common on new trucks, but electro magnetic. This system prevents vapourlock when driving downhill
@mannys9130
@mannys9130 5 лет назад
Vaporlock? Not with fuel injection...
@OldNorsebrewery
@OldNorsebrewery 5 лет назад
Some of us live were there is high hills and mountains. When driving downhill and you apply brakes often since there is a 90 degree turn at the bottom and you really need to control speed. Since brake fluid will boil and enter the vapor state of fluids it will result in no brake since you can´t compress vapor. Then you will drive off the cliff because of no brakes. Fuel injection or not

Duece, btw do you still have the fold down benches for the back of your truck. I've slept on them on more than one occasion in the late 70's 😀. Damn uncomfortable, but keeps you out of the mud/sand.

Just dun ordered my new Blackhawk! Ergo grip from Jo Bob Outfitters. Price was $7.95 and shipping was $3.50. I plan on mounting it to my new 16" AR-15 Carbine. By coincidence last year I bought a complete AR Carbine Lower parts kit from PSA for just $69.00. It came with a Blackhawk! extendable butt stock. Should be a nice match. Of course that means i will have an extra A2 style pistol grip now. Hmmmmm? What do do......what to do? No......not gonna say only thing I can do is build an AR-15A2 around that pistol grip. I am saving up a bit each month to buy a Pieta 1858 New Army Brass Frame BP revolver. Cabela's has them normal price for $229.99.

I've got that grip on one of my lowers which was also from PSA. It's one of my nicer feeling grips and is WAY better than my sanded down A2 grip. I just ordered one of those grip screw trigger adjusters from Jo Bob to play with. No idea if it'll work but we'll see. Thanks for the post.
@Bill23799

@@deuceandguns Hey BC. I have used the grip screw trigger adjuster and it really does work if you have standard trigger with that little bit of creep in it. I would test it and see if you like it. Then put the Removable Blue Loc Tite thread locker on it and reinstall it.

I have used a number of trucks with that same style park brake. My 66 Dodge One Ton has the same one. A friends 57 GMC tandem has a disk brake for the park brake. Hey what kind of mileage do you get with your Deuce?
@deuceandguns
@deuceandguns 5 лет назад
Mileage with a deuce is complicated. It can get anything between 5-16 mpg and this is one of the future videos I want to make at some point.

I understand I work in a quarry around big dump trucks some days it's 100 gallons to fill them up others it's 150 gallons. It all depends on the load they are hauling.

What is the normal stopping distance at 30 and 55 mph or 50 mph roughly Google won't tell me thanks. I plan on getting this truck later this year. Also can you put a 2nd tank for fuel on it 😊 thanks in advance.

Dumb question, is there a high idle switch?
@deuceandguns
@deuceandguns 5 лет назад
Yes, kinda. The Deuce has a full on hand throttle that'll let you set the idle all the way to full throttle. This is intended to be part of the winch control but it's also used to keep the engine at 1,000ish rpm for warmup/idle.
