Tasha you got the message right away. She died and he wanted to do good to get to heaven to see her again. Just imagine how this would work as a country song with a sad ending.🙂
This song always hits me in the feels. Pearl Jam actually covered this song. He has to live with the pain of knowing he was driving when she got killed
I’ve always loved this song! This love transcends time! And he wants to live a good life so he can be sure to go to heaven to see her. Plus the vocals on this song are amazing!
The local oldies station played this at 11:58 like clockwork, I know that cause I was in a pos convenience store at that time on the reg in the early 00s. Tragic, concise & a heart punch all while welded to an upbeat backing. Awesome.
I can’t believe anyone is doing this song it’s my favorite of all time !😀 From 50’s & early 60’s when there was a lot of Teenage Tragedy Songs like “Teen Angel”, Tell Laura I Love Her”. Also a really good one is “Laurie” or sometimes known as “Strange Things Happen in this World.”
Tasha, We were a morbid bunch in the sixties with songs like teen angel, leader of the pack, tell Laura I love heer, etc. In fact it was so bad that somebody put out a comedy song called, I want my baby back that ya'll should hear . By the way I grew up in southwest Atlanta on Barge Rd. Love your channel and think of you as one of my heart children.
When I was about 7 my dad was in Vietnam he sent us a reel to reel recorder I had to learn this song and the Green Beret and send it back to him my seven-year-old self he told me later that every night him and the guys would listen to me seeing these two songs before they went to sleep I always remember that thank goodness he made it home safe it was a tail Gunner on a medevac helicopter. He got a 3 week early out because my baby sister was very sick. He was coming home in 3 week but we didn't think my sister would make it that long so they let him out. 2 weeks after was home his chopper crashed killing everyone on it. Ps my baby sister made it too.
This was part of a series of what were known as 'Teen Tragedy' songs. Others in that series included 'Teen Angle',--Mark Dinning, 'Running Bear'--Johnny Preston, and 'Ode to Billy Joe' by Bobby Gentry.
I was 13 years old. Breaking a bunch of spoiled 5 and 6 year old horses , just north of Breckinridge Colorado, we would go to Silverthorn and shoot pool at the pub , anyway we played this song on the jukebox every time we were in town, great memories
I used to work at Shoppers and on Senior's day they would play this. I used to tell people it was my favourite work song about a guy killing his girlfriend 🙊😅
That song was song about 2 teens a boy and a girl that where in a car crash in real life where the girl died and the boy lived the original singer wrote it in her honor😢
Yes, it’s a sad song. But many people like sad songs. This is a classic, guys! But you gave your opinions. The guy liked it. I love oldies. They had melody and innocence. They weren’t about to “slap their bitches”! There was respect, kindness and love.
"Tragedy songs" were popular at a time in the 60's. Go figure. Try "Dead Man's Curve" by Jan & Dean or "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. Both were very popular and especially "Honey".
This just in : A big haired lady passenger sings opera moments before fatal impending impact of parked sedan along a horribly maintained stretch of Certainlyheavensway and route 66 off ramp I think ...yes folks it's just sixty six. .Highway SIX SIX
Pearl Jam covered this in 1994 and took it to number 2 (I hated it) J Frank Wilson did his cover of this in 1964 and also took it to number 2 Wayne Cochran did it first in 1961 and also took it to number 2.
