Please visit www.DIY3DTech.com for more information on this and many other projects! As in this episode, we will be looking at dial indicator mount which we designed for the Creality CR-10 mega 3D Printer (if you want one click here: goo.gl/FthFpE) which uses economical dial indicators to assist you in leveling / tramming the large bed of this beast!
This is a Dial Indicator Mount for the Creality CR-10 (click here: goo.gl/FthFpE) uses economical dial indicators such as this one amzn.to/2ttaAGr for less than $15 bucks or a digital version such as this amzn.to/2ttaIWr for only $25 bucks.
Also you can use a metal 1/4-20 (~6mm) sized nut and bolt combo however I like using nylon nuts/bolts such as this amzn.to/2saaeRh just to lighten things. I have designed two Gcode files to be used running the dial across the Creality CR-10 bed and they can be found here: diy3dtech.com/creality-cr10-be...

thank you!! you're a life saver! I have a neptune 2 with a harbor freight digital dial indicator. I find that the orange indicator 2nd version (where screw is put on the top) worked best in my situation

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! I created that one in your video out of sheer frustration and had begged someone to redo it. It was just barely better than nothing and as you said there were issues with height. So glad you made a better one! My gauge has the loop on the back as removable, after watching this, I'll put mine on and print your rig! I am a subscriber but I guess I need to add myself to your notification! I just posted your video in the CR-10 Facebook page: facebook.com/groups/CrealityCR10/

Is there anyplace I can get the gcode already programmed. I have no idea how to insert it into a program or program it. Love the holder, hubby loves the idea, and that he already bought one to try to use

Hopefully quick question: I have a Wanhao I3 Plus and I have an opportunity to swap it for a lightly used CR-10 from an acquaintance. Based on your experience on both: Would you recommend the swap?

The second (gcode) allows 20 seconds per corner trim the bed where the first is more of discovery app running it up and down the bed...

Can you use a Dial Test Indicator to level and adjust the 3D printer rather than using plunger type indicator?

I ordered a CR-10 this morning. Pretty excited to put my old (3 weeks old) Anet A8 to the side. Mitutoyo does make a dial indicator for $170 with data out but I think you could hack a cheap mechanical one with a potentiometer and an arduino and make your own. I do not have the skills to do this on my own but I can't imagine it would be that hard.

Just curious... Do the steppers behave differently during a rapid traverse/position vs jogging? I would think that using the interface to manually jog across the surface would allow you to learn more about the topography of your bed, and give you all the pause for user interface you'd need. Do you happen to know what philosophy is best practices or industry standard?

Watch this video and still trying to figure how it clears the side fan air deflector. Now trying to modify the air deflector so I can use this dial mounting. Would have been easier to put a drop corner on the mounting frame but cannot modify from a gcode.

This is designed for a stock CR-10 and not sure what you mean when you write "cannot modify from a gcode" as the STL is out on thinigverse so have at modifying it :-)

There is a leveling gcode that waits for the user to push the button on the control box between moves, no timer needed.
@DIY3DTECHcom
@DIY3DTECHcom 7 лет назад
Thanks for share, however I mention this int he video as this is M226 yet not all implementations properly support it (most of my printers do not) and the reason I went this route with the timed dwell instead.

I was curious the process of making sure the meter is properly aligned to the height of the print head!
@DIY3DTECHcom

Not sure I understand the question as the alignment is immaterial as show in the video you will "zero" the gauge out. Also, check the link in the description for my first video on to use dial indicator to level your bed :-)

The chinese digital one actually do have serial interface, but do not have connector. You have to hack it (physically) to tap the connection points inside.

So how flat is the glass, I hear a lot about how bowed or warped they are
@DIY3DTECHcom
@DIY3DTECHcom 6 лет назад
It hard to find anything perfectly flat and don't use the glass (no need) just a sheet of PEI to the heated and its around ~0.15 across the surface. As the trick most people miss is over extruding the first layer as I set the first layer at 110% in the slicer and between the nature of plastic and the little extra. the first creates a [near] perfectly flat surface for the rest of the print to built upon...

printed the dial indicator bracket for my ender 5 pro, but it won't fit. The bottom of the fan on the right side of hot end has what looks like a little shroud on the bottom that protrudes down and the bracket can't fit around it. tried filing, but would go through all the material on bottom right corner so it won't worl

Did you have a plate clipped to the bed, which means you're measuring the flatness of the plate and not the flatness of the bed?
@DIY3DTECHcom
@DIY3DTECHcom 7 лет назад
My bed (or what I consider the bed) is the PEI surface, worth note too is as the PEI is heated it tend to conform to the dips in the aluminum beneath it... :-)
@johnquandt8795
@johnquandt8795 7 лет назад
Sad to hear that the PEI relaxes when heated, since I love the PEI on my MK2. The other alternatives I'm considering are the PRINTinZ plate or Buildtak Flex Plate. I'll start with the glass at first and see how it works.

Very useful, thanks ... I'm wondering if there is a way to make g-code wait for a user input (push of the knob) before transitioning to the next location, rather than a fixed pause time ? I think that would work better on your second g-code example. (I'm not that up on g-code.)
@DIY3DTECHcom
@DIY3DTECHcom 7 лет назад
You know after making this video I thought I should have talked about then said awe someone will ask :-) so you are that someone! As yes sort of, there M226 which is suppose to do a pause however I have had reliability issues with it working so went with dwell instead so if you want to try simply replace the G4 P20000 with M226 :-)
@bozoTclown666
@bozoTclown666 7 лет назад
Thank you very much I will try that ... Just got my CR-10 yesterday (after waiting 3 weeks), so it may be a little while before I try it (other mods to do as well.) ... btw. Since those of us playing with 3D printer's are living in a metric mode. .. I found a cheap ($13) metric dial indicator on Amazon (with semi-good reviews) ... Just search for "Vktech Dial Indicator Gauge 0-10mm" on the Amazon website. Have it on order, will report back.
@DIY3DTECHcom
@DIY3DTECHcom 7 лет назад
will have to do that as I hadn't seen metric versions that cheap as I too prefer metric (even living in Imperial land) so thanks for sharing!
@bozoTclown666
@bozoTclown666 7 лет назад
I just received the "Vktech Dial Indicator Gauge 0-10mm" from Amazon .. The good news is that the back mounting lug looks the same as the lug for the imperial indicator you suggested (though a plastic back end.) .. The bad news is that the "sensor probe" (the thing that rides on the bed) is about 2cm shorter than your gauge ... so may not work with your mount ... (I may modify your mount for my own use) ... It is not really that essential, since we are really looking at trends, and not absolute numerical values.. (But I may want to keep my brain in "metric land" anyway ... 8^)

I second his comment. Mine arrived very late, metal shavings all over the z-rod, they didn't bother to zip tie the print head, so that bounced around like crazy. The cable ends were not tucked away, so whatever the print head didn't scratch up, those did. And the thing reeks like it sat in an oil tank. Other than that, it's actually printing decent

Not all firmware will recognize the command, I made this a while back. Might be better now, but then it was very problem-matic...
