Anybody else watch these videos (with terrible day 2 hair) and wish that Courtney was your sister or best friend so that she could fix your hair for you? So she could tell you all the best products and what's wrong with your hair? No? Just me? 🤷♀️ Well anyway thanks Courtney, the more specific videos are very helpful to me.
I have struggled with day 2 and beyond but just picked up the lemongrass leave in that she mentioned using to refresh. Boy was she right. Best looking refresh I have had yet!
I’m going to need a cocktail video. Your favorite cocktail combinations, like layed out all pretty then application then results. I feel like this could be a 2 part video lol
I second this!!! Especially the application of curl enhancing custard as part of a cocktail, which you have mentioned in this and some other videros and as far as I am aware has never been shown in any of your videos (and I've been binging them, some of them more than once... ) I never seem to get that right and always end up overmoisturized... also great job with the hold scale! you permanently engraved that on my mind!
This! I wish you could use these products mentioned and give sample combos. Like which are one and done. Which di you di leave in and then what? How di you mix and match them.
4:21 she actually starts taking out the products, before is the intro. For all the people who watch her on their breaks and such c: Loved the video though will love it even more when I can watch the rest after work ^^
Thank you for the "hold" scale - this has really answered some of my questions about custards vs. jellys vs. gels - I too get great results from applying foam last. Also just realized that I need to change my profile pic - gotta get a curly one:)
Also, my most common past time is doing “hair research” as I call it to basically grow my wishlist of products I want to try I’ve already got the curl blueberry bliss leave in and gel in a wishlist.
Lol same here. I have quite a list going for each category, in the maddening search for the Perfect Seasonal Product Combo. Somehow seems more likely I'd find a leprechaun riding a friggin unicorn quicker...
@@amytozser8224 I agree. Most products on the market are junk. If they don't contain Sulphates or silicones, they almost ALWAYS, ALWAYS contain coconut oil and/or aloe vera. Not everyone wants coconut oil in every product, but I really cannot stand when they put aloe vera in everything. I cannot use it because it causes flash drying and extreme tangles like I've never seen before. I get so disappointed when I see it in everything. I'm searching products and reading the labels, thinking I found the perfect product for me and then I see aloe on the list and gave to start all over with another product. Sigh. Very frustrating.
@@palestar828 YES omg! The Aloe flash-dries for sure- such a disappointment, as either coconut and/or Aloe is in like everything now! My basic wash day rundown (doesn't apply to summer, as I just throw it up in a messy bun every day to work): - jessicurl gentle shampoo (Kinky Curly Come Clean for clarifying) - Kinky Curly Knot Today conditioner - a masque, if I do one. For summer with high dew points, I use the orange NYM masque bc it doesn't have any glycerin for moisture, or the TGIN curl Reconstructor masque if ineed protein (also glycerin-free!) - Curls Blueberry Bliss leave in conditioner - Hairitage Curl Cream - uncle Funky's Daughter Curl Stimulator (has Aloe I think, but doesn't bug my hair for whatever reason) - Aussie Instant Freeze gel - OGX mousse (I can't remember the actual name) - Harry's Sculpting gel (that stuff is NO joke- a dab'll do ya!!) - hover diffuse roots til 85% dry, let the rest air dry - a few drops of argan oil rubbed til warm in my hands to SOTC - floof with a pick and see if the Hair Gods are smiling at me that day
Girl, you're enabling my hair product addiction! 🤣 I'm only a month into my swavy wavy journey but finding the right product combos for me is half the battle. Thank you for being so helpful! Love your quirky sunshine personality, keep the videos coming please!
I've never commented on a video but I just want to say thank you so much for making these videos. I'm just starting my curly girl journey (though my hair isn't damaged. It changed from bone straight to wavy in the past few years). I think I have 2b/c rather fine waves and I really appreciate how you make your videos sciencey.
I know the feeling of having a different hair type (stick straight) and then going to curly, only mine did so after giving birth to my son. :D I am still thanking him, and it has been 20 years now, lol. Because I use to have to get perms to keep curls in my hair at all. Now I am struggling to figure out which products work with my hair type, because so far my poor head has been freaking out over a lot of the different ones I have tried. That's why I am also glad I have found this channel, and a few others that have mentioned a lot of the same products she has. They are now in my list to buy/try to see if they work. The #1 first to try for me is Not Your Mothers Naturals line. Have my fingers crossed because I am so tired of my scalp breaking out in a rash :(
I have 2a/ 2b hair that I haven’t mastered yet but I’ve been watching you for a couple of months and it’s helped so much so far! I just wanted to spread some love because only a few days ago I noticed that you wear a lot of Christian clothes and now it makes sense why you’re such a light!! Thank you for all your help and kindness. Praise God!
Now I know why I was getting build-up from Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Mousse, loved the results at first but hours later and second day hair was not good. Thank you for sharing all you learn!!
You were the first curly girl on RU-vid that I heard admit she never got a hard cast. Up to that point, I thought I was doing something wrong because I never got a hard cast. That day was a turning point in my journey. A hard cast wasn't needed for beautiful hair. And adding more product only weighed down my fine wavey hair. I still have good and not so good hair days, but I no longer have bad hair days. Thank you.
I’m excited for this. My hair has started showing more defined curls in the front instead of just the under layers most notably at the nape where I get perfect curls
Ooooh! I have the same problem! Do you have any tips?? Also if you have side burns, do yours also curl like mad? My sideburns and my nape of neck hair is almost ringlets!
Sarah DeAnne I don’t really have sideburns so I don’t have any know on that. Honestly I wish I had some tips but it’s still a struggle. Like I get perfect ringlets with a large sharpie tightness. Last couple of washes the baby hairs around my face have started to coil but I don’t know what has sparked the change
Today, with your hair back and your beautiful makeup, you remind me of the princess from the Neverending Story! So pretty and fresh looking! Having super baby fine 2b-3a hair, I can totally relate to my hair getting weighed down super easily! I feel like every wash day is a hair experiment! Latest best wash day was trying As I Am CoWash and leave-in products, followed by Ausie Instant Freeze. Not super curly, but had 3 days of decent non-refreshed hair! I also gave myself the grace to embrace beachy waves and not constantly chase the 3b coils! By the way, I loved your finger coiling video, I tried it yesterday and had a similar effect! Not any curlier! Its so frustrating, because I feel like my waves want to make spirals, but they lack the protein structure to keep themselves in a "curl." Boo.
Hey Courtney. I really loved your video yesterday and I didn't comment then b/c I wanted to try out something you said. First, I usually like softer hold gels. I haven't tried the Biosilk Gelee but it is on my Amazon list. Second, I usually use either mousse OR gel but not both. I love the NYM mousse. However, I don't usually use foam after my gel. I usually use my foams for refreshing which I love. So, today, on your recommendation, I used my DC Foam on top of my gel (after I plopped) and it turned out really good. I may start adding that to my routine. You are such a wealth of info. I am almost at my CGM 1 year anniversary and my hair is so much better. You are so awesome.
I’m new to the CGM and never realized until very recently that my hair was actually curly. Crazy. During covid I quit blow drying and doing all the things that I’d done for 58 years, and I found curls. Who knew? I really appreciate this video SO MUCH! Just the info I needed. There are so many products out there, and I had no idea where to start. THANK YOU!
I used to wash my hair every day. When I first started scalp training (waaaaay back in the day!) it realistically took me about 4 months to get to the point where I could wash once a week...IF I didn't layer on products. If I layered on too many products...hang it up! I have had to adjust my wash days to Wednesdays and Sundays, because in order to control the massive amount of frizz my viking hair has...I have to use more than one product. I am still trying to find all the right products, as I am allergic to sulfurs and sulfates, etc...have medium to low porosity, and am protein sensitive (YAY ME RIGHT?!?). Your videos are very informative, and between you and Manes by Mell...I am getting better at it. Also, I am still transitioning back to curly/wavy...WHURLY?...after YEARS of straightening...ADD to that menopause has reared its ugly head. KEEP MAKING VIDEOS PLEASE....cause some of us feel like lost causes LOL!
Sounds like my hair, low porosity with medium thickness which means protein can build up fast. I learned that heat makes protein work better in my hair. Maybe that will help with protein sensitivity.
I don't have actual allergies but my hair is also low porosity and is sensitive to the same things. I was so frustrated trying to find products that I can use. But I found Kinky Curly Knot Today and love it! It lacks a lot of the typical ingredients.
Courtney, I think you could be my daughter. How you describe your hair is exactly like mine, though I may be just slightly curlier (2b-3a). I never get a cast, my hair wants to eat up protein like an alligator, and I get over-moisturized so easily. This is why you're my favorite RU-vidr, it's like you're speaking straight to me. Sending love from the North Star State.
Such great info. Thank you so much! One question: Where does Uncle Funky’s Daughter’s Curly Magic fit in? It’s a curl enhancer, right? But it feels like it might give some hold. I usually apply it after leave in and before gel. Is that what you do, oh wise curly one? Thanks again!!! Such a happy, non-stressful, fun video to watch and absorb. Really needed this today! 🤗
Love this video! I've only learned in my 50s that I have very curly/wavy hair, and have been straightening all my life; so I have all kinds of special styling needs. I love how you break things down into the scale of order of application and hold. I learned so much and got some great ideas on what to try next. I love how you included that people's perceptions can be very different as far as what's on the label and actual results. Thanks for this great clarity!
I agree with including the leave in (I'm still at that point in the video!), its consistency and its effects do influence the action of the other stylers.
I think a table would be cool of which combos gave you which results... A+C = loose wavy curls... one day pretty. B + C = good definition, lasted max # of days. Don't know if that makes sense... but love the advice... bought some new things based off this video!
And a good gel is my eternal quest! I have similar curl pattern and looks like density.... which why your videos are the most helpful to me! Thanks for doing all this research and sharing what you learn!
I've been loving the Shea Moisture Make It Last gel-oil. It's part of their wash and go line but I use it after my curl cream and my hair lasts at least 4 days.
This is very helpful, Courtney! I would love to see you make a video on combining different brands on wash day and how you know which brands play well with other brands. Also, I’m curious how your wash day has changed now that you know you have low porosity hair instead of high porosity hair.
I do my hair bc it’s now time to experiment. But I haven’t touched makeup since this quarantine, besides the fact that I’ve been breaking out, I’ve just had no reason to look good or to waste the product and time to do things
Sarah villar saaaame! I’m using this time to step away from everything and start fresh by experimenting with products and techniques! And as far as makeup pssssh anyone is lucky these days if they can get me to put on pants 😂😂
This video is priceless! I watch and read a lot of videos on curly hair routines but this is the best I have ever watched. Only now I finally understand what products are meant to do what and how they could be combined. You break down the info so well. You really know your hair products!
Super helpful! My routine right now is a leave in and a light hold gel. I need to take notes on your curl clump videos because I think that's what im struggling with the most Today though will be a big change, Im cutting off about 3 inches of hair(which is a lot for me! Ive been getting trims for a year and a half). Thank goodness my hair dresser is doing house calls. Im very in need of this cut
I had my best curl day EVER in my whole life today and I really want to thank you because I have been power watching your videos and I've learned so much! I started my CG journey years ago but it was awful. My hair looked terrible, felt terrible and after a few months I gave up. I recently found out my hair is sensitive to coconut and it's why my CG journey was such an awful experience. I have been back on the CG wagon for about a week now and I'm so excited for this time around. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos 💜 I wish I could share a pic but you'll have to take my word for it.
Hi Courtney. I’m turning 60 next month and live in a very humid city, Miami. I work on a yacht and am mostly on the water than on land. I no longer will subject my hair to Brazilian keratin treatments to do away with frizz. My hair is wavy, not curly. I’ve decided to go curly. My journey starts here, with your suggestions. I have spent this entire rainy day watching your videos. I appreciate all the information you have shared.
The Curlsmith shower styler is a suuuuper extreme hold gel. I slept in the cast and was scrunching for 3 days and I still couldn't get the crunch out of my hair 🙈
I have the Curlsmith in-shower styling gel (and many of their other products- LOVE Curlsmith), and I have fine 2c/3a hair, and I haven’t had any issues scrunching it out. Maybe it was a bad bottle? Or could depend on hair type?
I too took notes and can't wait to try some new products. I use foam after gel. It's a game changer! What do you do when you purchase something that isn't right for you? I hate to throw them away. It's too bad we can't have a swap in our community.
I tried the gel and cream and it doesn't really hold my waves either. It looks great right after I get the cast out but after a few hours my waves just fall apart. Might have to try the mousse at some point.
Samantha Cromer That mousse gave me a SERIOUSLY crunchy cast. I’m not used to crunchy casts, so I kinda freaked out. I’m wondering if I used too much. I’m gonna try it again though, using less.
Same. I think the packaging lists the hold as 3 for the gel & 2 for the mousse. I get more curl & volume with the mousse if I don't use too much or on soaking wet hair.(damp hair is fine) Like Courtney I find mousses/foams work best as a last step over a gel or cream since they can be drying.
I love your humor! You pick me up when I'm down, while getting curly hair lesson's. Your so funny! Do I hear someone saying Mommy in the background or am I delusional lol :)
I can’t not explain how much you have helped me. Our hair seems to be very similar, from the curl pattern to the oils. I’m a special needs preschool teacher, watching RU-vid videos and came upon your channel! I sadly won’t be back in the classroom until August so I have started my CG journey. I have been watching your videos and I am so thankful for you. I will also follow your IG. 🥰
completely agree with the poliquats buildup. I have searched for foams without poliquats for years, never ever looked at gels, until I discovered the CGM, and now I'm exploring all sorts of combos, but still haven't found one that I really like. I also don't have as many products as you do, since I'm still a beginnner.
The ECO gel green gave me a crazy strong hold, but it built up on my hair so badly. I was bummed because the ingredients are good and it's so inexpensive. Lots of people love it, but I had to have my stylist use that Buildup Buster on me after using the ECO gel for a few weeks. The Orange Marmalade gel (from Ecoslay) gives me a crazy strong cast, but I have a hard time getting day 2 hair with that one. Also it flash dries on me.
I'm rewatching this because I'm looking to switch up my routine and just enjoy you so much 💕 your personality makes me smile 🥰 hope you and your family are doing well and staying safe!
Wonderful, informative video! Thank you! My question is where does Uncle Funky's Daughter's Curl Magic Curl Stimulator fall within your hold scale? Is this really a gel or does the "curl stimulator" have something extra in it to make curls twist up more?
This is SO helpful! I'm 2 months in to a modified cgm and am a walking sponge, always looking for information! Your videos are so fun to "soak up." :D Thank you!!!
Thank you. Thank you. This was just wonderful! I'm a wavy like you and agree or have experienced everything you are saying about the products! Won't ever be without my Mop Top Custard or my Ecoslay Oeange Marmalade. Very interesting about the foams!
Thank you for sharing your honest opinions! I love the wide array of products, price points, and holds! This is extremely helpful. You’re a life saver.
Could you do a video on the AG recoil curl activator? It looks like something i've been looking for but i would love to see a more in depth review before i go spend the $22
I love the Rock Hard Gelee. I actually just emulsify it in a good amount of water between my hands before applying to hair. I've found that to work the best for me.
That was a great video! Thank you Courtney! I'm new to this and I have a lot of moisturizers and treatments but one shampoo and NO Gels. I was wondering why my curls didn't last! hahaha big learning curve
This video was so educational and helpful!! I’ve been following the curly girl method for a few months now and I’ve really been struggling with finding products that work well for me. Thank you Courtney!
I have only been doing the curly girl method for about a year, so I have not tired many products yet. But I still like my LA Looks Extreme Sport gel, it says it has a hold of "10" on the bottle and it's blue in color, but alcohol free and curly girl approved. It used to be talked about a lot on youtube, but now I don't hear much if anything about it any more. I guess just because there are so many other prodcuts out there. I found mine at the the Dollar Tree, but have seen it at Wal-Mart for around $2. Great gel for cheap! I also been loving my Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Mousse. Also inexpensive and I can find it at Wal-Mart or Target. Thanks for this video too Courtney! It helped me understand the different products better!
I am loving the Hairitage Ahead of The Curl cream. It's really lightweight and doesn't weigh my hair down and gives me great enhancement. I have on hand LA Looks blue gel and the Curl one, and while they do create quite a cast on me I am noticing some flash drying. I'm seeing some who love the Aussie Instant Freeze and might try that next. Budget friendly drug store are my favorite words, lol...thanks for this video! I had the right product application order, but this has proven that I am, in fact, doing it right!
This was so helpful! I love having my hair in different textures and stuff. I was wondering if you would do a battle of the custards? The reason being is both of those you used have ingredients that I am allergic to and I would love to see the comparative results.
I have coarse, low porosity hair that seems to be protein sensitive. I have found that most gels cause a lot of build up and cause flash drying and other issues for me. Plus, it takes my hair forever to dry! I'm considering buying a hair dryer and try gels again, but for now I just use custard. I use the Kinky Curly for winter. Also, unlike gel, I can use it on dripping hair, which really helps me with definition and clumping.
Thank you so much for this! Most of this I knew but I really appreciate the reminder and explanation of what certain products’ hold factor is like. Also thanks for explaining how you use foams and mousse. I used to use a foam as my only hold product but since being CG I just can’t get them to work for me!
I use the bumble and bumble invisible oil and then follow with the AG Firm Mousse Gel. No need to use a gel and I get the cast. It also contains protein. I heard about this product from Mel and though I have so many products the AG mousse gel is my go-to.
You’re kinda right! I do think that leve-in it is a styler ‘cause when I want lose waves but still nicely controlled, I only use a leve-in as a styler!
Loved the video and the description of each category and product. Do you find yourself using same/different products now that you had your hair analyzed? If so how?
This is late and so you’ll probably never read it ... But ... Try using the mousses over your soft hold jellies for super humid summer days, and save the products with heavy glycerin gels for dry weather/climates. I get better results every time with the mousses this way, because they don’t seem to “melt” in the wet heat. It seems to create big, lasting curls without frizz when dew point is high, and refreshes with a little wet hands on days 2 and 3 for any frizz flyaways. I just call it my summer hold now (live in FL ... so I fight the humidity!). Thanks and LOVE your channel (my sister-in-law is your doppelgänger ... even has your voice and mannerisms - Lol!).
So I finally tried the MopTop Custard and it is one of my FAVORITE scents! In Japan it is a common car air freshener. The scent in Japan is known as "Squash"! I started this curly girl routine when we went into quarantine mid-march. I have learned so much from your videos! Thank you so much!!! I even got a hair analysis done after watching you!
Great video, as always! I love how you really break everything down, it is so helpful! I really enjoy all your one brand washdays, but I'd love to see a video about what sort of combination of products works best for you when you are just doing your regular styling. What products do you reach for (and in what order and how you apply) when you are just styling for yourself and want something that you know will give you good results? Thank you!
Thank you for your videos and All the information! I just recently started doing partial curly girl. I’m not super strict about it, my hair is more wavy. I’m learning so much and with the info I’ve learned from your videos I’ve had better hair days with the curly hair!
I have been investigating to figure out WHY my hair hated the curl talk gel so much, and you just helped me! I figured it was the particular type of glycerin (the really long one) because I'm in Houston where humidity is always 500%
I love your videos!! You have literally educated me so much. Seeing you pop up in my notifications makes me so excited, you just brighten my day :) thank youu
I COMPLETELY relate to LOVING to try out new products. I have a very small budget for products but still get very excited about the few I do get. Sometimes I find myself washing too often just because I love washing my hair so much! 😬😂
I am working my way through your videos and IG posts, learning all I can in other forums as well. One thing I CANNOT find is a weekly or monthly calendar that is a guideline for when to wash with what (cowash or clarifying), a suggestion of order of products for wash days and refresh days. Does something like this exist?! I know everyone has different hair and will like and respond to different products, but I do love me a list and calendar to follow! Thank you for all of this information, you have the MOST amazing hair!
I looove the ag re coil! I never get a cast with it, but my curls are more defined and less frizzy then when i use a gel. I usually use a leave in then a cream then the re coil. I will have to try it as a one and done though! Hopefully i will be able to achieve more volume I always feel like i learn and get product recommendations from your videos! It is also nice to find someone that has more of a wavy texture. A lot of youtubers videos i find they have more curly hair (which is beautiful) but i have more 2b, 2c waves. So its great to find videos with someone with more waves 😊
Camille Braids get really easy and quick if you just practice enough. Your arms do get really sore though lol. It’s so much easier to learn if you have someone willing to let you experiment on their head.
Live in Seattle and rarely go wavy in the winter because my hair just never dries. I’m mostly 2A maybe a smidge of 2B if I coax it out. If I blow dry upside down I’ll go straight with a very pronounced curl under without trying. If I air dry without product it’s frizzy from the ears down and bends a few times. Just looked at my two wavy stylers (Devacurl foam and spray gel) and they both have glycerin and protein in them and well Seattle in the winter is 100% humidity with average dew point... of course my hair doesn’t dry! Works great in the summer where we have low dew points the warmer it gets. Fell down this rabbit hole looking for Devacurl alternatives and wanting to avoid blow drying while staying home now that the weather is finally above 60 degrees. Guessing I also have protein loving hair because moisture leaves me stringy and greasy and super yuk.
Courtney I love your videos and you have helped me learn so much about my hair! Flash drying!! You came out with that video when I was experiencing it!! It was uncanny but very very helpful.
I hadn't thought of using either a leave-in or cream, not both! I notice when I use a cream my hair looks greasy and weighed down even when it's dry. I'll have to try using just one!
