Seeing someone reinventing uses for tools that already exists to the hands of so many others always blows my mind. That's what you call "thinking outside the box". But yet again: Those ideas would be almost worthless unless they are shared. So thank you guys and all the other people out there on youtube that share brilliant ideas like this one. THX!

This is an amazing tutorial, the explanations were precise and easy to follow. I have HitFilm Pro 2017 and I love it! I am experimenting with After Effects also and in the spring I will be doing a comparison video on both softwares. I am happy with how HitFilm is more user friendly, and all of the tutorials that are out there for the application. The support is there for HitFilm also, thank you to the people who respond to my inquiries, I really appreciate it.

I had seen effects like this on documentaries showing historical images or paintings with a bit of 3D depth to them and wondered how it could be done. Seems it's mostly about making a good depth layer. Great tutorial.

JJtoob what always tickles me about this technique is how rough and ugly the Displacement Map can be! :-)
@JJtoob

triem23 I think it's just because it may have been taken a bit too far from what would be subtle. I also wouldn't feather everything, since some objects are not nearly in the same plane.
@triem23

Possibly true. In my own experiments I've had better luck feathering everything, however. A really hard edge is easy to "tear."

You guys should do a video for each fx pack hitfilm 4 express has to offer, for example, you can do a video explaining the destruction pack, basically giving a rundown of all the features. I know you've done videos on some of the fx in depth, but I think it would be cool to have an overview for each add on

after spending about 8 hours trying everything in the book to edit 4k on hitfilm. I came to the conclusion that it's impossible. how ever I'm still on team hitfilm. I'm probably going to end up sticking with hitfilm to edit important scenes at only 1080p. and using cyber link to do my real editing in 4k. I like the underdog so much I'll work around all the bugs lol

Hey HitFilm. I've been having some trouble with Express lately. Now, I'm not sure if this is a problem with HitFilm, but when I was exporting it to RU-vid, after it was exported there was a joke where I put shaycarl's face over my face, but when it exported the face was just a red box saying "Media Offline". If this is a problem with HitFilm 4 Express if you could please look into it that would be amazing. Keep up the good work and have a nice day.
@FXhome
@FXhome 7 лет назад
It sounds like HitFilm was unable to find where you had stored the image of shaycarl's face on your computer. You would need to manually relink up the media so that the software could find it. If you'd like some more help, please contact our support team: hitfilm.com/questions/submit

Hello I'm curious what if I want to green-screen the image [I cut out my image placed onto green background] I want to move the background with a different image.
@HitfilmUniversity
@HitfilmUniversity 2 года назад
You'd be adding extra steps. Once you've cut an image out of a background, you can save it with a transparent background from your photo editor or Hitfilm in the PNG format. Just make sure you set output channels to either "32-bit" or "RGBA," (depending on the software). After that, you can use any other background image you want. It would be up to you if you wanted to create a different depth matte for the FG and BG layers, or create a single depth matte for the composite image. You could also combine displacement mapping with "2.5D" or "Parallax" animation. This is just placing 2D layers in 3D space so that there's some revealed depth from camera movements. If you've already cut a foreground element out, there's no reason you can't combine both techniques.

Hello, can you tell me what shades of grey you are using I'm lost! Are these different picture layers or the same one?
@HitfilmUniversity
@HitfilmUniversity 2 года назад
Hi - I'm the guy who did the tutorial. So, for shades of gray, the important thing is remembering that 50% gray - 128, 128, 128 RGB values - is NO Displacement, while black (0,0,0) is full NEGATIVE displacement and white (255,255,255) is full POSITIVE Displacement. If I set Displacement to 25px Horizontal and -25px Vertical, then the 50% gray displaces 0,0. Black pixels Displace -25 horizontal and +25 vertical (the reverse of the set distance) and white displaces +25 horizontal, -25 vertical (the entire set distance). Other grays Displace by smaller amounts. I started with a 50% gray layer. After that, there's different ways to do it. In a paint program I'll use a pure white or pure black brush at something like 10% opacity so i can build up dark and light areas. In a paint program I'll usually just do this on a single layer. Building in Hitfilm, using masked plane layers means I have to have a separate plane layer for each shade, but I'll still use a pure white/black plane and comp it at low opacity.

I'm still a bit confused how the displacement effect works. As you move the slider to the right (the horizontal one) white portions move to the right and black ones vice versa? Is there a spot I I can learn more aboutthis
@HitfilmUniversity
@HitfilmUniversity 7 лет назад
ReadyyFireAim You've pretty much figured it out. Displacement uses the greyscale map to determine how much Displacement is used relative to the value set on the slider. Positive X (horizontal) values move to the right, positive Y (vertical) values move up. For now, let's pretend we have a value of 100 on both sliders. Black values in the map will displace pixels 100 left and 100 down. White values will displace pixels 100 right and 100 up. 50% grey values do NO Displacement. Therefore 75% grey will move pixels 50 right and up, while 25% grey will move pixels 50 left and down. Make sense, I hope? Check out the Glitch Transition tutorial on this channel for another use of Displacement.

How is there not a filter yet in photo editing tools for making such a map?
@triem23
@triem23 7 лет назад
LarsFL Gaming the issue with an "automatic filter," is a computer doesn't automatically know the depth of things in the image. It shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes to create a depth map. The "all Hitfilm" version was the very first time I tried it, and it took about 15 minutes to do. I had a couple of start/stops and a complete redo in there. Once you do it once and fix the idea in your head, it goes very quickly.

@AMVayanefan
@AMVayanefan 7 лет назад
Cool, thank you for the reply and info. :)
@triem23
@triem23 7 лет назад
AMVayanefan it took about 10 minutes to set up the version with the Photoshop map and about 15 to do the all-Hitfilm version. I'd never built a Displacement Map directly in Hitfilm before this tutorial--I didn't even do a practice run--so, in the future it could be done faster. Advantages of Displacement. Since the filter is warping the image, it's better for a look with more rotation. Particularly in the TIE pilot shot, that "twisting" look wouldn't work with the 2.5D parallax technique. The subtle shifting of Felicity's body can't be done in 2.5D parallax. On the other hand, with Displacement you can't really do something where the camera moves closer to or farther away from the focal object. So the 2.5D parallax method from the other tutorial is better for cameras dollying in or out, or if you wanted to add camera depth of field, or add other elements like fire and fog in 3D space. Which method is "better" will depend on the desired look of the final shot. Remember, you can combine both techniques! Since the 2.5D parallax method is slicing up parts of images with the masking tool, one could (for example) cut Felicity out to her own Composite Shot, do a Displacement Map on her, but drop that on top of a copy of the background set back in 3D space! FYI, besides the 2.5D parallax method and Displacement Mapping method, in Hitfilm Express there are at least two more ways to add 3D depth to 2D pictures. With Pro, or proper Add-ons in Express there are at least another two MORE methods of adding 3D depth to 2D images. All have different looks and different advantages. :-)
@AMVayanefan
@AMVayanefan 7 лет назад
That is awesome info, thank you very much. I will try both methods out eventually and I really appreciate all the information. Thank you again. :-)

I like hitfilm a lot. but it lags so much editing 4k video that It renders hitfilm useless. cheaper programs like adobe elements and power editor handle 4k so well. I'm surprised hitfilm express cant handle it at all. I wonder if it's just the express version that can't handle the 4k. still recommend hitfilm over adobe if you edit in 1080p. but for 4k editing your better off buying the cheaper editing programs or if you can afford it paying for the adobe premier pro.

Jayzn tried every combination possible with cpu gpu and every low setting inside of hitfilm Pro. it's just not optimized for 4k. that's something they can fix. they're a small company so either they don't care as much for 4k or they just need more time to update the software.

MAD MIKE (REEL CHAOS) I didn't include project files with the tutorial. Since the media I used would be under copyright, it seemed safer not to. The First Order pilot can be found with a simple Google search, and the Depth Map... Well, getting the effect to work is all about building the Depth Map, so I'd say go ahead and build your own. That's the step that will let you use this technique with your own media. As the screen caps show, the Depth Map can be really rough and sloppy. :-)

Much better technique is to paint only white and do it layer by layer, each layer set to 10% using plus/add blending. And I had a lot of fun doing these, vimeo.com/172420330 and vimeo.com/173289405 though both were setup in Nuke and used 3D displacement, not 2D, and also did the maps in Nuke, easier in these cases, especially trump where I also animated the displacement maps for some crappy expressions... :)
@triem23
@triem23 7 лет назад
Johnny Farmfield I'd actually agree with you there. I figured it was a quicker explanation to just go with lighter greys. Once a user grasps the concept of how the filter works, and how it interacts with the control map, one is free to use whatever techniques desired to create the map. But you are absolutely correct, layering up the map with a white brush at low opacity would give better control.
@triem23
@triem23 7 лет назад
Johnny Farmfield btw, Great displacement examples. The Canadian White Walker is just funny, ok, buddy-guy? The Trump had really fantastic motion. Scary!
@Farmfield
@Farmfield 7 лет назад
triem23 - I also started out doing depth maps with different grays but I thought of this method and it made it way easier to tweak, as you can adjust the layers changing the opacity. You can also add a layer using black and mulriply/darken as blending mode to pull back an area that perhaps started to get too light. It's really controllable.
@triem23
@triem23 7 лет назад
Totally! Or even use a dodge/burn tool. A neat thing about digital art is there are usually three to five different ways of going about any particular task.
@Farmfield
@Farmfield 7 лет назад
triem23 - But it's of course way easier to create these maps if you can get a real time feedback in 3D. Here's a viewport look at the Alarmist setup... vimeo.com/174932427
