Love the cinderblock stand! I made a large one in the back of my basement for angel breeding after seeing Cory's video on Aquarium-coop, but that looks like a nice rustic setup in any room, especially with the plants.
Thanks! Yeah these stands are so great especially since they’re so easy to setup. I actually built some panels to hide the blocks 😀😀How to Hide a Cinder Block Aquarium Stand😀😀 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S9w3Z0QTkz0.html
@@plantlifeproject im very lucky! ive got a bunch of cups all filled with lots of random cuttings! and been exploring around alot for more plants. also we have lots of wild aquarium fish too. wild guppies, sword tails, mollies, mountain shrimp, cichlids, plecos, trumpet snails, mystery snails, everything! would be very easy to set up a 100% wild tank.
i have a 40 gallon breeder tank with a 4 spot under gravel filter covered in 3 inch deep black gravel . 4 maxi-jet 900 power heads . i have 3/8 thick plexyglass covering the tank with 4 six inch net pots cut in to it . in each pot i put 1/2inch bio balls as a test i grew biy boy tomatoes . i found that putting tank dividers for each plant it works better . i use rain water mixed with cns17 grow nutrients at 10 mil per gallon . i use a FAMURS TF4000 LED Grow Light set at 18 hours on 6 hours off . i have cancer and the meds were killing me so i grow C99 x Blueberry FAST Feminised Seeds from seedsman seeds . now ive done the 5 gallon bucket dwc hydroponic grows but this set-up just blows that out of the water !!
My old tank had rotting wood fence posts from big bear lake. I brought rock, mud, and wood and water to inoculate my tank. There were worms in the gravel and snails and all that stuff
Love this. I grow a lot of house plants in my aquarium. I have a philodendro monstera it is huge, pothos,a Swiss cheese and more that I didn't think would do good but are doing great.
I love your set up! Your plants are lush and beautiful. I really like the umbrella sledge. ( I believe it’s called. It’s the taller one in the back that looks like an umbrella..♥️
Great setup. I'd love to see something like a Ficus with its roots in the water with fish and shrimp. Regarding your guppies' exponential growth, have you ever considered adding a couple predator fish? Maybe you could conduct an experiment like the wolves and moose on Isle Royale!
Houseplants in fish tank Part 2 describes what happened next, you’re spot on about adding predator fish for population control! What species of ficus were you thinking?
@@plantlifeproject One of my fav Ficus is thonningii in part because the new root tips are pink. Ficus Audrey would also be a good one to try. It just seems like there must be a good way to combine bonsais (more or less) and aquariums! But I guess then it would be a paludarium of some sort...
Have you experimented with Maidenhair fern? I did but failed, that said, I got a pot of half dead maidenhair fern from Lowes at deeply discounted price. Cleaned the roots of soil, and submerged the 3/2 of the roots in aquarium, 1/3 above water. The plant died a slow death .... Love to have your take on this plant, or other ferns.
I absolutely love the system you have. Looks really nice and clean. I’m currently planning to redo our system. So are your planters sitting on top of the PVC pipe? And are your planters just regular window box planters?
I was doing water changes about once a month when this video was made. Now I don’t really do water changes regularly, because the plants have grown so much, they keep the water clean for the most part.
Thanks! There is one plastic window planter box approximately 24” long. It is held up by a shelf that I made from a 6” diameter pvc pipe cut in half lengthwise with 2 legs also made from 6” pvc pipe. At some point, I’m going to redo the substrate in the tank, that will be a good chance to show and explain the shelf in more detail!
Would you say this number of plants is necessary to consume the excess nitrates in the aquarium? Or is it possible fewer plants would also do the job? Thanks!
You can grow only a few plants but it really depends on how many fish are in the tank. Check out this video link, hope it helps! 🍃How Many HOUSEPLANTS does it take to REDUCE NITRATES 🍃in a Fish Tank? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9_06Dd1HGws.html
I have not tried growing these vegetables plants in this setup…..not yet, I’m sure I’ll try it at some point. I have grown Malabar Spinach this way, it needs more light than I could give it.
@@plantlifeproject thank you for the info. I have full grown Oscars in my tank, exposing the root system in the water is not an option. What I'm trying to do is to empty the media chambers of a HOB filter, and put plants in the chamber, then put in a bunch of biomax ceramic rings to hold the plants in place. I just did that with lucky bamboo a week ago, it seems fine so far. Just bought peace lily to try the same. I wonder what are your thoughts on my setup? Will the water flow have any negative effects on the growth of the root system?
@@mlywowo growing plants in the HOB filter will work. However I usually don’t do this because there’s not much space for the roots to grow long term, especially with multiple plants. @@plantlifeproject thank you for replying i like your videos and all your tanks 👍👍👍👍 and i have also used umbrella sedge in my tank in my recent setup.
Where did you find that "bog filter" pot, thing? I've called all around and looked on Amazon... Can't find it. I need a way to hold my plants on the top! Please answer!!

For bridenhair fern I am not sure if I spelled it right because I can’t put it straight in to the water but they like to be moist so I was thinking to rap around the root with sphagnum moss and stick it in a drift wood and leaving it close to the fish water but not into the water 😊🤷♀️.thank you for replying 🙏
I would love to add plants to my aquarium but the black Lids completely cover and I do have an African dwarf frog that will jump and I don't want to lose him where can you buy those boxes hang on the back or inside of the tank? When I set up my 10 gallon tank I use topsoil I had rinsed well I put a 2in section of topsoil in the middle then I used my Bonsai soil to line it in tightly my next step was swimming pool sand everything was rinsed several times then I covered it in the sand and topped it off with some small River Rock stones I have ended up with about three to three-and-a-half in substrate the aquatic plants my husband bought me are not doing great I have a fertilizer for them but they don't have many roots yet I hope they will find their way into that dirt but peace lilies pothos any other thing that I could put along the back I would be thrilled due to my health I am not allowed to bend from the waist over I have an aneurysm and high blood pressure so if I could get plans to grow with my aquarium that would be a bonus for me thank you for your video
