Yep, you can add E-Commerce functionality later. The most common one for WordPress is called "Woocommerce", although I think the most popular E-Commerce platform overall is Shopify. Many people will use WordPress for their main site and blog, and Shopify for their store. So if you install WordPress on www.example.com, you could later start a Shopify store and within the Shopify settings, point your shop to shop.example.com. But like I mentioned, if you want everything integrated into WordPress, Woocommerce is a great option.
