Creating a Jewelry Campaign Image with the Westcott Optical Spot

I’m often asked to photograph jewelry on my beautiful subjects, sometimes it’s traditional, sometimes it’s moody and luxurious. There’s no one “right” way to do this, but I always like to put my spin on whatever I photograph, so today I wanted I'll be using my new modifier the Westcott Optical Spot to add a bit more drama and focus (no pun intended!) on the subject.
If you’re not familiar with an optical spot, it's a lighting modifier that is unlike many others. It allows you to create "slices" of light, project patterns with gobo inserts and focus the light with extreme precision. It's now one of my go-to modifiers! 😆
While the optical spot did it’s job here to focus a sliver of light on the earring and jewelry, my model is barely visible, so that’s why I chose to add a second light which is a medium umbrella with diffusion to create a soft fill.
Now my work wouldn’t be complete without adding some color! I opted to add a blue/cyan gel to the umbrella’s strobe to introduce a little more drama to the scene. It’s the combo of these 2 lights that lets me achieve the mood that I want, the color and direct the viewer’s eye to the important part of the frame.
Finally just a little trial and error to position the light where I wanted it and viola! The versatility of the Optical Spot is what what I love most, it really let me fine tune exactly what I wanted to get out of this image.

This was very helpful to see ways to draw attention to parts of an image (even if not a portrait...). The quality and placement of light certainly made a difference. The blue gel alone made the pretty model's lovely makeup look greasy. But with the uncolored, controlled spot not only did the jewelry stand out but the model looked fresh and "natural" (clearly made up, but clean). Thx for the video.

Lindsay great video , But how would you do this golden hour sunset if you ddn't have the Optical spot as this would be another expense to boot.
@lindsayadlerphoto
@lindsayadlerphoto 2 года назад
I think you meant to comment on the sunset video? You don't NEED an optical spot to emulate sunlight, but with the gobo you can fake it coming through slats etc. There are other ways to do that, with a hard light, snoot etc. Optical spot just makes it infinitely easier.

It depends on the color of blue an dhow bright you want that blue to be, but 2-2.5 stops under for the blue is about right.

Hey Lindsay, I bought your Optical Spot form Wescott and I think I heard you say this was just \atypical Canon EF style light. I need something a little stronger than the 150. Would a EF 75-300 zoom work?

I want to project a smaller pattern (or possibly a larger pattern). I guess I want to know if an ordinary EF Canon lens will go on the spot.

@lindsayadlerphoto
@lindsayadlerphoto 2 года назад
@@muehlemannfilms Sure, first we made it interchangeable mounts for canon, Profoto, Bowens, Balcar, elinchrom, etc. Next, I selected a lens with no chromatic aberration that was sharp and focused (great for tiny slices of light), and I changed the thickness as well as sharpness of the leaves so that they would give sharper edges to the light but ALSO not too sharp physical (aka some versions were so thin that literally cut me!)
