I would love to see a tutorial video of you completing the cutting and layering process! I was wanting to do a Mickey Mouse HTV in color but not sure how the layering would work on shirts based upon what you’ve noted in comments below and prior. Any additional tutorials would be so great! Your communication and teaching style is obviously appreciated! You did a great job with this video! Not too fast and not too slow!
Thank you one person on RU-vid confused the daylight out of me you came and went straight to the point that made it easy and learnable as a newbie it not easy learning how to use the silhouette most of all you don't find enough information for silhouette we need more videos on the silhouette

Thank you soo much for explaining this. I had no idea I could do this (not much instruction in the manual to make things clear..) and when you are new to this.. I tell you, I did it the long way with taking apart (my near new image of dif colours- and many colours/ pieces.. I separated the pieces.. and well.. it ended up being a mess of pieces of coloured vinyl. Well, a mess of stacked coloured vinyl that I had no idea which piece went were (it was very complex and tiny pieces cut out) After leaving it for about 4 months except to cut a couple of big pieces - 1 colour a few times.. I haven’t used it much -believing that there surely must be a far better and easier way then what I experienced, and still wanting to do this.. just did not know how.. thank you!! You have saved me alot of grief as I was going to tempt the complex design again..and of course- do it the way I did it the first time- until I just found your video!! (patience I have alot of.. it’s ‘I know there must be a better way- keep trying, I will get this eventually. I am excited and 1/2 way watching your video, I just had to go to my comp and turn on everything!! Guess what I am going to try after I finish this comment 😉😀😀😀 thanks!! And as well, subscribing!!

I honestly haven't used my cameo in a while, but I had no idea you could cut by color!! that is a game changer!!!!! I am making 30 tumblers for a family event and this is so wonderful. THANK YOU SO MUCH ! your video made it super easy for me to understand & i really appreciate it ! i just have your video running in the bk ground , pause it every few seconds & followed step by step , switching bk & forth from my design , only issue im having is for some reason , when i release the path , & try to delete the black line around my entire image , even though they are all boxed off , its deleting the entire thing ? any ideas as to why ? I did take 3 different images & layered them to look like one , but i didnt think that was affecting it ?thanks again !
You do not have to have the designer addition to trace...i trace all the time and i dont have it....however, how to you get the ruler in your design area...i have been trying to figure that out forever...
Select the tool from the top tool bar called "Grid" (it looks like a blue grid). At the bottom of that tool page there is the "Ruler", just make sure it is selected.
I love this tutorial. Thank you for the time you spend teaching! I have a Silhouette Cameo still in the Basic Addition. What do I need to upgrade to in order to have the ability to cut by color in the cut settings? I don't see that in advanced on mine.
That was a great video! But how do you do all the settings in basic? What Tool do you choose if you are using the auto blade? And what is a ratchet blade, what can it do? Your video gave me enough confidence to feel I can actually MAKE something!
Yahoo!! Do it! I don't know what setting to tell you for your auto blade, as I am still working with an older model of silhouette. Just use whatever settings have worked for your standard vinyl. I did put up a video on how to test blade settings. I recommend you run your own tests that way you can override their default setting if needed. Good luck!!
Do u have a tutorial of you actually cutting the layers for one of these type designs? I'm brand new to this and I am a little confused on how u put it all back together
This is great! One question though, do you find that this uses up more vinyl this way? Like is it wasted space? It might be worth it though to have everything already lined up.
Actually, when it comes to cutting the vinyl, I have found that this method allows me to use a minimum amount of vinyl. I cut each color separately from the minimum square of vinyl.
Actually, you will need to go to the click on the "fill" tab at the top of the SEND screen. That will show you the different color elements and you can select each color fill to cut by. Silhouette updates periodically change the look and feel of the software. Good Luck!
Love your video but was wondering how you make your copies to put off to the side. I hear you say command C and V but i'm new to all this and not sure how its done. thanks
It is a computer short cut and varies between PC and Mac. "Command C" is the Mac short cut for "copy" and "Command V" is the short cut for paste. On PC, I think , it is "Control C" and "Control V".
Great video! I found the image you used and followed right along. I then tried it on a San Francisco Giants baseball logo.....fail! I just can't get the layers separated correctly. Thank you so much!
So, with this are you like cutting the blue dots in the position where they will fit? Or are you cutting the dots in a tinny area then pealing them and placing them where they go? The reason I ask is if you leave each piece where it would fit you would waste a lot of vinyl in doing so. I'm not looking to do this kind of art work, I'm looking to make stick on templates to pain with. I can't seem to get mine to cut right even when using just a black and white outline of the image. img.etsystatic.com/il/130fe5/1181926567/il_340x270.1181926567_15pz.jpg?version=0 This is the kind of thing I tried and it was a mess, it didn't cut in some areas and did in others. I think cause the lines weren't solid and it couldn't figure out a defined path? I don't know but maybe you can tell me if this kind can be done? If so maybe make a video for those of us who are clueless on how to do any of this. Making a stencil with more intricate pictures. Thanks
The dots are simply the softwares points of reference and they connect the dots to make a cut line. If there is a "gap" between two dots, meaning there was no intentional connection made between the two dots, then yes, the cutting machine will jump between the two points. The software will show you where there is a "gap" between two dots by turning the two dots RED between which there is no intentional line. You will need to "connect" the two red dots, telling the software that you want a line completed between the two dots. That's hard to describe, but hope it helps a bit.
@@MarohnDesigns Yeah, that was way over my head. lol It's alright. I just need to find pictures that have better defined edges. The best ones are cartoons and that's not what im going for. I was hoping to find like a simple drawing like of a male warrior angel, just the outline with a few areas of accent, and horses from the front running full speed, things like that. hi, the black first layer is just the border line that I will transfer or will be the whole body in black and then on top put the other colors? do u know what I mean? btw thank you for your videos
It can be either way. However, if it is a whole body black background you need to be more precise in the form on the color components. I find that when I make the black outline the layer that goes on the top of it all, it can cover up some of the color components that are not so precise.

Not necessarily, because when I put the pieces of vinyl down on my cutting mat I make sure they are set up in the exact spot where I will be cutting. I am not putting down whole sheets of vinyl, just small cuts that match the dimensions that I need.
I don't, personally. I felt like I was stressing more about lining up the registration boxes than the image. It is a method that many people find useful.
I found that I was spending as much time trying to line up registration boxes as I was the actual image. I found that just eye-balling it worked for me.
That is much more challenging that vinyl. You can layer it, but once you start to build up the layers with HTV, the bonding processes weakens. If I was doing this in HTV, I would do some "knock-outs" so that there weren't so many layers sitting on top of each other. Using regular vinyl (i.e. 651 Oracal) means you can build several layers.
Anna Lee I use the grid marks you see in the design space. The correspond to the grid marks on the cutting mat. For example, if the purple monster covers 3"x3" on the screen where I am designing then I know to cut a piece that is about 4"x4" and put it in the same spot as it is on the screen.
Yes, if you are putting a design on a shirt you would need to mirror the image. However, there would also be several other things I would do differently if I was preparing this image for application to fabric, such as reduce the layers.
